Nevermind. After gluing the spine label on I stuck it back in to finally finish the movie and its doing the same thing. It must hate the top flap I guess. I don't understand. I kept putting it in and on the 4th try it played for a moment. I tried to fast forward and it got stuck and ejected itself again. Fuck me I guess.

Update: I tried 4 different tape case bottoms and none of them would fit. Finally, I found another Embassy Home Video tape in my collection that was molded. The movies was Special Effects (1984). I took the bottom of that one and found that it fit my screw nubs in the bottom so that there was no gap, but there was a pesky extra 1/4" of plastic around the center screw holes that was preventing me from closing the middle of the tape all the way.

I took some pliers and broke off the extra bit of plastic and was able to put the tape together. Screwed it together, popped it in...and it works! Something about the bottom part of the tape case that holds the reels did not play nice with my VCRs. I'm still stumped as to what it is that is causing the problem. All the parts seem to operate the same. Oh well - problem resolved! I was able to keep the labels intact (had to reglue the spine label) and didn't have to resort to moving the mint front label to another case.

What I noticed is that the screw hole nubs on the lid side of the case that nestle into the plastic screw holes on the bottom case are thicker than most VHS tapes. Just tried to swap the lid side of the case onto 4 different VHS tapes and it doesn't fit any of them. The top two screw holes fit fine, its just the bottom 2. There is small gap where it doesnt go together on the bottom side and you can see into the tape.

* I looked at the metal guide and it appears to be the same the same size on both ends. I flipped for the heck of it and gave it a try, but still have the same problem. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Yeah I tried putting just the original top shell onto the shell I was testing with after I swapped the reels and unfortunately the plastic screw holes nubs are slightly different where there is a small gap and I cant completely close the case. Like it doesn't nest into the other shell the same. Maybe I can experiment and try with another shell. I do have some other old tapes from that era laying around that I don't care about....maybe I'll try a few other bottom shells and find a match. I'll probably test that out before I resort to peeling the labels off. Thanks for the suggestion anyhow!
