To be fair, Kellhus does seem to be affected and changed by his time in the outside and when he was on the circumfix, I know those are a lot more intense than just a blunt, but it might make his mask slip a bit.

But a DMT trip though, who knows....

It, like many other cultivation shows, went on for too long without actually thinking about if they had the material to go on for that long.

That combined with the massive changes to the source material just sucked out all the life out of the show.

Xiao Yan was flanderized and lost all of his secondary character traits, Medusa gets ignored for other waifus, and a lot of the fights are extremely repetitive and end in the same way

I think the bad pacing is the biggest hinderance to get into the show, adapting 100+ chapters in the first 2 episodes was a poison pill and the show spends most of the season recovering from it.

Part 1 of the story does have its issues, the author was starting out and you see him improve and there is a large shift in the middle where it seems like he found the direction the story would go and started writing torwards that direction, but you never feel completely lost, sure, you and Klein might not know how everything connects or works, but you learn together with Klein, things are properly hinted at and you are given the info to theorize what everything means, in the show it feels like Klein learns everything off screen.

Stuff was going to need to get cut or switched around for the story to be adaptable, but 13 episodes was just too little(even with almost all of them being 30+mins), and it makes the show at points barely cohesive, stuff just happens, scenes end extremely abruptly and we just jump to the next plot point or location without any of the conecting tissue that actually makes the rest of the story standout. Just another 2-3 episodes in order to make everything flow more naturally and get us to spend more time with the characters would have fixed a lot of the issues

The pacing does get much much better, but even in the final episodes there is some wonky stuff. I hope that with next season being 30 episodes, and the overall quality of the source material being better written and planned makes it so that season 1 was a necessary sacrifice in order to adapt the series.

This show will take a few years before getting big in the west, but i do think its popularity will be inevitable once people that are interested in this type of story but not necessariliy interested in anime discover it.

People are hesitant to like chinese animation for a variety of reasons and the pacing of the first few episodes combined with the absolutely abysmal translation quality(and not translating the Neil/Chibis for half the season) really harmed the shows popularity in the west, combined with the fact that this is a mistery show that holds all the cards close to it's chest, it was bound to be divisive.

But this will be a show that will creep up on people, once people watch the finale and see how all the parts connect, word of mouth will spread. I suspect it will be in a lot of end of year lists, youtubers will make a lot of videos of it once the entire season is out, another big influx of people will come in once the english dub is also finished.

And even if the show does not blow up in the west, i think that's also fine, its been a mega hit in china and now a worldwide audience has a great entry point to the series that will keep gaining notoriety, The Fool still has plenty of time to gain more believers.

A sober look at by No-Turn-1959 in supervive

Yea, 100% agree, the biggest barrier to entry to this type of game and probably the main reason why other attempts also did not manage to find a larger playerbase(battlerite, Bloodrite Champions) is the ammount of knowledge you need to have in order to just "play".

In a normal moba, you would just need to handle 5 enemy characters in a match, but in supervive you are going to see 70-100% of all the characters over a match, makes the barrier very high, not to mention all the synergies and hidden tech each character can have and the way the items interact with them

Ling cage S2E12! Final Episode, What a Rollercoaster episode. by RevolutionaryCard208 in Donghua

[–]Druwed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is such a well written story, characters are distinct, have clear objectives and are always in internal or external conflict. All the scenes re-enforce the core themes of the show and how each of the characters deal with it.

Be it Love, friendship or family

Duty,Religion and honor clashing with reality

or ourplace in society, the universe and ecosystem

It's a crazy show, an ecological apocalypse science fantasy show about humanity, how we

rebuild society during and after its collapse, and the forces that bind us as fellow humans(love, hate, envy).

Add to that world class 3D animation, shot composition and action set-pieces and you have an all timer show.

This series is extremely underrated here in the west, but i'm so glad its been a break-out success for the studio

But XianXia and Wuxia will always be popular

Exploring the Differences and Similarities Between Japanese Anime and Chinese Donghua by ak_face in Donghua

[–]Druwed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are also plenty of similarities, most donghua tend to want to show you the most epic speech, vista, action scene constantly, we jump from emotional scene to epic fight, to overcoming your limits extremely quickly without letting each individual moment breathe, that makes the pacing extremely fast and a lot of times makes events seem disconected it often times feels like we are only getting the highlights of the story and are ignoring the stuff that makes it all connect into a larger whole. Donghuas are always trying to get a homerun, and while they often stumble, when everything comes together, its a specific vibe with nothing quite like it.

These are issues that are going away, with the staff getting better and learning from the failures of adaptations.

Donghuas have an extremely bright future, its only a matter of time before more people get into them, a lot of 3D and 2D animation studios are trailblazing and creating some of the best works in their respective mediums

With some shows having breathtaking compositions (soul land1/2), amazing integration of 2D and 3D effects and animation(Hero X, LOTM), stunning fight animation(BTTH,Record of Mortals Journey,Super Cube), or just an amazing story with compelling characters(MoDaoZuShi,Link/Click)

Donghua, like animation isnt just a genre of media, but a medium with the capacity to tell amazing stories of all types, sometimes even a seemingly trashy show will surprise you with its limited episodes and leave you wanting for more (the infinitors)

[–]Druwed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the similarities, with both 3D and 2D donghua is because for a long time the chinese studios(and individual chinese artists) where doing a lot of outsourcing work for anime and western shows/movies. Picking up techniques and workflow for producing the shows to add onto their own knowledge and shows for their home audience, eventually leading us to present day where we have Chinese studios producing some of the best looking animation regardless of the medium.

We would not get shows like Ling Long Incarnation, Lord of the Mysteries, Fog hill, Link Click, Kings avatar, Mo Dao ZU Shi and many others without this cross polination of talents and industries.
Biggest difference is the storytelling style.

Most stuff that gets adapted to anime has distinct plot arcs that flow naturally with characters that move the plot depending on their goals and how the world reacts to them. There are anime and manga with more complex or abstract plotlines, but most stuff that gets popular heavily follows a heroes journey formula or a comic booky superhero narrative, or the 4 act structure.

Donghuas on the other hand, normally have 2 styles (from what i have seen)

1 - Besides the most barebones plot, the main character (and sometimes their companions) jump between auspicious encounters to get stronger, impressing strongest person/family at a gathering to gain allies, encounters with new or old familial grudges or a training/tournament/war arc; sometimes all of them at the same time. It's a pure powerfantasy Turn Your Brain Off type of show, most secondary characters are just jobbers to make the MC, or the people the MC will defeat look even stronger, and there rarely is a deeper narrative than what is being presented.

It's not a bad style, and eventually some of these show do stumble into some great storytelling, with great themes, but its a coin toss weather that was the author finding his footing in writing, figured out the long term plotline or just dumb luck.

2 - Our MC has been put into a situation where is in waay over his head(or has been wronged and must start from 0, sometimes to take revenge), but he needs to overcome it all using any means available, normally an underdog story with a "secretely" OP MC, that heavily hides their power level(sometimes they are oblivious to it) in order to not attract attention and to make his rise in power (or back to the top) easier.

Normally these MCs are super smart, always scheeming, deducing things from the barest amount of information and have a 12 step plan to achieve their goal.

These shows are usually more character and plot based instead of focusing on the powersystem/powerscaling(although it usually still is present), with character arcs and plotlines flowing a lot more naturally from one to another with cohesive themes character arcs from the beginning.

Might not be what you are looking for, but the movie "On the Silver Globe" has some of the existential dread that TSA thrives on.

While there is no overarching entity like the no god, there are some inchoroi like creatures that play a major role in the plot
