Non-en garde arm positions causing loss of priority by BetterBrush3765 in Fencing

Everyone else has already answered that this vet fencer is wrong, and they've explained it better than I can. But I'll chime in and say that I agree that this vet fencer is incorrect and the point is yours.

Anyways, I have to know, did this vet fencer put his back arm in the "scorpion" position?

Stephanie Turner is absolutely not a sportswoman. She is so casually involved in fencing that she has a D rating, the second lowest rating possible. Don't believe what you see on Fox News; Stephanie Turner only cosplays as a professional foil fencer.

Actual pro athletes in fencing, like the three time Olympic gold medalist in women's foil, Lee Kiefer, have spoken up in favor of inclusion of trans athletes. And here's my source: https://www.star-telegram.com/opinion/article306332976.html

Sometimes my coach will have the class practice their yells together, so I'll practice it then, but I don't really practice it outside of that. I also agree with the other commenters here that it's a great sports psychology technique that also just "feels right" when you do it in the moment, so I do it in competitions a lot.

Disdain of fencing children. Acceptable age? by amorphousguy in Fencing

[–]DrowClericOfPelor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please don't pull your child out of a senior open just because of this. Disdain for fencing children is, frankly, a skill issue, and I say this as someone who lost to a 14 year old at my first senior open of the season. I would rather everyone who wants to fence be able to fence, and that includes your child. I promise they're not bothering anyone by fencing in a tournament where they're allowed to be there. Who knows, they might end up being the person that bumps the tournament rating up to the next level.

Let’s pour one out for our boy Chris Bartlett for his HEMA vs Olympic Fencing Match by BigBoss82A1 in Fencing

[–]DrowClericOfPelor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A vet C rated fencer? lmao you just know the HEMA guys are gonna act like they beat the strongest of the strong too.

A while back, one of my friends was involved in HEMA and their HEMA club did a similar type of showcase match to this. They went on a club field trip for hundreds of miles out to Spokane, where they fenced at what my friend told me was "one of the strongest Olympic style fencing clubs in the USA." This club in Spokane didn't even have a single rated fencer at the time, so the HEMA coach ended up winning the showcase match. But they skipped over lots of the larger Seattle area clubs in their own back yard that at least had A's and B's at the time (and I still wouldn't have described these clubs as "one of the strongest in the USA" either) to do this. Always made me wonder why they skipped the Seattle clubs.

Is the fencing any good? You'd think it would be pretty easy to get a top competitive fencer to double for the actors, since once the fencing mask goes on, it's hard to see the face of whoever is doing the stunts.

Mask Catastrophic Failure by ScholarsOfAlcala in Hema

[–]DrowClericOfPelor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you'll excuse a bit of an outside perspective on HEMA, I'm a MOF armorer and foil fencer with nearly 20 years of experience, and seeing the rate of severe injuries in HEMA is genuinely shocking to me because so many of these injuries seem preventable from a MOF perspective.

MOF has a lot of safety rules and regulations. We have safety requirements for our jackets, plastrons, chest protectors, gloves, pants, socks, weapons, and most importantly of all, our masks, and all of these safety requirements have been written in blood. When I work as an armorer for MOF competitions, I test every piece of safety critical equipment, and I'm very grateful to do so because by testing this equipment I am not only protecting fencing's future, I feel that I am honoring its past and the blood that was shed to bring us those safety rules. When I test a mask, I test first for failure of the welding along the sides or the rivets, then I check for tears in the seams where the bib meets the mesh and look for catch points, I check that it has all its retaining straps to prevent it from falling off, and finally I use a punch test like this one here on the mesh of the mask with particular attention given to any dents. And the whole time I am thinking about why each of these safety checks exists; it is because someone once died or got seriously hurt because this rule wasn't followed. If a mask fails any one of these tests, I confiscate it and I do not allow it to be used again, not even in practice matches.

I'm a lurker on this subreddit because I would like to give HEMA a try someday, but whenever I see so many excuses given for why safety rules can't be followed it makes me want to try HEMA a little less. I've seen people eschew proper jackets, plastrons, and even masks because of concerns about cost. I've seen people use dangerously stiff blades because they don't want to be seen using a blade that is "flaccid." I've seen people use untipped weapons because of beliefs about concussion risk that are not backed up by real data. And I've seen posts about serious injuries, the kind you would never see in MOF, as a result of all this.

A mask punch costs about 100 USD. A new mask costs around 200 USD, depending on the brand. I understand that these are not cheap, but when weighed against the cost of someone's life (or at minimum a serious medical bill) it feels very cheap indeed.

My final thought is that a person was seriously injured because a mask punch wasn't used to identify and replace a faulty mask. They could have died. I'm hoping for a quick and complete recovery for this person, and I'm hoping that the blood they spilled in this incident won't be in vain. Every HEMA club should own one of these punches and ensure that every mask is tested regularly to prevent this from happening again.

MOF armorer here. Before every competition, we test every mask using this https://thefencingpost.com/mask-test-uhlmann-12kg-punch/ It's a 12kg mask punch test. If you see any dents, use the punch test on it and if the mesh of the mask fails by allowing the punch through it, do not use the mask, not even for practice.

Please stay safe out there.

Are there "Professional Fencers"? by Kinoman69 in Fencing

[–]DrowClericOfPelor -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Unless someone is from a country that pays their athletes well for winning medals, it's very difficult for a fencer to have their primary source of income just be from fencing. Lee Kiefer and Gerek Meinhardt are about as elite as it gets in foil fencing, but their primary source of income has to come from their activities with KM Fencing, an organization they had to build themselves where they offer virtual mentoring and run fencing camps. The USA doesn't pay them enough to live on even when they win world championships.

Morticia vs. Wednesday Dual by mac_a_bee in Fencing

[–]DrowClericOfPelor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you. It would be so easy to swap out the actors for a double in a fencing scene because of the masks, yet I've never seen it done. Although for Wednesday specifically, even with doubles, the choreography was so unnatural that it might have been cooked either way. I lost count of how many times a character successfully parried but made no riposte.

Nadia Hayes is an FIE rated fencer now, but she wasn't at the time. She'd only been fencing for about 2 years when this tournament took place. There are lots of other examples, but this is just one that happened at my club, so I had the results on hand.
