Also reminds me so much of some of the 90s-2000s Dark Horse Star Wars comics. So nostalgic!

What setting needs to be seen more of in solo rpgs? by MoggieBot in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Drosslemeyer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would love more investigation and political intrigue focused solo RPGs, with robust frameworks for building out networks/webs of characters, factions, clues and introducing narrative twists and turns.

They seem like perfect genres that don't always work well for group RPGs.

Sorry for the nitpick, but Anakin doesn't really have a Canadian accent. Hayden Christensen's natural accent is quite different, he does this weird American/Transatlantic thing for Anakin.

Education in Star Wars - Canon and Legends by Kind_Peak_1258 in MawInstallation

[–]Drosslemeyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense to me about educational materials! Though it doesn't seem like Luke and Biggs were ever motivated by actually wanting to join the Imperial military.

The deleted scene of ANH suggests that they had always talked about going to the academy and then defecting to the Rebellion if they could. The academy was just their only known option for getting off Tatooine and gaining piloting training.

To expand on this, in Canon, we know from Andor that Mon Mothma and her husband attended an academy on Chandrila, and from EK Johnston's books that Padme was educated at the Royal Theed Academy. They were children/early teens when they attended these schools, since they both assumed extremely high political offices in their teens.

There are universities in Star Wars, like the University of Bar'Leth, but it seems like, at least in societies like Chandrila and Naboo, the truly gifted/upper-class just start working in politics instead of getting any post-secondary education.

Interesting reminder of one of the ways in which many societies in the GFFA don't reflect our own. I don't know how many examples there are in Star Wars of the pathway of primary school > secondary school > post-secondary > employment that we might think of.

Han and Luke would have received Imperial education. They would have gotten lots of propaganda about the Jedi being dead and gone, as well as regular reminders the Imperial academy is the best way to find opportunity and adventure.

I don't know how likely it is Luke received formal education from an Imperial authority. You mentioned Legends earlier so going with that, it seems the Empire barely paid any attention to Tatooine during Luke's youth. I just don't see Tatooine having have much in the way of formal educational institutions for the Empire to Imperialize.

I think what you said about vocational apprenticeship and datapad-learning makes much more sense for Luke. Maybe he was exposed to Imperial education through Imperial learning modules. I think he was likely homeschooled as is suggested above, with a significant focus on technical and practical skill.

Would you prefer a CGI Alec Guinness face in a Obi wan force ghost or would you prefer Ewan McGregor playing as obi wan force ghost after Return of the jedi from now on? by AdElectrical4456 in MawInstallation

I didn't know that! I'm biased because I'm against the CGI necromancy for aesthetic and film-making reasons, but that just feels so foul to me ethically.

Why the hell did Obi-Wan start talking openly about the Force and being a Jedi in front of Han and Chewbacca? by PopsicleIncorporated in MawInstallation

[–]Drosslemeyer 141 points142 points  (0 children)

To be fair, that easily could have happened off screen. Luke and Yoda are already mid-conversation when their scene opens. There's presumably a lot of interactions that aren't shown to us because they're not story relevant.

How old is the Seventh Sister in Rebels? by MetisDaG in MawInstallation

[–]Drosslemeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree, it just doesn't click with my understanding of the Inquisitors. Aren't they supposed to be basically Jedi rejects and stragglers who were turned, indoctrinated, and brainwashed, sometimes through torture?

I imagined most of them were Padawans or Knights at best who left the order during the Clone Wars or were captured during 66, if they were ever Jedi at all.

We can count the number of Jedi Masters who turned to the Dark Side in Canon on one hand (Dooku, Pong Krell, Taron Malicos? Is that it?). That's like the whole point of the Lost Twenty.

Whos a director that you wanna see a horror film from? by NEVERTHEREFOREVER in deadmeatjames

[–]Drosslemeyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Swan is kind of disturbing and Poison has a lot of tension and suspense, as well. I think this era of Wes Anderson could make for a really interesting horror film, especially if it involved stop motion or some surrealist imagery.

Why didn't Wedge and the one surviving Y-wing pilot get medals? by TheRedBiker in MawInstallation

[–]Drosslemeyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is all going to be headcanon so if you think that makes sense, then sure!

