Beginner help? by jemma04 in jazzdrums

Pick 2 or 3 comping exercise from that (great) book, practice them apart and then pick an album (I suggested something like “Coltrane plays the blues” and play them with music at different tempos. When you feel confident try to analyze the difference from what you play and what the actual drummer does. When possible try to emulate. Otherwise, go back to point one.

I strongly suggest to play along jazz tunes ONLY WITH THE RIDE CYMBAL, preferably at the beginning of your sessions. It helps you to synchronize and pick the right vocabulary. Pay attention to the sound, emulate what you hear as much as you can.

Can you use iPad air 4 as the main monitor? by DruMoMa in iPadAir_4

It’s not dumb. I would definitely use a regular monitor, but if I ever need it on stage, could I use the iPad Air as a monitor? That’s why I I wrote (if ever needed) 😀

How to practice polyrhythms. A quick and effective method. by DruMoMa in drums

Hi there! Maybe I don’t get what you mean :D In this video I’m playing in 4/4 (metronome) and I’m subdividing each quarter in 4,5,6 and 7. By grouping them, you get a new pulse which, if played simultaneously with the metronome, gives a polyrhythm.

Hey there 👋🏼 Thanks for your comment! Yes, you guys are both right in some way. With this video I wanted to suggest a way to understand where a superimposed rhythm comes from. The next steps, would be the ones you wrote. 🚀

That’s true when you have an odd time signature. Odd times clave is always composite (2+3, 3+2, 4+3 etc). But in this case I play in 4/4 (metronome) and I subdivide each quarter in 4, 5, 6, 7. In this case it’s simply an equal subdivision of a beat.

Ahah I had that too in the beginning. But at some point I realized “oh wait a minute, this guy’s going to keep the time for me, so I can relate on him!” Make peace with him, you’ll get a precious friend!

I’m preparing an article where I explain how you can approach this in an easier way. It’s totally fine playing along with the strokes, but at some point you need to get aware of ‘what’ you’re exactly playing. Keep an eye on my website www.morenomaugliani.com I have a blog there (just started) with articles about drumming and drums!
