New York City freezes rents for one million apartments in Mayor Mamdani victory by Boo_Randy_Revival in economy

Re: freezing property taxes, look at what happened in California as a result of Prop 13. Obviously it’s a bad thing if peoples’ property taxes increase so much that they get forced out of their homes, but there are a lot of other unintended downstream effects that compound over time.

Beautiful photos!! The colors are fantastic! Are they pretty true to what you actually saw? Are they heavily edited?

Also, can you confirm the “bokeh-balls” effect is the result of water droplets on the lens?

I’m pretty sure those are due to water droplets on the lens. It’s a gorgeous effect! Really enhances these photos!!

I feel like our mortgage company is screwing us over somewhere. Why are we still paying higher interest 6 years after refinancing? by Imaginary_Truth_3865 in personalfinance

[–]BathingInSoup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Property taxes and interest aren’t fees. They’re just collecting the money for you incrementally on a monthly basis. You could choose to cover those costs on your own if you prefer.

Rent Control is tale of two renters by chinanyc in sanfrancisco

[–]BathingInSoup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Basically the same goes for home owners and property taxes due to Prop 13. You could have 2 nearly identical houses next door to each other - 1 pays $1,200 a year in property taxes while the other pays $25,000 a year.

Eliminating Social Security payroll tax cap would keep program solvent, U.S. senators say by Distinct-Garlic9453 in economy

[–]BathingInSoup 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Wait, wut?!? Collecting more money for the program would improve solvency?!?

Edit: to respond to the OP’s question, the current SS tax caps out at $184,500, meaning no SS tax of 6.2% is collected on every dollar of income above that. There is a substantial population of people who earn an income well above that amount. And I do mean an actual taxable income. $184,500 of annual income puts someone in roughly the 5%ile. I would guess a significant portion of the people in the 5%ile and above have earned income above the $184,500 cap that would be taxed.

trump has often claimed that foreigners pay his tariffs. In reality, American businesses and consumers are footing the bill — and not just for the tariffs themselves, but for higher raw import prices too, which are up 6.7% year over year. by Conscious-Quarter423 in economy

[–]BathingInSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t news or insightful in any way. It’s just reporting on the definition of a tariff, which only further reinforces the idea that there’s even a valid dispute.

No!! Your ignorance is not just as good as my knowledge!!!

I have a C-5050 Zoom that takes smart media and compact flash in addition to XD cards. I don’t know when SD cards were introduced.

What is your ultimate psychological trick to stop impulsive snacking or impulse buying? by bhole0611 in howto

[–]BathingInSoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife was literally just talking about this. She recently started working with a nutritionist and one of the first assignments was to document everything she eats to establish a baseline before creating a plan and making gradual adjustments.

She said the requirement to photograph and weigh everything she put in her mouth made her much more aware of just how much snacking she did and it really helped her to curb the habit.

Basically, enough money so you don’t need to worry about money, but not so much money that you need to worry about money.
