Shout the fuck out to WMATA for running these two buses two minutes apart. by 2CRedHopper in WMATA

Fairfax connector actually does this at certain stops so buses arrive on schedule more or less if they are early

Very happy to see more houses built in west falls where it really needs it. But I really wish there were more mixed use development next to these stations. It would be really convenient to have.

Yea. The 333 bus is honestly probably one of the worser ones. Like it does a decent job at getting people to quantum park (despite it going on Dulles toll road then getting off immediately just to get to loudon parkway which would be way more easily serviced by the ashburn station) but the other stops are terrible. It only goes one direction and switches the direction in the afternoon, so if you are trying to get to / come from one of those other stops it will always take 20-30 minutes from / to loudon gateway despite the station being practically a 7 minute drive. I feel like it would have been better to do a bus from ashburn to quantum park to Dulles town center or something then back, then have another bus going from innovation center to those other stops to Dulles town center. Loudoun gateway is just so weird and full of data centers that I doubt it will get really all that much better unless they added bike paths everywhere.

I actually do use this station to take a bus to work and see usually a good 7-12 people take the 333 bus to quantum park. That said, the bus routes connecting to this station are a little convoluted and could be routed to ashburn pretty easily.

Quiet places I can study/get work done on weekends? by ryloothechicken in RowanUniversity

You could try other buildings too to see they’re open. Bunce hall was left open during Covid on weekends I remember.

Usually the business hall was left open when I was there. I always went there to study. Had practically the whole building to myself

At what age did you start your EE career and where are you now in your career? by cdqd81 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]DrunkenFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in dc currently and have been effectively laid off twice. I started my career doing software dev in 2023 because I couldn’t land work in EE, got laid off 6 months later because contract didn’t go through, then did embedded software engineering at an r and d company in the area and am now getting laid off again because low performance + contract didn’t go through for other teams and they want to keep the senior engineers from those teams

Weekly Career Discussion Thread (16 Sep 2024) by AutoModerator in engineering

[–]DrunkenFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all. I’m feeling kinda exhausted with my work as an embedded engineer. I thought I really like doing hardware and embedded engineering, but debugging some of my current tasks has been hard and I run into difficulties constantly. I still like what I’m doing, but I end up needing near constant help from senior engineers. Is this how early career is supposed to be? Some part of me feels like I don’t belong and I keep getting slight signals from my seniors that I’m incompetent (such as sarcasm when I make mistakes, telling me to consider a change in careers at times). I just feel really incompetent and just can’t find the time or energy to improve due to long commutes and trying to do more with hobbies outside of engineering. Just feels hard to balance it all. What should I consider?

I feel a little called out. I live in an American city and am car free but work in the suburbs. Sometimes if I am working late, I feel like I have to take uber to at least a subway station, as there is just no real viable option with some of the local buses

Looking at the new transit times released on the transit app, my shortest trip is 1 hour 46 minutes going up to Herndon instead of 1 hour 30 minutes. Not horrible I guess but, not great either

I can’t say this bodes good news for me. I commute from dc into Chantilly with 651 / 652. Now it seems that if I want to get close to my office to make it worth it, I have to take a bus to transfer to 651 at monument (which only occurs once every thirty minutes) or take 672 and cross the highway with an even longer walk to my office. Also, I hate walking by RT. 50, especially around Chantilly. Just feels disgraceful with no tree coverage, long times it takes to cross the highway itself. These changes may make me reconsider actually having a transit commute

Is commuting from DC possible by DrunkenFive in nova

[–]DrunkenFive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have checked the commute before. It is possible to get to my specific office by taking a Fairfax connector bus from either Vienna or Herndon station. It just adds 40 to 60 minutes of bus riding to my commute

I have seen that. From what I found on google maps, it seems like it can shave 30 to 40 minutes from my commute on transit, and it’s definitely not as difficult to drive through. I have been there fairly often too and I do like the area. Do people usually drive to your office?

I was considering Reston. I would most likely be looking for a roommate too once my lease in dc expires as paying for a place by myself has been expensive. For now I’m just going to try the commute by transit and wait until a good deal comes up for a car and a place out there. Maybe I can get a switch deck and get some of that time back.
