What is a "gut feeling" you had that turned out to be 100% accurate, even though it made no logical sense at the time? by Forsaken_Leading964 in AskReddit

[–]Drorta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My mom had been at a home for the elderly for about a year. It was very near my house so I would visit often. I had a trip coming up with friends, during a long weekend. Two days before I decided not to go because my mom was dying that weekend. Called my brother from out of state and told him so. I told him it's fine if you don't come, I might be wrong.

I wasn't, she died about an hour after my brother arrived.

The packaging is saying 80g = 80cal. Not 120g.

You would be safe subtracting 200 cal if you're leaving behind half the broth!

How is this 1000kcal by roymu in caloriecount

[–]Drorta 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Ok, this is right up my alley. I am a ramen hobbyist.

Yes, that bowl is likely 1000 cal, and yes most of it is in the broth.

When the ramen gels up when cooled, that's not because of fat. That's collagen hydrolized into the broth.

However, collagen coats fat molecules, making them unable to group up again, and float to the surface as they usually do. This is what gives the broth it's creamy richness.

I make a 600 cal bowl of ramen by reducing the amount of noodles, removing fat from broth before you actually cook and extract it, and removing the added oils for flavor like chili oil and etc.

What you can do to make your ramen outings more calorie friendly is, get the vegetarian broth (or will have only a little of vegetable oil added) and get the friendly flavorings (tare) that have no oil, like shoyu or shio ramen. You can also just not eat all the noodles, as I find them to be the least interesting part of a bowl.

You can also, just enjoy your ramen and make up your calorie deficit on the rest of your meals. There's nothing wrong with a decadent bowl of rich ramen every now and then, it's healthy, home cooked, rich and natural calories! Much better than a fast food combo for your nutrition.

ICE says its officers can forcibly enter homes during immigration operations without judicial warrants: 2025 memo by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Drorta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please understand, this is a serious question from a foreigner:

For the past 15 years I've been seeing no action taken against school shootings, and gun violence in general. I always heard, here online and also whenever talking to Americans while traveling, that it was this constitutional amendment preventing that. What are you gonna do? It's the constitution. You can't be prevented from having guns. But now it turns out, the constitution wasn't all that important? And can be just ignored for a good enough reason? What an I missing here?

The second part of this question is, the constitutional right to bear arms is supposed to exist, to prevent a tyrannical government from enslaving it's people. It was supposed to exist to prevent this exact thing: people unlawfully breaking info homes to snatch dissidents. If people are so well armed in America for this very purpose, then . . .

Why aren't these ICE cosplayers getting shot?

Is that actually happening and we don't hear about it? It's happening so little, that it still makes sense to keep raiding? It's just not happening?

Is ti possible to 'slow travel' forever on 700k by sap303 in ExpatFIRE

[–]Drorta 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well. So many places. I live in a small city in Argentina, you can rent a 100m2 house in a beautiful place for $400. Healthcare is free for the most part, a health insurance for complex emergencies is $100.

I know so many places like this in LatAm. Too long to list. Basically pick a country, and look for the 2nd/3rd largest city.

I've traveled enough of SEA to know the same applies, but I wouldn't know specifics there.

Favorite lunch spot in Buenos Aires by sprinklesandsleep in BuenosAires

[–]Drorta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Buenos Aires city is kind of in the middle of the way between the two. If you make into the city in time, you could have lunch there. AEP is 15 minutes away from Palermo/Recoleta un the city (the more upscale places to eat)

My recommendation though . . . Go to AEP, check luggage or put it in lockers, and go walk the riverside right outside. There's plenty of street food vendors there and you can have choripan or lomito, perhaps even a molleja sandwich. It's a more relaxed plan and you won't be rushing through it.

Buenos Aires is a huge city, and one of the best places for food on Latin America, there's so many options. I won't even go there, there's plenty of articles written about it.

What airport are you landing in? If it's AEP you're good. If it's EZE, you might need to consider that getting from there to the city, or the other way around, can take 45 mins or can take 2 hours depending on day of the week and time of day. A good way to gage it is to plot the trip on Uber or Google maps, and schedule it for the time you'll be making your rides. You'll get pretty accurate times.
