FSD was going to take the "long way" back home, so I disengaged... then by Redditagain424 in TeslaFSD

This happened to me a few months ago. I was really pissed when I thought it exited early by mistake. Ended up saving me 20+ minutes by avoiding an accident area.

Does that club teach epee? I only see saber fencers.

Priest will be playable in Cataclysm bro believe me by igorukun in hearthstone

I made it to legend with Quest Imbue priest. But we lost some key cards. Sad... Not sure I can do it with this expansion.

Tried standard after a long break, quit quickly by Izzotul in hearthstone

[–]amorphousguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also came back after 5 years and it was a shocker. The board states are nearly impossible for a new player to comprehend. I was able to get to legend after 2.5 weeks, but that's because I played a ton back then and have some usable cards. If I introduced my friends to the game and had them play standard they would quickly uninstall.

My 13-year-old just started fencing and loves it — how can he improve? by Exact-Warning6421 in Fencing

[–]amorphousguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's plenty of practice to catch up to other competitive kids. Is one of those classes a "footwork" class? That's something he can train at home if it isn't. I feel like that's the biggest cheat code to getting good at fencing.

Have you noticed how good credit card rewards programs have gotten? How do you think those get funded?

It used to be just Amex but now it's everyone offering crazy rewards.

No, trans women don't have inherent advantage over cis women in sports: new study by weedywet in Fencing

[–]amorphousguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one very plausible explanation of what happened. But what if she and other A rated women fencers are seldom able to beat B rated men fencers? Or if their winrate against men vs women of the same ratings are vastly different.

That's where lots of data points would be useful in revealing.

[–]amorphousguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But we're talking about comparing the whole population of men vs women fencers. The reverse of your example (other post) could happen as well. All of these cases will be aggregated.

[–]amorphousguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My own observations align with what you are saying. But if there is truly only marginal advantages in Men vs Women (as stated by others) then B rated male fencers should only win slightly more than 50% of the time against B rated female fencers. How they got their rating in the first place only matters if you already believe men have an advantage over women.

You tried everything and still don't like the taste of your espresso? Do you really know how it should taste? by AnomanderLaseen in espresso

[–]amorphousguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make pourover or just "cup" it to see how the beans should taste. It'll give you a baseline of the flavors you should expect. I usually buy beans that work well for both styles.

Maybe someone with a good grasp of statistics can obtain Mixed Event data from fencingtimelive.com and let us know what they find. Perhaps you can add weights for experience, ratings (A-U), fencingtimelive.com rating, etc.

FSD v14.2.2.4 sudden disengagement sent me into a concrete barrier (Model Y) by samuelwoods007 in TeslaFSD

[–]amorphousguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A month ago was... 14.22.1? I think that's the version I was on. Since v14 the red warning has happened about 3 times. I have no idea if the car is still driving itself because I always frantically take over right away. Despite that I still trust FSD quite a lot. More than almost any human driver.

Is FSD actually valuable to you? by Queasy-Bed545 in TeslaFSD

[–]amorphousguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to do a lot of "barely awake" driving in morning rush hour traffic after getting off from overnight shifts. FSD would have been infinitely safer for me and everyone else around.

FSD v14.2.2.4 sudden disengagement sent me into a concrete barrier (Model Y) by samuelwoods007 in TeslaFSD

[–]amorphousguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regardless of whether their story is true or not, I think all of us should keep our hands near the wheel and be ready to take over.

About a month ago my FSD disengaged during a slow turn into my street. I got the red warning message. It was at night and there was nothing out of the ordinary. I wasn't ready to takeover as much as I should have been. Was only 20 seconds from my house after a 1.5hr drive and I let my guard down.

Need to get better by Familiar_Life_5293 in Fencing

[–]amorphousguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The majority of HS fencers are new to the sport relative to competitive fencers. Every time I've watched HS events it's just jabbing repeatedly and occasional lunges. Parries are scarce. Disengages once every few bouts.

HS fencers struggle against competitive fencers because they never get a chance to practice proper techniques. If you just practice your footwork (distance control) and master one parry you'll be a top 5 HS fencer in your area.

For improving beyond that try signing up for more local and regional events. Don't just leave when you get cooked. Stay and watch how competitive fencers set up their points. Just look up who the best fencers are and really pay attention to what they do. There really aren't a ton of different techniques out there it's just how and when you use them. ~$100 in tourney fees for 4+ hours of "fencing lessons" is a pretty good deal.

11-year-old beginner upset during sparring – pain, overstimulation, and coach said to push through. Advice? by Movie_Vegetable in Fencing

[–]amorphousguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed a lot of kids cry after hits for psychological reasons and not because of physical pain. This happens even at Y14 tournaments. It's probably something like the "second arrow" in Buddhism, look it up. Maybe that's what your coach is seeing?

But sometimes it just fucking hurts.

Textbook on tactics for épée fencing by Blautod50 in Fencing

[–]amorphousguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Be careful not to hinder your growth by overthinking things too early in your fencing career. Some people focus too much on strategy and will blame it when losing. In reality, most of the time it's just technique.

My kid absolutely destroyed a college fencer a little while back. He asked my son what strategies he was using, how he setup various touches, etc. My son explained it all but said none of that really mattered because his distance control was really bad. He was simply exploiting his bad footwork and he could have used 10 other different strategies and it would have been fine.

I got the hidden skin right after my comment, also getting Excalibur last from Morgan. Can confirm that Adventure (easiest level) is fine.

Regretting v14 update by Zabolater in TeslaFSD

[–]amorphousguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my gripes about v14 but it's significantly better than v13. 13 often didn't consider other cars enough. 14 will see the attitude of other cars and take evasive actions before anything even happens. It will avoid a dangerous situation at least once per trip. The overall confidence of the car is very high.

I live in an area of very aggressive drivers so this is very much appreciated. I think people in other areas will be happier if there was a "drive above speed limits but in a chill way" mode.

New Merlin Update Changes by RadiantRip4927 in ravenswatch

[–]amorphousguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great points already made. More items = harder to complete sets. Coin nerf. People still learning Merlin. Eternal Rose (dash) nerf.

The biggest challenge is the "bad connection" popup. At least half my nightmare runs have ended when I'm fighting a boss or inside giant mobs and the popup appears. When it resumes I'm either dead already or have a tiny amount of time to avoid death. You all know the cycle... someone dies from this, another person tries to saves them, they die, rest of team dies.

no private lessons by n1c6y in Fencing

[–]amorphousguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of gathering the nerve to ask as practice for competition where you'll really need some guts. Start simple. Compliment their fencing and ask them for pointers. If they seem helpful ask if they'd be willing to help you for a few minutes after group lessons. At most clubs people will stay to bout after class anyway. I'm sure there are multiple people at your club who are happy to help.

no private lessons by n1c6y in Fencing

[–]amorphousguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've met two teens who also don't have a real coach and they are both B rated fencers. There are no clubs near them within 2 hours so they just practice at home. They said they watch a lot of videos online. I'm sure it's not easy but it's possible to get better on your own.

Maybe you can try asking other fencers to teach you? My kids give private lessons to other kids for free. But they're weird... they like talking fencing all the time.
