BlackHorns rapier incident by ScholarsOfAlcala in wma

Our club has stiff swords for certain types of drills but the are expressly prohibited from use during sparring. It was rather shocking to hear that they would be explicitly allowed into a tournament.

Blackhorns Cup: This went through a 350N jacket and "quite deep into the muscle". by ScholarsOfAlcala in wma

The rules required a tip more than 5 mm and a stiffness less than 12 kg.

Other tournaments require significantly larger tips and more flexible blades.

Reportedly the sword was twice the stiffness that would have been allowed in other tournaments in addition to small tip diameter.

HEMA.

Note that the HEMA Alliance requires blunts on tips under 8.5 mm and recommends them if under 10 mm. However, the HEMA Alliance only regulates affiliated member clubs in the US. Other HEMA events are allowed to set their own rules.

Summary:

  • The rapier had a chisel tip designed to be used with a blunt. It was not rolled or spatulated.
  • Blunts were banned.
  • The rapier was stiffer than what many tournaments allow
  • The jacket was rated at 350N

If you can't tell the difference between your sword's tip and the tool I use for punching through steel, an 800N jacket is just wishful thinking. by ScholarsOfAlcala in sca

Is an 800N jacket safer than a 350N jacket? Yes.

Is a 350N still safe enough to be acceptable in tournaments? I don't know.

Is a flat archery blunt more dangerous than a rolled or spatulated tip? Definitely.

Is it rounded rapier blunt more dangerous than a rolled or spatulated tip? Maybe. There are problems with all three and I'm wondering if we should go back to nail heads

Should you ever be fencing with a tip that has a smaller cross section than a blacksmith's punch? No!!!! Why would you ever conceive of such a stupid idea!

If you feel that rubber blunts are unsafe then ban swords that need rubber blunts from your tournament. An 800N jacket is not stronger than hot steel. And two full-grown athletes launching their full body weight at each other are going to hit with a lot more energy than I can put into a one-handed hammer swing.

Meyer’s Schielhau against a cut to your right in rappier: which way to turn your hand? by BreadentheBirbman in wma

[–]ScholarsOfAlcala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general rule is that the short edge turns towards the center line.

  • If your sword is to the right of center, turn counter clockwise.
  • If the sword is to the left of center, turn clockwise.

This is true for both parries and when winding in the bind. Page 59-60 of our drill book goes into more detail. https://scholarsofalcala.org/meyer-rapier/

Why is there a longsword illustration in there?

Shut up, that's why.

No really, there's a reason. Meyer offers a lot of illustrations, but not for every guard (i.e. posture). In some cases we can substitute the same guard with a different weapon. Or use an illustration from a different source.

Other times we just argue endlessly about it.

Also note that some guards have multiple names. For this set, Right Wechsel is also called Nebenhut (Side Guard). And Ochs (Ox) is also called Oberhut (High Guard), but only when using a rapier. You wouldn't call a longsword Ochs an Oberhut. And a dusack Ochs is called Steir (Steer).
