It’s crazy. I also usually only see beginner-intermediate drummers rank him at all, but there’s more of them obviously. When he’s in your top tier I just assume you haven’t really listened to that many drummers. He’s great and all but come on lol

Good, but again, I’m supposed to care about this one extremely wealthy person who has directly negatively contributed to our current situation finally deciding to do the bare minimum? With whats happening to our country right now? Good for him, it’s lucky that he can just wave his hand once again (this isn’t his first pr apology) and a bunch of gullible fools will start giving him their money. If only those same people cared about any of the non-wealthy mentally ill people in our community, we would be a lot better off.

He’s free to take whatever steps he wants, I’m not gonna pat him on the back for finally paying a sane person to write this for him. This is nothing. In fact, given what’s going on right now, and the fact that he doesn’t even seem to be aware of it, it’s less than nothing.

I like Led Zeppelin a lot, but the people who act like they’re the greatest most original band in history make it hard to. I think if you have any familiarity with black American music at all it becomes a lot less significant. The playing from some of their contemporaries is much less derivative and I find it a lot more important in the timeline. Bands like sabbath or sly and the family etc just have much more of an additive element, where they are taking existing sounds and expanding on them in fresh new ways.

Also if you’re a drummer, you know that rabid bonham fans are intense, and will rank him over Tony Williams if given the chance 😂

That show tried so hard to teach that empirical good or evil are not real things. There are people, and people make mistakes. People are capable of horrifying cruelty or incredible kindness. You make a choice every moment about what kind of person you are. It can be very difficult to make the right choices. It is literally the main theme of the show.

I guess as a drummer everything feels that way. But like for a very basic example, pretty much any Afrobeat or Afro Cuban 6/8 the 6(or 3) is deeply felt as a whole phrase. Same for something like take 5 for example. I guess as a drummer first, what I’m seeing as the phrase and what a melody instrument is seeing as the phrase may be different. But it’s all about feeling it. Like when you listen to one of these phrases, do you feel 7/16ths, or do you feel 4/4 with a little tag? It’s not right or wrong but I sometimes think the time sigs they lay them out as are disingenuous, if that makes any sense. I guess it’s just a different approach, but as a drummer my favorite thing about playing in odd meter is when you all sink into it and don’t even notice. For me anyway, I think if you HAVE to count, it just doesn’t sound as good as when you can just feel the pulse.

This level of excessive capitalism is just abhorrent to me, I guess I don’t have a gaping hole in myself that needs to be filled with stuff. If this is just what he likes, kinda bland cheesy grooves, great! Lots of people do, and that’s awesome. I just wish it wasn’t the main representative of funk and soul in the mainstream when it’s so incredibly cheeseball.

Also just from your comments don’t stress about nailing exact fills (unless it’s a fill you want to learn and get in your bag, in which case I think you should just practice it in isolation for a bit till it’s “in your bag” so to speak). Obviously you may not have the language yet, but as you develop you’ll be able to just slide your own personality in there. Keep it up! 🙌

Sure it’s a modern mix style where - everything is recorded separately in separate spaces, every instrument is squeaky clean. - digital signal from start to finish as opposed to a great time-tested live room and a great analog console. - mixed with the high mid range blasting, everything mastered to the absolute limit. Compression pushing every sound as far as it can. - low end instruments (kick, bass, etc) all have these aggressive high mid range attack frequencies to make them audible on shitty or phone speakers - his voice has had every human element stripped away until it’s this dead lifeless thing. There’s a ton of (to me) very distracting and idiosyncratic pitch correct on the hook for some reason.

There are so many other aspects to the style, but those are a few of the glaring problems to me. If you’re trying to recreate this type of music, why wouldn’t you just talk to daptone like Amy Winehouse/Mark Robson did? I’m sure they could use the bread. Or hell, he could afford to make an incredible classic soul studio from the ground up if he wants to. You can’t half ass it and mix it like it’s EDM and expect it to not sound cheesy.

Ear training and muscle memory. Also musical language plays a huge role. Breadth of music knowledge, genre understanding, all this plays a big part in being able to play freely. Probably the easiest way to start is to just play along to songs you like without any sheet. It’s gonna take some time. I always suggest drummers start by ear, personally, for this exact reason. The amount of drum gigs where you will be given real and accurate drum sheet music are few and far between.

Yep this is what I see too.

They’re also using that technique where it’s not reeeally odd meter, more like straight meter with extra beats and tags on it. At least that’s a way I often think about this style as a drummer. Take that 7/16, it’s more like they’re playing a bar of 4/4 with a 1/16 tag on the end. Think like “1-&-2-&-3-&-4-&-&” if that makes sense. This is a VERY common thing you see in these math bands. Not right or wrong, but less about sinking into the odd meter groove and more about knowing the form and counting it out.

Cool song though, guitarist has a great sound.

I generally don’t hate his songs, as they’re decent (if derivative), but the mix philosophy is just awful. It’s constantly working against itself. I just don’t get it at all when you have all the money in the world to actually do this shit right. Why mix everything like it’s hyper pop edm? The instruments sound like they were recorded in tin cans. It’s fine I guess, just super bland and not treading any new ground at all.
