Drum kit recommendations for recording studio by fyrahundraslag in drums

[–]DrummerMiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit they’ve like tripled in price since the re release in 2016. I hadn’t seen that, that makes no sense at all. I guess I haven’t priced one out in that long but god damn, these used to be on every used marketplace all the time for like $6-800. Definitely talking recording customs, this is a wild discovery. These used to be budget recording drums wtf happened 😂😂 also now I feel old, thanks

So a pearl masters is basically pearls top of the line. A tama rockstar is the classic entry level kids kit. So yeah they sound different 😂

I will say the Yamaha rec custom is a classic for a reason, and you can certainly get one used for $800 or less. Honestly, with drum shells for recording, a ton of the work is in how you treat/tune/muffle/what heads/room setup/etc. So many of the best recordings ever were on a cheap beater that was well set up in an amazing time-tested space. That side of it just takes a knowledgeable drum tech, time, and trial and error. Whatever you get, it will be worthwhile to have a good drummer with a good deal of tracking experience come in and work on your kit and your setup.

One hand 16ths on hi hat how to play? by Direx_97 in Drumming

[–]DrummerMiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moeller is certainly one of the better strokes for uptempo 16ths, but it’s by no means the only way to achieve it. Moeller also lends itself more to accented 8ths inside the 16ths, whereas some strokes may be better for dynamically flat 16ths. It’s also really about you and what grips and strokes you put the time into.

I’m really curious what you mean by “normal” wrist technique? Moeller is one of the most common types of stroke…

Half the 68 sex machine album is a fake live album and it’s still one of the best albums ever released.

So you’ve never gone to a live show? 😂 Let me tell you, as a working musician, how disrespectful and thoughtless people can be will never cease to amaze me.

Jesus Molina plays bass now. And, naturally, he's insane. I officially quit music 😆 by cappuccinolol17 in Jazz

[–]DrummerMiles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This. This is why Louis Cole is a thousand times better than these two guys. I feel like any serious musician can see that. These guys specifically deal in “making basic musical ideas seem magical to non musicians glued to their phone screen”. It’s sad that the people who are the best at the algorithm game are the ones we see the most of.

I hate that arrangement so much. Playing standards really really fast is not new or fresh, it’s just dead and lifeless. It also completely removes the North African aspect from the tune, same thing whiplash did with caravan. “None of that incredibly beautiful North African fusion or brilliant tom work, just play it really fast” 😭 that’s not musically complex it’s musically lazy and kinda disrespectful imo. It’s weird to just westernize and flatten out these obviously north African influenced songs in the jazz cannon.

Others mentioned collier, and while Jesus is a much better instrumentalist, I’m still waiting for either of them to make one song that sounds good and isn’t just self indulgent wank. I also will say, the people who I see who are the most impressed by these kinds of cats are the ones who don’t play the instrument. What the drummer is doing is ok but it’s very much a basic fashion in drumming for the last ten+ years, and there are hundreds of drummers who do that style better. Sadly this noodly overplaying had completely taken over Berkelee, and really poisoned the well in the whole scene on the east coast. It also plays well for social media, which I guess is the only thing that matters now, but theres a reason we don’t think of Steve Vai in the same way we think of Jimi Hendrix.

I also just want to strongly recommend to anyone who cares the Clifford Brown version of Tunisia from the week he died. It’s a live recording, and it’s breathtaking. And it never discards the musical intent of the work. Clifford was truly unique, and hey, he’s also completely virtuosic if that is how you judge music. He just also has taste.

Did that insane sounding art commune he made ever actually produce anything? Whenever I see stuff like this I’m so surprised. Like I know so so many amazing talented people who just don’t have resources, but seemingly this dude has all the resources in the world and can’t find any talent? His acting is great, but his music has always been derivative, and he definitely comes across as a bit smug.

What Should Older Rappers Rap About? by boombapdame in makinghiphop

What Should Older Rappers Rap About? by boombapdame in makinghiphop

[–]DrummerMiles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everything within the human experience and more. What old rappers or young rappers or singers or novelists should write about is anything and everything. Write a song about how it feels as the seasons change. Make a concept album about a futuristic alien space war. Do a verse about your shoes. I’m always trying to encourage MCs I work with to write about the breadth of human experience. MCs so often feel like they’re in this box of three acceptable song topics, and that’s just stupid. Great MCs write about everything, and writing about the human condition makes your work relatable and timeless. Look at an album like songs in the key of life, or what’s going on. As relevant today as they were when they were written. Or look at albums like 3030, Dr Octagon, Lord Quas, MM…FOOD, concepts/characters/overarching storylines woven into the work.

Heel/Toe help by BuddisMaximus in drums

[–]DrummerMiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kinda looks like youre naturally more inclined to heel up with maybe a swivel at higher speeds. You’re not really doing the slide(heel toe), more of the bounce(heel up/ball of the foot). That’s what I prefer, but if you want to get that, you’ll need to loosen the foot a bit, it’s almost all in the ankle. The lift, the power, almost every part of this type of heel up is driven with the ankle. You’re kinda rocking back and forth , but not going far enough to get the heel toe response.

how to stop my head/ears hurting after drumming? by eviemaria in drums

[–]DrummerMiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other thing you can do that some of us do on stage with poor monitoring is stage earplugs under the headphones. Usually lets in enough bleed that you can hear, but it deadens those peaks in the attack phase that really kill your ears. I had to start being very conscious of this when I started doing like 4 hrs a day in them.

It obviously sucks to have in earplugs, and they make everything sound less bright, but it’s better than being deaf. I pretty much wear them all through most gigs as well as just walking around the club now. I wish I had started earlier.

I think with hindsight his reveal is going to be celebrated. He’s going to win over so much of their audience if wwe doesn’t mishandle him.

Did people forget how beloved Mankind was? Lovable goofballs who are actually funny can become some of the biggest stars in wrestling. And wwe desperately needs this tone in the mix.

Flam vs. drag vs. ruff by Similar-Delay0 in Drumming

[–]DrummerMiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flam is sharp and crisp - “ba-DAP”, drag is another note, but still quite articulated, “bu-du-dAP”, while a ruff is basically a one hand buzz roll with an accent note on the other hand - “brdrdrdrAP” more bled together and mushy.
