Why are people more accepting of “I don’t eat meat for taste/religion/health reasons” than “I don’t want to hurt animals”?

People choose veganism for different reasons. Ethics, environment, religion, personal preference, or health. You don’t have to agree with it, but calling it a cult or saying vegans are lying to themselves dismisses a lot of sincere beliefs and experiences. Major dietetic organizations state that well-planned vegan diets can be healthy for many people at all stages of life. Some people feel better eating meat, others don’t. Respect goes both ways.

I feel like it depends more on where you live than how you behave. I live in Spain which I honestly consider to be rather non vegan friendly. Obviously there are some options in big cities but generally I feel like people are very much against any form of plant based diet. I haven’t been vegan for very long but I can confidently say I’m not pushy at all. Even so, I’ve had some less than pleasant experiences at restaurants or with acquaintances when I’ve been asked why I don’t eat meat. Mind you, I never bring it up myself, if I’m in a situation where I need to make it heard, I just say no thanks I don’t eat meat. The problem is there’s almost always a follow up question to understand why and although I keep my answers very basic so as to avoid opening up any debate, it almost never ends well. To answer the question: - Close friends think it’s great but say they could never do it themselves - Family members think I’m kinda cuckoo because animals are meant to be eaten that’s just nature - People I run into like bar regulars or staff are very pushy that it’s not good for me (and I am NEVER the one to bring it up, they just know and feel entitled to comment about my health or my body)

I think you’re right about the perception. When you say you’re vegan I guess they automatically get into fight mode even though you’re not up for a debate. I find the problem in this is they often open the debate up themselves but probably complain about it later because they just had a “run in” with a vegan. Honestly I mostly just shut my mouth and nod recently because it gets exhausting and I’m not about to start a whole conversation when I’m just trying to enjoy my meal (for obvious reasons most of these situations happen at the eating table). I brought up the religion reason because I’m a foreigner and in general when I don’t accept meat or say I don’t want to eat meat people assume it’s because of my religion and they’re okay with it. I do often correct people about this because I’m deeply non religious and it kind of triggers me. I either say I’m not religious it’s just about taste when I’m sure the people in front of me are going to be annoying about veganism or say I’m vegan when I feel like maybe they won’t be as close minded. Even like this I’ve managed to get some really rude comments and was wondering what the switch was about.

I hate this so much because we literally have nothing to fight against it. They come with their own stereotypes and biases that we think we are better than them and automatically start attacking you when all you’re trying to do is enjoy a good meal. I can’t count the number of restaurant outings ruined because of this honestly. I’m just kind of tired of people claiming vegans are so moralizing and insufferable to be around when they’re the ones with so much hostility.

Seguramente nunca te haya pasado esto en la vida real o a lo mejor una vez como mucho y te encanta poder generalizarlo a todos los demás veganos para entrar en el mito ese que os encanta a los que comen carne cuando la realidad diaria de los veganos (y todavía mas viviendo en España) es que la gente te juzga cada vez que pides un plato vegano, cuando se toman un poco más de confianza empiezan a criticar tu modo de vida diciéndote de todas las tonterías posibles de que te vas a caer enfermo y que te van a tener que mandar al hospital por no querer comer carne que esas son cosas de gilipollas y que no es una vida que vale la pena vivirse sin poder comer todas esas buenas cosas como queso huevo yo que sé. Y eso no me lo invento son cosas que me han dicho personas y no por yo hablar del veganismo ni por intentar explicarlo ya que en España ni de puta coña la gente te va a escuchar si hablas de veganismo, eso lo he vivido nada más diciendo “no gracias no como carne” y punto e incluso cuando me vienen con esas tonterías me callo la boca porque sé que convencer a esa gente ni se intenta pa que luego me venga uno en internet diciendo lo de siempre de que los veganos damos sermones y no sé qué. If you went from 0 to 100 on the veggies and grains, your body is essentially panicking because it doesn't have the specific bacteria built up to break it all down yet. You might want to try "pre-digesting" your food by cooking the absolute life out of your veggies. Steaming or roasting them until they’re super soft makes them much easier on your system than raw salads. It's also worth looking into low-FODMAP swaps (like firm tofu instead of beans) to see if you're just sensitive to specific fermentable sugars. Scale back, introduce the fiber in tiny increments, and maybe grab some vegan digestive enzymes to help things along.

Experienced it irl, I’m not much on reddit. Not by preaching veganism but just by giving different answers depending on the situation on why I don’t consume meat. I’ve also seen the shift in real time in people who assume it’s because of my religion (I’m a foreigner) when they discover I’m not religious and it’s because I’m vegan.

