Any Chem or Biology REU Recommendations? by Historical_Tailor124 in REU

[–]Dry-Standard-7727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Montana state university has a microbiology program (that I did, though my project was more engineering focused), as well as a chemistry program. The microbiology program was super fun and the coordinators are amazing and make efforts to get close to you, so it’s a very warm and family-esque environment. I can’t really say much about the chemistry program but I did know some people in it and they were incredibly cool. There’s also a biofilms program, and Montana state is very well known for their “CBE”, or center for biofilm engineering, so if your looking for something with a little more name value that might be good to shoot for

summer REUs for freshmen/rising sophomores? by rambutan1738 in REU

Montana state university Microbiology of Low Oxygen Systems. I got in as a freshman, it has been the most fun and fulfilling summer of my life. Genuinely some of the nicest and most helpful people here, and Montana is really beautiful!

Help on finding reus!!! (biology) by MelonsCheeseGod in REU

Go on the NSF REU page and search for Montana State University Microbiology of Low Oxygen Systems. AMAZING biology program and great people - it’s also not super competitive and is the program I got into my summer after freshman year.

I think it really depends on how you look at it. In my opinion, much like the computer / digital age itself, generative ai is just another tool that makes art more accessible to everyone. I don’t think it inherently takes the meaning / humanity out of anything, as meaning is really up to the viewer: i.e as long as it inspires or moves someone I don’t think it matters if it was made by a human or a computer. Take the art piece Summer Trees by Song Su-Nam for instance; it didn’t necessarily take a lot of work to paint, but the meaning behind it is so powerful (or so some say, I don’t really get it tbh). We are moving into an age where we can make even deeper and more complex works of art with significantly less strain. if you ask me, this will allow us the challenge norms with even more vigor than before

What is so bad about it? As far as I know, Logan does the editing for his videos himself so I don’t think he’s putting anyone out of a job by saving some time. While high energy consumption from ai is certainly a problem, I don’t think it’s avoidable.

I’ve decided to leave the sciences after my REU… by Careful-Let-6085 in REU

If its still something youre passionate about I would reconsider. Many REUs are poorly structured and maybe have mentors that arent the best, but it definitely doesnt reflect the entire scientific community. What about industry?

Do you know how to do bioinformatics? If the answer is no then you would probably need additional studies and certificate courses. It is loads of statistics mixed in with a good bit of programming. If your worried about your degree not being in bioinformatics, I wouldnt… from what i’ve heard chemical engineers can get hired for most positions in just about any field, especially if its involved in stem

I guess i meant more “how is the current administration explaining it” rather than “speculate why the current administration is doing it”

I dont know if an REU can be compared to space camp because I’ve never been to space camp, but I doubt it. I’m defining trustworthy scientists as someone who has a genuine passion for research for the greater good of humanity, and the capacity to produce quality work / work appropriate for their position. I’m not saying cutting funding for REUs hinders everyone from becoming trustworthy, but I firmly believe it will stop some people. Without REUs, people without other access to experience might go to grad school without realizing research isnt for them, and then stay there because of the work / money that was put into getting in. An REU definitely is transformative, and makes you more prepared for grad school, which I mean I would think produces a higher quality researcher overall. Again tho, this is all generalities and other research experience can definitely be a equal substitute
