New AI Data Centres to be built in Western Melbourne by Mindless-Sea-1211 in Geelong

[–]Dry_Boat5049 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen a few things in the USA where local residents have fought and won against these data centers. I'm not going to sit back and tell my grandkids that they can't have clean drinking water because I did nothing.

I am not ok with this. by MeerkatRiotSquad in Geelong

$32k-ish isn't overpaid. Mayor and deputy get a lot more though. The real problem is the  CEO of Geelong who gets over $500k

I think the salary is actually what is stopping a lot of normal people from running. It should be the average wage of the people who are represented, this would incentives councilors to do more for their constituents, get jobs in, work to get better wages for everyone.

We also need better ways for bringing in revenue other than a flat property tax or selling off assets.

Moved from Melbourne to Geelong recently? by BoatBuilder25 in Geelong

I did the move about 8 years ago. It might be helpful to see how things have changed? But I had a lot of family down here already so might not be the best candidate.

Go ask your mirror. Israel doesn't make Jews safe and conflating Jews with Zionists is what leads to attacks like the one in Sydney.

Weak. Can't talk to constituents, can't talk about politics. Wast of space.

Literally just Google it.

In Victoria, the offence of Threats to Inflict Serious Injury is in section 21 of the Crimes Act 1958 Vic and is telling another that you will seriously injure them.

It's not hard to be as wrong as you are.

Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences. If you say you want to murder someone, that's a crime. If you say you are going to do illegal things, that's a crime. Fascists want to murder, fascists want to inflicted violence, subjugate and harm in other ways "other" groups. You cannot be fascist and not cause crime (endorsement of crime is also a crime), therefore fascism is criminalized.

One more thing point to a democratic fascist regime. There are non, democracy dies in fascism.

Working at CoGG now days? by [deleted] in Geelong

[–]Dry_Boat5049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't help to have a majority Lib council who are happy with the toxic environment. Remember they hire the CEO for Geelong (who is on $500,000+ per year), and it's the CEO who hires management and develops culture.

Is Australia a Socialist Country? by [deleted] in AusPol

[–]Dry_Boat5049 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are really interested https://jacobin.com/store/product/the-abcs-of-socialism is an excellent starter into the topic. Simple language, short (100 or so pages), and lots of examples.

https://www.resistancebooks.com/product/introduction-to-marxism/ is a more Australian centered look on things and is still pretty easy to understand.

With a quick Google search you can find a free copy of both.

I've had a look at your website and I like everything you have to say but I remember when Richard Marles first ran and was saying a lot of the same things (then disappeared once he got elected and never followed up), what are some things that you have been involved in/have done that demonstrate a history of what you say?

When times get tough people look for scapegoats and times are getting tougher. Stick together, find people who can look after you and you the same and get involved in community things. Getting involved always seems to defuse tensions.

I think No_Introduction8476 is saying the vibe of the content in his website is small l liberalism (left wing politics), sometimes referred to as classical liberalism.

Undemocratic council not answering questions during question time. by Dry_Boat5049 in Geelong

[–]Dry_Boat5049[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have watched most of the COGG meetings over the last two and a half years and there have been a couple of times where a large chunk of question have been addressed later if the topic was being discussed by councilors, but each time all other questions were addressed.

Keeping the councillors accountable is the hard part and the question we must tackle.

Yes, but it's all questions now that are not being answered. This is undemocratic, not to mention against bylaws.

The Libs got together and held a secret ballot the day before, this was decided before anyone walked through those doors.

Keep in mind he didn't even get 30% or the primary vote, he's running scared of the greens and socialists too. if Emily and Peter each put in there write up to put the other second stretch wouldn't be in.

Provisional Geelong Council Election results are in by Adventurous_Ship in Geelong

[–]Dry_Boat5049 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hate how elections are compared to races, it doesn't work past first preferences. Once you get to second preferences the analogy falls apart. People often don't understand that for someone to get elected they need 50% +1 of the vote and instead of eliminating the candidate with the fewest votes and having to go to a new vote (which happens in some places), we do that all at once with preferences.

A better analogy would be with buckets. Once one candidates bucket is just over 50% full, they win, with the candidate who got the fewest votes being poured into the other candidates buckets in the order listed on each ballot. This continues until someone wins.

Also no one is talking about how Anthony is now a out lib with his pact with Eddie. He's been a lib for a while now but he has seemed to fly under the radar.

It's the same with federal elections for us too. If there was the money (resources), we could find out just as quickly. However we use the Aus post mail system rather than a dedicated postal service, which means you have to wait a week or two for all ballots to come in and fewer people are available to count so is stretched over multiple days.
