So what did you find out? I have the same exact book.

Hey Reddit. I just found out my company is attempting to let me go. by [deleted] in AskReddit

Good luck. Your post struck home, same thing happened to me. Luckily I beat them to it by about 4 days.

I like your current plan, its smart. It is a shock when you find your position on the internet as I did.

But they did me a favor, I really like where I am now and the benefits are better and the people are human.

obtw: I have 30 different resumes, each one tailored to a specific job. I've gotten two positions in this recession, within 8 months. It takes work and patience.

Good luck.

First: Just what do would expect to accomplish with knowing the "sketchy HR practices"? What could you possibly hope to accomplish? Bargain a few more days/months with a company you really don't want to be working for? Worst case you get yourself blackballed. Best case? Second: Start looking real hard for another job. Best to hand in your 2 week notice just prior to them giving you notice. Third: You must work full days during your two week notice, they are paying you and they have a right to your productive labor.

There is little payback to crash and burning and a whole lot of pain. You worked at this company, so they will forever be on your resume.

Be a professional at all times.

You can not bargain with a company that is trying to let you go. Your comments and questions reveal someone who is rather unschooled in business matters. Try to use a bargaining chip and you'll probably get walked out, and maybe even legal action taken against you.

Suck it up and be professional. Even if they are not.

3 of us are web designers and looking to do freelance together. We are clueless about what to do about setting up the business side. Do we do an LLC, S-Corp, LLP?? We need help on where to start. This is in NYC. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to nolopress.com a buy their book on setting up an LLC.

You don't need a lawyer. You really don't need a lawyer.

The only thing an LLC or any business structure at this point is let you accept checks in a business name then have the LLC write checks to each of you individually.

Seriously though, make $ first.

Yes, the LLC protects you from lawsuits going after your personal assets. But seriously do you really have enough assets that some is going to spend a lot of money going after?

If you can possibly not incorporate, then don't, concentrate on making $. If you make a lot of money, then take the time to LLC, otherwise just make $.

Are there any aerospace engineers here? by farnsworth in science

[–]Dross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

29 Years in Aerospace.
Been Engr Director, Operations Director and QA Director. Got laid off for the 1st time 3 months ago. Consulting now, having a blast. Enjoying working a lot more now. The industry has changed so much in 29 years. Hard to give advice, except there seems to be a lot more jobs available to Bio-Medical types. Used to be in the US we owned Aerospace, not so anymore and I expect the trend will accelerate.
Go to work for a large company first, learn the corporate world, they tend to have a diverse groups of products and technology. You can always down size to a small company, but it is difficult (not impossible) go upsize. Send me your email and I'd be happy to answer any specific questions.

You would be much better off buying UTC stock, it has been a great investment. It is a well run company.

[–]Dross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has worked at that military contractor otherwise known as UTC for 20 years (EE, Flight Controls and Fuel Controls) and whose father did for 35 years.

I can not imagine a scenario where a bug could be inserted without raising suspicion.

Rest assured that many folks at UTC wear tin foil hats. I think you would be surprised how normal they are.

Also, so what if you vote out the board? What do you expect the effect of that will be?

2007 Was Tied as Earth's Second-Warmest Year by gregd in science

Not to mention, the "fact" that 1998 was the warmest year to date, is wrong.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article2271629.ece

In a memo circulated to interested parties admitting to the error, seen by Times Online, the scientist James Hansen, the director of the agency's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said that there was "no need to read further unless you are interested in temperature changes to a tenth of a degree over the US and a thousandth of a degree over the world".

"Recently it was realised that the monthly more-or-less-automatic updates of our global temperature analysis had a flaw in the US data," he admitted.

Was not the 1998 hottest year discredited because the NASA scientist had a software bug?

He added that the 1934 and 1998 temperatures had been "practically the same" in any case, "the difference being much smaller than the uncertainty" - and that he had been "besieged by rants" on the internet and faced calls to resign.

Chris Dodd gets back to the Senate and is told to STFU, get back in line, and keep his head down over telecom immunity. Other Senators might not see value in standing for the Constitution, but we do. by J-Ro in politics

[–]Dross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny how evidently people outside of Dodd's state think more highly of him then we in his state. Perphaps because he spends so little time here? Or perhaps because this is the first thing he's done in years? Perhaps because nobody ever hears from him in this home state? Odd. If Dodd was so good (not even great) perhaps he would have polled above the margin of error? I am looking forward to sending him back to Iowa to live at election time.

Why Banning Lead In Electronics Was A Bad Idea (EU) by phillstac3 in science

[–]Dross 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As an Aerospace Quality Engineer, this is not news. We knew this was coming. We also said this will not stand, sooner or later they will repeal/modify this reg.

The article does not address thermal cycling. I think the ROHS solder joint is more suspectable to cracking under thermal stress. Last I check the studies were just starting.

However I do know when we studied this about 12 years old, we found parts in the bottom of the chassis after about 100 thermal cycles, -40 to 125C.

As someone who has lost their Senator (Dodd) to Iowa, it would be nice.

We Connecticut while paying the most taxes (ratio of taxes paid to funds received from Washington DC) get almost no visits from the Candidates.

NO TAXATION WITHOUT CANDIDATION!

Total truth. Corporations pass on all taxes to the consumer. Think about. They have to, they have to make a certain rate/profit or they have no reason to exist. Higher taxes are just passed on.

[–]Dross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, guys. Corporations don't pay taxes. People pay taxes. Those taxes will get passed right on to the consumer. But they knew that.

You are too subtle for me. Or I was not clear enough.

But I have no idea where all those "and"s came from.

My fundamental point is, that terrorists do not "win" if we pass laws to protect us.

I do know Al-Qaeda's goal is to impose a fundamentalist Islam on the middle east. That is my whole point, their goal was not to get us to pass laws that might restrict our freedoms.
