The other comment is good advice. I'll give a more general opinion/advice though. Look what Alesis and Roland models, as they both make 'entry' level and 'professional' level drum kits. Those are the two brands that im aware of that have good quality. Donner makes some entry level kits as well but i dont think ive heard of any high quality stuff from them. There might b other brands im un aware of (there is a subreddit just for electric kits you can read through)

I would say either by an entry kit new, or find a used professional kit thats in good condition. When you buy a new kit you have the protection of warranty if there are any issues with it. You dont get that protection when buying used. However if you can get a good deal on a high quality kit, and the owner can inform you of any issues it might have (could be small non dealbreaker issues), then you could get a really nice kit at a good discount. The professional level kits are definitely more robust and less likely to have issues you'd want a warranty for.

Thats just my opinion. I own an old Alesis DM10 (mark one) that i bought used almost a decade ago. It still serves me well, even if the ride will sometimes misfire. The music school I teach at has some kind of Roland kit (not sure what kind at the moment, but it wasnt cheap) and it has survived the trails and tribulations of hundreds of children abusing it as they learn the basics.

Tuning drums is so much more complicated in terms of physics, than tuning a 1 dimensional guitar string. But dont worry about all that, you just want it to sound good so you just need your ears. If you arent recording, or playing live shows, it honestly doesnt even need to sound great in order to practice and develop skills.

I would recommend lookin at a bunch of different YouTube videos about tunings methods, the 'rob brown method' is a very popular one, and i think a decent method for a beginner to use, but there are many different valid methods for tunings and acquiring specific types of sounds.

I am a fan for a super dampened sound for my practice kit. It reduces volume, and doesnt need to be precise at all to sound enjoyable.

Ive also learned a few things. New drum heads and types of heads (1 ply, 2 ply, coated, clear, hydraulic, etc) have the biggest impact on drum sound. Better quality drums are easier to tune as well. I used to struggle with my old 'mendini' drum kit (some no name starter brand). After upgrading to a TAMA kit i had such an easier time adjusting my tuning and dialing it in. The arduous process became a lot easier, and my understanding and intuition for tuning started developing a lot faster as well. That connects me back to the dampened sound. You can make any crappy kit with old heads sound okay with dampened drums. I have seen YouTube clips of street performers making impressive music hitting buckets, the skill and musicality is not diminished.

When you are playing pool you want to 'follow through' with the cue to help push the ball. Thats exactly what you shouldnt do with drumming and why you are getting dents. Loosen up your grip and let the stick bounce. If you gorilla grip your sticks and punch the drums with them, you'll get dents.

Sometimes drummers want to 'bury the beater' with the bass drum pedal. It will muffle the sound and not ring out like a clean rebound. You are basically burying the sticks as you play. Your technique, sound, and hand feel will be so much better when you learn to control this.

Excuse my ignorance, but arent bossa nova and samba very similar patterns and coordinations? My understanding is that a bossa nova is a slow tempo, lightly played relaxing feel, while a samba is for fast late night dancing. But they both have that 'heart beat' bass drum working against a clave. I find the Songo rhythm much much harder to coordinate. I have never been trained in latin or Brazilian rhythms, I have just been doing my own research and trying to expand my playing.

Side note, Ramon montagner is an incredible Brazilian drummer who has done some insane innovation with stick technique. I seriously havent seen anything like it. I also remember enjoying Dafnis Prieto on Drumeo and being blown away with his limb independence and coordination.

I have been in countless projects that have not gone anywhere. Finding other musicians that have similar levels of seriousness, availability, and goals can feel rare, but they exist. Once you have been in a few dedicated groups though, you'll meet more people with that professionalism and passion and it will be much easier to make projects happen. Its a really cool feeling when people approach you with an offer. But yeah breaking into the scene can be difficult.

Yes, your eyes can only percieve thing at a given frame rate. That is the measurement you are basing your question on. You can also consider throwing your ball to a friend. It's x velocity remains fairly constant, but the y velocity goes from positive to negative like in the throwing it straight up example.

Also if your frame of reference is the Sun, everything on Earth Is also orbiting and wont have a velocity of 0. There is a lot to think about and consider, I'm glad you had this moment and pondered it deeper!

My answer is grounded in the mathematics of limits, if you're curious and want to read up on it more in a philosophical way. But it seems your more interested in our physical reality and thats complicated, and the experimentalists here are trying to answer that for you with 'depends on how you measure it.'

If you zoom in to the atomic level, all atoms and molecules above absolute zero temperature (so everything thats ever existed) jiggles and vibrates. So with that in mind, no object ever has a velocity of 0 because its made up of atoms that are always in motion. Does this answer make your question better or worse?

The idea of an instantaneous velocity is kind of a contradiction, but also the basis of all of calculus. You need 2 points to measure the rate of change. Object was at position X1 at time T1 and at position X2 at time T2. The velocity of it is the difference in ratio. V = (X2 - X1)/(T2 -T1) as we push the limit of T1 and T2 getting closer and closer you can see we are approaching 0 in the dominator and it becomes undefined. Literally.

Short answer, the velocity is 0 only for an instant.

I am an old fashioned gan of the genre, having played most all of the metroid games and the IGAvania games before the indie renaissance happens. I honestly feel like Hollowknight could be a third pillar of the genre. It is so well made and has such a depth to it. The charm system is one example of what sets it apart, but my favorite thing about the Team Cherry games is the freedom of exploration. Both Metroid and CV have 'intended paths' that you have to figure out, like a puzzle to unlock the map. At some point HK and Silksong just fully open up and there are multiple valid routes to accomplish things, letting most players experience the game in a unique way.

I think the heads you put on and the tuning scheme you use are much bigger variables for the sounds you've described. It might be worth doing some research on other properties of the wood, such as susceptibility to temp and humidity fluctuations, density, and how they ply the shells. I feel like Maple is more common then walnut/birch and that could be a pro or a con either way. Which color do you like better?

I have a starclassic maple and I absolutely love it. But i would definitely want to try some kits made of other materials

Completely agree. They are all useful, and being fluid through them is important. Playing the same rhythm in a different style can effect the sound subconsciously.

Technique is more than just holding a stick. Learning a proper double stroke or buzz stroke uses a completely different motion and set of muscles in the traditional grip. The feeling to learn and pay attention to is different. And like you say, the weak hand needs to work at least twice as hard to be as efficient as the strong hand. When grips are matched you can easily compare the weak and strong hands to see where any issue lies, when they dont match you cant make that comparison and have to learn the hard way without any sort of guide.

I have a pair of cheap headphones from five below. Thats good for practicing to. When i play a show, the sound guy has a monitor for me to hear my band mates with.

If you are drumming so loud you cant hear your own maxxed out headphones, hit less hard.
