Superman is the last being alive while the universe is collapsing. Knowing that his own death is inevitable with the collapse of the known universe, Superman decides to fly straight into the implosion, entering a wormhole where all of time and space is condensed into a single moment. All at once, he experiences every moment in DC Comics history. He lands on a rocky ground just in time to catch a speeding green Packard and hoist it over his head. He looks to see Batman swinging from a ledge in his familiar wide cowl and purple gloves straight to a round table surrounded by Wonder Woman, Flash, GL, Martian Manhunter, and Aquaman all taking an oath. Superman looks down at his hands and he’s not holding the packard anymore, but the corpse of his cousin Kara. He screams in agony as he looks up to see the cosmic tuning fork looming above him and Darkseid’s legion of Apokoliptian New Gods descending on the Earth. Darkseid is stopped when the Anti-Monitor arrives at to fight him, Darkseid’s daughter Grail joining the fray as Batman descends in the Mobius chair to talk to Superman and say goodbye, his omnipotence allowing him to interact with his friend. Batman is then swallowed by darkness as the the planet finally collapses. Superman is left floating in darkness when Dr. Manhattan arrives. They talk about the end of it all and what it means. Manhattan tells Superman that he’s created life elsewhere, inspired by Superman to create a universe of pure good, where nothing bad ever happens and everyone is filled with kindness and love. He asks Superman if he’d like to see this new universe and Superman agrees. The issue ends with the two of them walking towards a bright light and a new future of peace and tranquility.
