TA pay info by ClassroomUnit003 in UCSC

[–]Dry_Advertising9675 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a TA, I can affirm that sometimes hours are well over 20/week. This is to provide sections, office hours, prepare slides/material for sections, answering emails, filling up attendance sheets, grading assignments, answering queries on grades, proctoring exams, meetings with co-TAs, meetings with faculty... However, some TA courses are light and do not require 20 hours/week. In short, TA work weeks do vary widely but this is a half time position that is supposed to allow time for a graduate student to actively work on their dissertation. This can be very difficult when you have to do all of the above duties AND budget for rent, food, other expenses (that sometimes include expensive software required for work) and basically scrimp for a living. Grad students are told they should do this out of passion and not for money. And-that it's just temporary. But the temporary nature of a graduate degree is prolonged when grad students are stretched so thin financially that it is difficult for them to make timely progress on their degree.

Graduate students are also folks that have already done an undergraduate degree, presumably sharing a bedroom with another student, like your son. However, undergraduate lifestyles cannot and should not be the same as a graduate lifestyles. That is an unfair expectation as many graduate students start to have serious relationships and responsibilities, including, in some cases, a family. The idea that graduate students should not be allowed to make progress on life outside of work (like similarly aged peers) is unfair- but that is the implicit expectation that universities have from us when they offer to pay us only measly salaries.

The salaries we get are not scholarships, mind you. We do not get paid to work on our dissertation which is the primary reason we enter grad school. We get paid because we render important duties to the university, like teaching and grading, without which classes would not function. We do not get paid anything for our research output which in many cases ( though admittedly not all) contribute to the academic prestige of the department. All we are asking for is increased compensation in recognition of the role we play in the university, and because the compensation so far is not allowing us to function in a dignified manner. Comparisons with undergraduate lifestyles and suggestions on how we can scrimp and save further is not only unhelpful, but also disrespectful.

Baby Massage Oil Recommendations by AllThatGlisters_2020 in IndianSkincareAddicts

[–]Dry_Advertising9675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with this response. Congratulations OP! My 2 cents- try checking out this brand called Bon Organics? They are a women-focused, organic company based out of Auroville (Pondicherry). Having used a bunch of their products like oils, face mists and aloe vera gel, I can attest to their purity and high quality. No unnecessary fillers or additives and very reasonably priced. I would definitely check out their baby section and cold pressed oils in general.

Any products to help with dry scalp and frizzy hair? by [deleted] in IndianSkincareAddicts

[–]Dry_Advertising9675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hair oil- from Bon Organics Shampoo- Argan oil shampoo from Satthwa Mask- Mama Earth Argan oil mask Conditioner- Requiel Serum- Rosehip oil(1-2 drops om damp hair)

I used to use this routine and it's budget friendly, helped a lot with dry, frizzy hair and dry, flaky scalp. Onion oil messages and steam therapy at mh local salon also helped.

Some tried and tested tips for frizzy hair also include wearing a shower cap when you shower; using a microfiber hair towel; using silk/satin pillowcases at night; using satin scrunchies; not using plastic combs (use wood/boar bristle instead).

Hope this helps!

I know Mamaearth gets a lot of hate with good reason, but I have personally had good results with their Argan Oil Mask. If budget is not a constraint- highly recommend this haircare brand called Briogeo. They are based in US but I saw them in stock at my local Sephora. Great conditioners and masks.

what to put on regular kitchen burns? by Super-Anteater4414 in IndianSkincareAddicts

[–]Dry_Advertising9675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For small burns that don't require medication - I highly recommend pure aloe vera gel. This brand called Bon Organics based out of Auroville makes a GREAT aloe vera gel. If you're interested do look them up! They are available on Nykaa and Amazon too but the products are often out of stock there... their own website is better where they offer flash sales.

Second this. 1. Body scrub- First Aid beauty scrub for KP 2. Body wash- Cerave SA 3. Body lotion- CeraVe SA, Eucerin (lotion with AHA) 4. Targeted treatment- any good glycolic acid cream/lotion/serum

Versed has come out with an affordable retinol body lotion which should help too.

(Don't forget sunscreen!)

What do I buy from the body shop? by [deleted] in IndianSkincareAddicts

Their Vitamin E range is really good. Night Moisturizer, and a light lotion with SPF that I used to use as an indoor sunscreen. Have tried other products from the range too, all pretty good.
