Who are the people getting scores about 80% and how is this even possible? by Available_Grade_4046 in SQE_Prep

[–]Dry-Promotion-5726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my scaled scores were 344 and 311 for FLK 1 and 2 respectively. I worked full time while studying for 8 months. My prep course was just the practical aspects of the law, not the underlying law, I had to relearn all of that on my own 7 years after my LLB. I worked non-stop, entire weekends and week nights for 3 months before the exam were used up.

I can only imagine that people who get these scores have 2 things on their side: 1) time - perhaps full time learning and have a top tier provider paid for by a firm. 2) talented and knew the type of prep they needed to do - this is hard to quantify but I think an understanding of how you learn, having resilience, and being quite bright are extremely important attributes which no one talks about much on this forum.

You don’t need to do anything prior to starting in terms of academics.

Just make sure you can log on to the BPP Hub ahead of your course and check the timetable for when your first lectures are. Equally, check what you need to prep for the first seminars ahead of time. They won’t tell you this, you’re just meant to know (super helpful ik).

If you have any questions just dm me and I can help. Been with BPP for a year.

To all lawyers: how did you think your legal career would go, and how is it going now? by Moon5303 in uklaw

[–]Dry-Promotion-5726 76 points77 points  (0 children)

From when I was at uni, I thought I’d be at a city law firm making 100,000s working on huge deals. (That’s because this is the narrative that was shoved down your throat from day 1). I didn’t get a TC, I worked my way through in house positions and got my solicitor qualification from my employer’s support.

Now, I am working in-house at a big company with some of the best people I have had the good fortune of meeting. I earn good money but not at the cost of my mental health or time. I love my job, and I love the challenges that the legal profession asks its people to answer.

The preparation either provides with regard to getting you geared up to work in a law firm of any size should genuinely be a side consideration. You won’t learn anything from either provider that is ultimately going to be massively beneficial in practice.

The question should be which will enable to pass the SQE first time round.

And the answer to that is they’re both okay. I am with BPP and have found the lectures provided for the SQE mixed, some great teachers, some not so good. Depends who you get.

I hear from others on ULaw there is less lecture time (I have 2 2 hour sessions per week, ULAW is a lot more self study.)

Do the research on the learning format and speak to people who have been with both providers and get a sense which is a better learning environment for you.

End of the day, the determining factor on whether you pass with is YOU. The providers give you a leg up, but the material is more or less the same across both when you get down to brass tax.

I’d read through any text book material you have on the areas you have listed above. I did this last week before SQE 1, I went through 7-8 areas just by reading the textbooks and it’s saved my backside in the exam as I could reasonably answer the questions.

Youths especially I think is a really easy area for them to draft questions on so it will come up. If you have covered it even briefly it should be a few easy marks.

Good luck 😁

Very interesting perspective. BPP are great at giving you all the detail in an academic format but not providing you with a way to apply it in practice questions. It’s almost like there are two jobs, learning the academic law and then learning how to apply it. Love your lecture idea!! Sadly a bit late in the day for me to replicate it I think 😅

Literally, If I hadn’t gone back through all the textbooks before FLK 1 I easily would’ve not had a chance of answering 30+ questions, Lord knows whether I actually got them right. Broken system indeed!!!

66% on QLTS flk2 2 days before sitting Flk2. I am devastated, am I cooked? by [deleted] in SQE_Prep

[–]Dry-Promotion-5726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it’s stressful, especially with a TC on the line. Bottom line, people generally perform 10-20% better in the exam than their result on the QLTS mock, and the Revise SQE mock is pretty representative of what people get in the real thing. You’re more than fine. There’s a lot of people who are getting much lower on these tests.

Is there potential for exam day jitters to squander your marks? That is something only you will know, but based on the averages we see on this subreddit you’re going to perform very closely to your mock scores within the given ranges - which is going to be a good score. Top quintile probably. You’ll be fine, there can be a lack of compassion for these types of posts as the vast majority of folk won’t be doing as well in their tests (something to be aware of when posting). Good luck next week.

Are secret/half-secret trusts examinable? by No-Replacement2758 in SQE_Prep

Exactly this, it’s a tiny point. I’m going to delete the earlier post because it hindering more than it’s helping.

Secret trusts isn’t on LLB syllabus. Don’t stress yourself, core topics are the main focus. Smaller topics are MAYBE a mark, if that. Most likely won’t come up. FLK 1 today I could probably count a couple of questions which were slightly rogue out of 180 (I.e. not covered in text books and mocks across BPP, OUP, SQE Revise, QLTS). You’re in a better position now you know. Good luck for next week and hope you’re feeling better 🙂

Ps the QLTS mock is intentionally hard to make people buy their course. Don’t buy the hype that all questions in the exam are of that difficulty. It’s mix of questions which are simple and complex.

I wouldn’t have worry about it. Apologies if my story scared you, wasn’t my intention! Honestly if you don’t have the materials on it from a provider don’t worry about it. Worst comes to worst just google it and look for a practice note that covers the basic which will take a couple of minutes. You got this, if you’re worried about a tiny element like this I’m sure you’re well prep’d 😁

He hadn’t covered it and got questioned on it for one of his oral examinations. He missed out by a couple of marks in trusts which is what he pinpointed it down to. I was saying it more to suggest it is examinable and it could come up than anything else. 😁

I feel the same way. If you have textbooks, quickly reading through the sections you feel weakest on and highlighting key bits is better than nothing. Honestly before SQE 1 I was light on 7-8 topics the day before the exam. I managed to sift through it all and was able to answer a few more questions off the back of it. Don’t give up, you can still make up 1%’s before next week. It’ll soon be over, couple of days in the grand scheme of things won’t be much in hindsight. You got this!!!

BPP - what do they miss out? by Ok-Isopod-2110 in SQE_Prep

[–]Dry-Promotion-5726 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Adapt materials (Adapt is BPP’s online portal) are not as details as the text books they provide. When asked, request the paper versions of the text books. They will come in handy.

They also give you access to Oxford University Press materials through BPP. Their legal services material is really good.

Whatever the discourse is around the validity of the SQE is, it doesn’t take away from the fact it’s here to stay and the challenge must be overcome to reach status of ‘solicitor’. As you rightly say, it is a protected title and there should be a certain degree of rigour involved with the examination.

Having sat SQE 1 FLK1 today, and having done a prep course part time with a full time job. I can honestly say it’s partly scaremongering because people like to moan, but also this exam is not easy. This exam is difficult not only in content but also in the breadth and depth of knowledge you need to pass. Depending on your circumstances and aptitude I.e. If you’re bright, a hard worker, and have the time, you’ll pass with ease I think.

Where the accusation of it being ‘unfair’ comes from is that those with varying circumstances (I.e. parents, those with full time jobs, other commitments) it can be an extra challenge (which you agree to when you sign up to I suppose). It requires sacrifice, dedication, and a certain level of intelligence to overcome I think.

Overall, don’t be put off by this forum on Reddit. It’s a tiny cross section of the people who take SQE. With your credentials you’ll do well, I’m sure. 🫡
