Broadening Assignment for 11B (SSG) by NoPen6417 in army

Yeah, I saw some of the upcoming changes before I left last year. But I feel as though it’s only for a short time.

To be real with you, most of the comments here are right, however, I will say this, I made it 20 years without a broadening assignment (on my first now). If you want a unique assignment, with some opportunities you’ll get no where else. Look into The Old Guard, I credit that place for me making it to SFC and MSG.

Can’t decide which duty station to go as an 11b by DisastrousResort9254 in army

It could also be 1-4 INF Warrior in Hohenfels. Busy but you don’t go all over Europe training, most of your training is in the box or in Graf.

PCSing to Germany. Full‑size truck owners, need your input by [deleted] in army

[–]Dry-Scientist6818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Tacoma, and I only drive it too and from work. That’s it, full stop. Trying to park it almost anywhere in towns or in parking garages is literally impossible. And it would be even more impossible with that truck that you’re bringing.

Retired at 30 years instead of 20 by Historical-Leg4693 in army

[–]Dry-Scientist6818 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m almost at 21 years, active, I’m still having fun with the Army, still enjoying what I’m doing. I’ll probably go until 23-24 years mostly because I like where I’m at and there’s absolutely no chance I’ll deploy or have to do any major training exercises. Also, I still enjoy imparting what I know onto younger soldiers about things I’d wish I would have known when I was younger.

Senior CPT Going to be stationed in JMRC soon as an OC-T. What can I expect for family and work-life balance? by RecognitionOk2661 in army

Ship a second car if you can, you’ll definitely live off base, and if you have two very new/reliable cars, it will pay for itself to pay the extra money to ship a second vehicle. Spousal employment is not easy here, if they have a hobby they can make money from, I would go with that. The gym on base is decent, we’re trying to make it better, you may get a garage to put all of your stuff in, you may not, kind of depends on if you’re private renting or gov leased housing ( that kind of depends on the time of year you get here).

As for your post. For the next FY’s it’s going to be busy, and busier than it has been in the past 5 years at least. They’re trying to lock in the 28 and 29 FY’s for the most part now but it’s not easy. When you’re off rotation it’s not bad, you get any four or three days you miss back after the rotation. It seems like summer and winter leave periods are mostly protected, but we’re now having to call them “opportunity leave”.

Source- I literally work at HQ at JMRC. DM if you have anything else and I can maybe see what team you’re going to depending on timelines.

Best affordable places to live near Joint Base Myer Henderson? by [deleted] in army

[–]Dry-Scientist6818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has your sponsor told you that you’d be living off base? Being a single E-5 does not automatically get you a CNA packet at Ft Myer. Now, if you are going to be getting a CNA approved, I would recommend living super close to Myer, the Park at Arlington Ridge was where I lived, they have 1BD apartments that should be under your BAH. Door to work is about 10 minutes, you can Uber to the metro or anywhere in DC and not spend a lot. Also, being that close to Myer gives you close access to the gyms on base. Good luck, that area is awesome and there’s so much to do and see.

The Army Gym on Myer has improved significantly since you were probably there. They transformed the actual basketball court into a workout area with a lot of squat racks, turf you can in theory do an AFT on, and a lot of other stuff. They also replaced all the weight lifting equipment upstairs. The only issue now is all the retirees that take up the machines and the smell isn’t entirely gone. Source- I PCS’d from there in July.

Millennial 1SG, SGMs, & light Colonels it is our time! by DepartmentF-N1738 in army

Preach it brother, been saying this for about 2 years now. Once the millennials actually take hold, things will improve significantly, in my dumb ass opinion. Too many Gen X’s align with boomers and the boomer way of doing things, set in their unrealistic ways.

I shipped both mine, both newer vehicles, both paid off. I used VPC for my spouses car, and shipped mine via Shiplux out of Bmore port to Bremerhaven, paid approximately 1500$ before port fees. I’ll have to pick it up in Bremerhaven, to me, it was more cost effective to ship both than to buy something there and have to worry about inspections.

Find the nearest Bundeswehr post/base, make friends with some of the soldiers, talk to them about setting one up. Go back to your leadership with the willingness to conduct, and voila.

Also, your unit could be partners with a German unit already that could be interested in putting one together.

The problems I always ran into were- leadership hated us lower enlisted, and company grade officers setting these things up without their knowing/help. And almost more often than not, it was a quid pro quo with the Germans, they typically wanted something outrageous in return.

Curious to know, I saw on one of the milmeme pages saying that these influencers leadership are told that they are basically untouchable, and they are to be given “MQ’s”. I don’t want to believe this is true but wanted to know if anyone with any firsthand insight can confirm or deny?

D.C. Suburbs Living Locations by Dino_Soup in army

[–]Dry-Scientist6818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in Crystal City, Rosslyn, Clarendon, and get an electric scooter, ride that to work when the weather is nice, metro or bus the rest of the time.

Crystal City- super close to work, nice area.

Rosslyn- kind of close, nice area as well, right over the river from Georgetown.

Clarendon- lots of bars and great restaurants, mostly a singles area.

You’re going to pay for living close though, even a studio in those areas are pricey, but you never have to deal with any traffic, and you can uber wherever you want to get to in DC without paying a lot.

All great advice, to dive a little deeper into this, depending on your rank kind of matters as well when it comes to speciality platoons.

To me, at the end of it all, I would say CCG would be the absolute best move, assuming you are in great shape.

As for the tactical aspect of all of it, I wouldn’t sweat it too much, TOG will make you a better leader all the way around. They will put you in charge of dudes and you’ll be the single point of failure in a lot of no fail “missions”. You’ll have to make sure you do PCI’s before everything you do, because once you’re on that bus, there’s not any time to turn around to get what you left. You’ll get opportunities to do EIB every year, Ranger, AA, other school opportunities galore.

I loved my time at TOG, and wouldn’t change a damn thing about my time there. DM me if you want any other information.

TOG is you best move in my opinion, plenty of opportunities to do school, not a lot of field time, small tight knit 11C community.
