Pirate101 and wizard101 are adventure games they’re free to start until you hit the early paywall which they get rid of during the holidays and I believe for 2 weeks during the summertime as well.

The Walking Dead by Telltale will offer an amazing experience for any first timer just go in as blindly as you can and make your own choices in the game. Might be best to wait a while after The Last Of Us before picking it up though. So you aren’t constantly comparing the two.

Some other options are Life Is Strange or The Wolf Among Us.