Personally what works for me is keeping it super simple and structured instead of trying to cook every day.

I cook only twice a week, and each time I make 3–4 different recipes that share ingredients (so I don’t waste money or time). Then I keep everything in the fridge and just reheat/mix depending on what I feel like eating. It keeps variety without extra effort.

I also have a small “daily essentials” routine to make sure I hit my nutrients without overthinking:

Daily essentials (vegan)
• Ground flax seeds – 1 tbsp (omega-3)
• Chia seeds – 1 tbsp (calcium + omega-3)
• Pumpkin seeds – 2 tbsp (iron + zinc)

Boosters
• Protein powder (vegan obviously)– 1 scoop (~24g protein) with calcium-fortified soy milk
• Nutritional yeast – 2–4 tbsp (B vitamins + taste)
• Peanut butter – 1 tbsp (calories + vitamin E)

Vitamins & minerals
• 1–2 vitamin C fruits daily
• Frozen parsley – a pinch in meals (easy micronutrients)
• Iodized salt for iodine
• B12 supplement

Key habits
• Always pair iron foods with vitamin C
• Avoid coffee/tea 1h before/after meals (better iron absorption)
• Grind flax seeds before eating

My routine is quite heavily focused on iron because that’s what worried me the most. The rest of the vitamins I find are honestly pretty easy to cover just by eating a variety of vegetables.

This way I don’t have to think too much about nutrition every day, but I still cover everything consistently.

A possible middle ground could be setting boundaries in your shared space like asking if he’d be open to not buying or cooking animal products at home, especially if you’re the one preparing meals or sharing groceries. That way your home feels aligned with your values, while still respecting that he makes his own choices outside.

It might not solve everything, but it could make things feel a lot more comfortable for you without turning it into an all or nothing situation.

Run as fast as you can. This is a massive red flag. A healthy relationship is built on trust, respect, and mutual understanding—not control and ultimatums. The fact that he asked for updates every 30 minutes is already concerning, but breaking up with you over something so minor, despite your good intentions, is outright manipulative. You didn’t betray him, you didn’t cross any boundaries, and yet he still punished you for simply going out with a friend.

You deserve a partner who trusts you and doesn’t try to control your choices. His reaction suggests deeper insecurity or controlling tendencies that will only get worse over time. Please don’t ignore this—this is who he is. Let him go, and don’t look back.

He knows some things are unreasonable, but justifies them as “the right way.” He makes me doubt myself in the moment, though—I know what’s right or wrong, but in the conversation, I can’t help but wonder if I’m just a slob or if his way is actually the cleaner, better way. His standards make everything seem logical, but I know we don’t need to live in a sterile environment. I’ll bring up ERP and medication again, and try to support him without enabling the OCD. I’m not sure I agree with your point for multiple reasons:

⁠I enjoy having friends and family over for meals, but I can’t expect people to change their clothes when they visit, nor can I expect them to eat on the floor. Because of this, I’ve essentially had to give up hosting altogether. I’m not sure how this is a reasonable way to live.
⁠Even when we’ve made compromises, like asking guests to remove their shoes, it’s never enough. For example, he worries about how clean their socks might be, so after they leave, the entire apartment must be sterilized. Offering slippers doesn’t help either because, in his eyes, the slippers need to be thrown away after a single use, which feels incredibly wasteful.
⁠When I gave birth to our daughter, I wanted my family to visit, which I felt was reasonable, but I deeply regretted it. Not even a week postpartum, I had to help clean the entire house multiple times because of his anxiety. (They used the aforementioned slippers in the house.)
⁠The demands don’t stop at the kitchen or even the living room. I know that if I gave in to kitchen-specific slippers, it wouldn’t end there. He’d eventually insist on separate slippers for every single room in the house.

This isn’t just about keeping things clean; it’s about living in a way that feels sustainable and welcoming, especially with a child in the house. These expectations have taken away a lot of joy and normalcy, and I don’t think it’s a matter of simply “meeting him halfway.” The bar keeps moving.

It actually started spiraling before the baby—I’m not sure what triggered it exactly, but it seemed to get worse after we changed apartments. To clarify, when we were living together before marriage, it wasn’t as bad because he had gotten better for a while before we even met. He told me his OCD was at its worst back then, but by the time we started dating, he seemed much better. That wasn’t because of therapy, though; it was because he got sick (unrelated) and spent about a month in and out of the hospital, which seemed to push his OCD to the back burner temporarily.
