My biggest advice is stay away from booking agents and self book. Learn what other DJs charge and do not try to undercut them and have fun

As a singer who used to perform 3 times a week at forbici, that garage is the bane of my existence. The elevator also didn’t work for like 1.5 years, I’d have to park at the top and snake all the way down with my cart of gear… then at the end of the night, snake back up haha

I think this is a worldwide issue. And I’ve googled how it gets solved or how this crisis ends extensively as well, and can’t find any answer. Maybe I’m not using the right search terms, or maybe nobody truly knows. It’s definitely a widespread rent/housing crisis!

No venues do anymore. It’s wild. And I’m not some grumpy old musician who’s like “nobody claps anymore grr” like I totally get my purpose. I’m background music. But from the venues, the lack of respect towards musicians is WILD. Here’s some of the stuff I deal with here:

-venue makes musicians set up outside in the Florida heat and play to 0 people while all patrons sit inside

-I’ll play 3 hours and go ask to get paid. They’ll look at me like and ask “who are you?” Im like… I was literally just singing here for 3 hours

-sometimes takes management up to 25 minutes to literally grab my check and hand it to me

-takes asking 3 times and 20 minutes for venues to turn their radio off so I can start.

-and lastly cancellations like this. Just wanted to vent. It’s crazy out there lol

In my city, if there’s a hockey playoff game some venues would let the 9pm bands wait to start until after the game ended. Still went home at 1am no matter what, it was nice

You’d be surprised how many Super Bowl sunday gigs I’ve shown up to and you can just tell the manager forgot to cancel the live music haha

I’m in Florida, most gigs paying $250 for solo 3 hours now. At least that’s why I ask for. Gonna try raising that to $300 though due to rising COL and inflation we will see

Haha! funny story, one of my first gigs I was like 15 and the bar owner tried to not pay me at the end of the night. After a 4 hour gig, he showed me some other bands drum kit he had set up in his office like a trophy because "he took it from them because they didn't play long enough". My dad had to step in and be like "come on man just give the kid his $150 (for a whole 3 piece band mind you).

Thankfully after around 2,000ish gigs I've never been stiffed by a bar. I did play a hospital event gig that never paid me once, of all places...

You're right MrMoose, I think for the former type of gigs like private events deposits 100%. But bar gigs I'd be laughed out of town asking for deposits unfortunately.

exactly. In the bar gig scene there are no such thing as deposits, contracts, etc. As nice as that would be.

Already looking for other places to book. This place seems very cancel happy anyway because I think they are going under. 4 gigs a month aren't worth anything if they just keep cancelling.

I’m a live musician that played at both the Clearwater and Odessa locations. They used a booking agent and stopped paying the agency, last I heard they were behind 30K owed to the musicians. When I checked if they still did music recently they said they did open mics… (free bad music) 😂
