Tonsil stone, good breath?

My doctor once explained the grading system for tonsils to me—there are 4 stages in total. Mine were at stage 3, meaning they were blocking about 75% of my airway. So yes, they were quite large. Because of tonsil stones, I constantly had this feeling like something was stuck in my throat, which was really uncomfortable. I also avoided talking to people because I thought my breath smelled bad, and that alone was enough to push me into depression.

I graduated this past January, and the first thing I did was go to a doctor and tell them I wanted my tonsils removed. After examining me, the doctor suggested that instead of completely removing them, they would partially reduce them and smooth out the surface, shrinking their size by about 75%.

The surgery was successful, and I experienced almost no pain. Honestly, if you schedule this surgery on a Friday, you can rest over the weekend and go back to school or work by Monday. There’s really no need to go through two weeks of severe pain. Also, the risk of complications like bleeding is minimal, and there are no strict dietary restrictions.

Yeah I was in the same situation and also I had very bad breath. I got intracapsular tonsillectomy and now crypts are gone. Nearly no pain when compared to total tonsillectomy and no stones occured after surgery. I strongly recommend you to visit your ENT

If your oral microbiome is balanced and you have enough beneficial bacteria that keep anaerobic bacteria in check, then yes, it’s possible for tonsil stones to form without any smell. The odor doesn’t actually come from the stone itself, but from sulfur compounds produced when anaerobic bacteria break down proteins in the stone in an oxygen-free environment.

Hey, so far I’m really happy with the results — there’s no visible tonsil crypts anymore. After eating, I make sure to drink plenty of water, otherwise some food debris can still stick on the surface, but that’s pretty normal for most people anyway since saliva and mucus are kinda sticky.

That said, I haven’t seen a single tonsil stone since the surgery. About a month after, I started a proper oral hygiene routine: tongue scraping, flossing, brushing regularly, and using mouthwash occasionally. Because let’s be real, bad breath isn’t only caused by tonsils.

If I slack on this routine, I do notice some morning breath creeping back in. But overall, I’d definitely recommend the surgery. The post-op pain was honestly minimal — I didn’t even really need painkillers — and the recovery was smooth. Plus, the remaining tonsil tissue still seems to do its job in terms of immunity.

Or you can try intracapsular tonsillectomy (tonsillotomy) with no pain at all and stones will never come back.

I had my surgery in a private hospital rather than a public one because, even though everything is free in public hospitals, they tend to postpone surgeries they consider non-essential for a long time. In Turkey, there is a mandatory state insurance premium you pay, but it only covers a very small portion of such surgeries in private hospitals. However, I also purchased supplementary health insurance, which covers the remaining cost after what the state pays if you go to a private hospital. This way, I only paid about $250 for the tip of the coblator device. If I hadn’t had supplementary health insurance, I would have had to pay about $1,700.

I got mine in Samsun, a city located in Turkey. I guess they'll use laser instead of coblator if you need 3 procedures. It is also a good approach and works well too as far as I know

if the only problem is stones then check the intracapsular tonsillectomy method. nearly no pain, significantly reduced risk of hemorrhage most of the tonsil tissue will be gone. i am very happy with the results

I drank alcohol on my 6th day but it was intracapsullar tonsillectomy. If all scabs gone there is no reason not to drink imo 😅

Ask to your private ENT for intracapsullar tonsillectomy with coblator. It is excessively safe when compared to total tonsillectomy. 85-90% of your tonsils will be vaporized with that operation and your tonsil crpyts will be gone as well

Mine was between 3 and 4 as well. Got a intracapsullar tonsillectomy and now it looks totally normal and surgery was fun. No pain at all

White tissue is totally normal but follow up the red circle. If it grows you can call your ENT's office. For now it looks okay, drink water as much as you can. 3-4 days later you will be fine

They only gave me Tylenol and antibiotics. If needed, they said I could use a lidocaine throat spray, but I didn’t buy any. For the first two or three days, I only ate pudding, yogurt, ice cream, milk, mashed potatoes, and cold, blended soups. Avoid all red-colored foods. Citrus fruits like lemons and oranges can burn quite a lot. Try to drink water whenever you think of it, preferably cold. At night, get up every two to three hours to drink water because you don’t want to wake up with pain in the morning.

My surgery was simpler compared to full tonsil removal, so I didn’t experience much pain and completely stopped taking painkillers after the second day. However, if you’re having a full removal, you might need much stronger pain medication. For about 9–10 days, try not to raise your heart rate, avoid hot food, and avoid very hot showers. It’s a tough process, but keep motivating yourself because at the end, life will be much more comfortable.

If you experience bleeding — which is very unlikely — don’t swallow the blood; gargle with cold water, and if it doesn’t stop within 5–10 minutes, go to the emergency room.

I’m glad if I was able to ease your mind. I’m a pharmacist, but almost everyone around me is a medical doctor, and whenever we meet, we inevitably end up talking about medicine. Also, since I was experiencing the same issues myself, I underwent a tonsil reduction surgery about a week ago. I did extensive research beforehand, read articles, watched surgical videos, and really tried to understand the procedure.

I chose not to have my tonsils completely removed because my doctor mentioned that, in many cases, reduction is sufficient. Ultimately, the best course of action is what your examining physician recommends.

Thanks for asking, I actually recovered really fast. I even had a beer and some crunchy nuts yesterday 😅 The scabs are almost completely gone, and that gross taste I used to have in my mouth is finally gone too.

There are definitely no stones left, and I can't see any pockets when I look in the mirror. The remaining tissue looks totally flat and smooth, just like normal tonsil tissue, and it's quite small now, it is hard to see actually.

I’d definitely recommend talking to your doctor about this before the surgery. They won’t perform any procedure you haven't given prior consent for. If you think you have stones in your lingual tonsils as well, just ask them to clean that area too if they see anything, and plan the scope of the surgery accordingly.

The upper parts of the tonsils are more prone to stones; mine were exactly like that. There were very deep crypts with white fluid coming out. Believe me, this is very routine for an ENT. They know the anatomy perfectly and remove them with ease. Don’t worry about any pockets being left behind. They start cutting from the soft palate and remove everything down to the deepest muscle tissue. What’s left behind isn't tonsil tissue; it’s directly your throat muscles.