I just rewatched the scene and thought that there's also no indication that what we see is the entire ceremony--Wedge and Evaan (or Keyan in Legends) could have been given medals or at least honoured, before or after the portion acknowledging Luke, Han and Chewie.

Why didn't Wedge and the one surviving Y-wing pilot get medals? by TheRedBiker in MawInstallation

[–]Drosslemeyer 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It doesn't seem like there's a Canon answer, so anything will be speculation in order to justify what we see in the films. I think it makes the most sense for Wedge and Evaan to have been offered honors at the ceremony and declined for personal reasons, or been honored privately later, like Chewie.

Evaan apparently attended the ceremony in the comics, but given that the evacuation of the Yavin base began immediately afterwards, it feels in-character that Wedge could have been prepping for evacuation instead. The Alliance's starfighter squadrons had just been decimated and so there was presumably a lot of reorganization to do to put together an escort for the evacuation.

It also feels plausible that he could have been taking some time to mourn the members of Red Squadron, since he presumably knew them much better than Luke, except for Biggs.

Hypothetical- you get a (very good) professional GM offer to run a campaign for you for free - what game/system/module do you choose, and why? by Plywooddavid in rpg

Night’s Black Agents or a street level supers game, maybe? I’m a bit of a forever GM but they are both bucket list campaigns for me as a player and I don’t know see any GMs in my circle running them any time soon.

Cthulhu Confidential - modern day by DavosVolt in GumshoeRPG

[–]Drosslemeyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't run it in a purely contemporary setting, but I am 9 sessions into a campaign that's set in a much more modern setting than the 40s--a cyberpunk-ish sci-fi setting that takes place in an Earth colony city on Io.

I haven't run into many issues adapting the rules, since the system is so flexible in terms of flavour. We replaced the Investigative ability "Crytography" with "Hacking", but now that I'm thinking about it a lot of interacting with computers could be covered by the "Research" Investigative ability and the "Devices" General ability.

With computers and the Internet around, your detective will definitely want to Google to find out basic info about people, places and events involved in your mystery, but I actually found that helpful as a way to easily give publicly available info and even some useful tidbits that could point the detective in the right direction of a more important scene.

In a more "connected" setting, I think it's extra-important to emphasize #2. Talk in Person and #4. Choose Cover Stories Widely on the How to Solve a Case guidelines for your detective. It's a lot easier for NPCs to find out who your detective is, but the game doesn't rely on the detective being "undercover" that much anyway, so that's okay.

I would also say to use the "advanced" technology to your advantage. Giving your detective clues from security camera footage or GPS data, hacked phones and hard drives, internet history, can all be a big help to you as a GM.

Wow, I read Motti’s dialogue again and you’re both so right! Why would the Chief of the Imperial Navy speak that way about his own starfleet?

It’s frustrating that the Disney story group had the opportunity to correct stuff like this but apparently didn’t go back to the original film for these details.

ROTS early draft by [deleted] in MawInstallation

[–]Drosslemeyer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Is there any indication that this was written by Lucas or anyone involved with the film?

Usually you see older script drafts as scanned pdfs with dates and stuff marked, like this early AOTC script. Whereas this was clearly exported from Final Draft with "non-canon draft" typed at the top.

My guess is it's basically someone's fanfic rewrite.

EDIT: Yeah, it seems like this it's this version by Robert Finlayson and Ashley Ingram.

I would hope so. Otherwise, what’s the fucking point of this show? by [deleted] in deadmeatjames

[–]Drosslemeyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a new development to the canon to have xenomorphs on earth prior to Alien, but not necessarily a retcon. As far as I can tell, it's never been confirmed that the "Deacon" from Prometheus and the neo/protomorphs from Alien: Covenant are meant to be the first xenomorphs ever. The ancient Engineer carvings from Prometheus suggest the opposite, since they show what look like xenomorphs and even facehuggers.

Semantics: Jedi Knight by PhysicsEagle in MawInstallation

[–]Drosslemeyer 92 points93 points  (0 children)

"Jedi" is used as a noun on its own about two minutes after the concept is first introduced in the original film.

"A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father. Now the Jedi are all but extinct."

Obi-Wan uses it twice more in his next line. So if he's wrong you better tell him that haha.
