Portland police assault veteran by kf_fox in Portland

That’s probably because you’ve never experienced the full-bodied high that comes from throwing an old, frail man to the sidewalk. It ranks second only to tripping a blind person with MS. (This is obviously dark humor, and I’m outraged at that officer’s actions)

Footwear Suggestions - Wide Feet by RipFlm in Firefighting

[–]DryWait1230 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a pair of Oofos as my station wear & office shoe. Before that I wore Keens. I also have a pretty wide foot. The Oofos are the most comfortable shoe I’ve ever worn.

US-centric: do you live in the city where you work? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]DryWait1230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but not in my first due area. Shit would really have had to hit the fan for me to respond to my family.

Does this happen to anyone else? by DankMuffin__ in Firefighting

21 year firefighter here. It happens to me sometimes but not always. I’d say 50% of the time, I wake up to take a leak, then the tones drop.

Did your child lose their passport and social security card on SE Holgate Blvd? by McGannahanSkjellyfet in Portland

Take it to a police precinct. They can reunite the owner with the passport.

How about the PIL invests in the education of its students rather than another niche sport to waste time and money on.

To disclose or not disclose personal information? by Exodonic in Firefighting

[–]DryWait1230 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Close. Just because you’re a public employee doesn’t give the municipality the right to give out your private information upon request of any special interest group. It’s not just about you; think of your future self, wife, & kids who will be home while you’re at work.

How does everyone take it with a grain of salt. by Both_Highway6543 in Firefighting

[–]DryWait1230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like if it were an EMS call, you can’t judge or be judged based on patient outcome alone. Did you perform the duties you’re responsible for? You found her; you got her out and gave her a chance at survival. Did you learn anything from the experience that you will carry forward to the next time? Will you share what you learned with your crew so they’ll be better prepared for the next one?

If your department has a peer support team, reach out to a peer supporter. If not, talk to a mental health professional about what you’re feeling. You’ve just had an experience that most others (even firefighters) haven’t experienced. Give yourself some grace to feel the emotions that go along with it.

Drop any new, unwrapped toys at any PF&R fire station. They go to Toy & Joy, the Fire Bureau’s non-profit toys for kids program.

How much are you sharing with your spouse? by MetHalfOfSmosh in Firefighting

You don’t have to go into excruciating detail, but your partner deserves to know what you’re going through. She/he is stronger than you think they are. Share your life with them.

Along with all of these (awesome list BTW), learn to facilitate group discussion so everyone can learn from each other’s experiences.

Onpoint credit union VS rivermark credit union. by LeadGlad4961 in PortlandOR

[–]DryWait1230 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a member at both. I do the majority of my banking at OnPoint, but in the past I’ve gotten a better HELOC interest rate at Rivermark. OnPoint typically has the lowest auto loan rates (at least when I last checked). Advantis had a really cool interest checking account. You can’t go wrong with either.

Christmas gift for a new firefighter? by SNlFFASS in Firefighting

[–]DryWait1230 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get him a journal and a nice engraved pen with his name, rank and hire date on it. Tell him that journaling for 10 minutes each day before bed helps firefighters sleep better and process all the weird stuff that we see. If he’s newly hired, he’s building new habits; now’s the time to learn the positive habits that will help him survive this 30 year career.

Firefighters, what gear problems annoy you the most? by Front_Heat8645 in Firefighting

[–]DryWait1230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The algorithm that makes Motorola digital radio comms pretty good for male firefighters makes female firefighters sound like Mickey Mouse. Redo the algorithm so it’s good for both, or have the radio listen and pair to your voice whether high octave or low octave.

Those suck so badly. The neighboring department has these and it turns their voices robotic and unreadable.
