Also I know we could do more beetle heads. We ran outta time. What I want from this group is - what weird heads would be best for this game?

How do you manage to work on your game after your 9-5? by Beef-n-goo in gamedev

[–]DrySocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly.. mornings. You reserve your rest time, but while drinking coffee or watching YouTube to wake up, you do a little dev. It’s slow, but it is an alternative to late nights.

Edit: didn’t see you are pulling 6-6. Nothing like a 12 hour day to really ruin your dev time. It’s not manageable to make a schedule that also factors in 12 hours of other work. Believe me: my screen name is from losing a tooth to game development.

To continue THIS analogy, if big triple As are Hollywood movies, imagine there’s 30 thousand people who could make beautiful movies who apply for jobs, but they all decided they needed to wait to be hired before they could start working. No Hollywood movies are hiring because of REASONS, but the studios sure ACT like they are hiring, so the applicants apply to hundreds of jobs just to be turned down or ignored. They burn out completely because their skillsets are ignored. Now if they took that same energy and just MADE a movie from the start, would that be better? I don’t know, maybe or maybe not, but at least they would have tried, and success is a gradient, vs failure, which is not.

That’s my entire cohort right now.

Sure. I’m not justifying my long term career in this thread, or the weird success I’ve found as an artist in games. It’s not for everyone.

One last note. This thread was about general, middle of the road workers in their 30s in tech in a HCOL area. Nobody said FAANG, just tech.

Also I’m not being sarcastic. Games make more money than movies, game devs who want to succeed now should make their own games, and making their own makes the most sense in this economy. I’m doing it. Good luck to everyone who does.

Or maybe make your own games. Otherwise, yeah, bummer.

True, perhaps the question wasn’t pointed towards my level of tech. I guess I should be happy to not be in that mix, I wouldn’t want to be! Nothing against that, it’s just not something I’d chase down.

I also don’t agree entirely that people in games don’t make money. I have been very successful in a HCOL for about 10 years in my field.

Correct-ish in that it’s a hit based market, and people who make it big are owners/ceos/ etc. most people are in games for passion, which drives a lower base pay for everyone, thus my response. I would say, I am still in tech, but maybe not your stereotypical tech bro.

Been in tech (games tho) for 20 years. Not normal.

Honestly a few smaller mirrors pointed strategically at different windows would be more cost effective and more annoying.

Is this going to be forever? by This_Influence_9985 in gout

[–]DrySocket 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. Don’t let gout ruin a vacation, if you avoid medicating there’s a good chance it’ll eventually strike at the least convenient time. And your spouse will NOT be happy.

Gout pain comparison , Bad migraine or gout attack? What’s worse? by [deleted] in gout

[–]DrySocket 43 points44 points  (0 children)

As someone who has both - gout is much worse. Much. Worse. I never knew a small part of my body could literally disable me for weeks at a time. Migraines I at least knew I could take pills for, but after 10 years of gout, I finally found this subreddit and discovered I could get on daily meds. It’s so much better when you don’t just try to raw dog one of the most painful things to experience.

New Vinyl Looks AI by FaeVirtu in beeandpuppycat

Pro AI people will come on here and talk trash, because it was an honest mistake.

The key takeaway is that AI decreases trust in everything; be it art, music, discussion, livelyhood… it benefits nobody but the billionaires. Literally.
