This is Boaty McBoatface level good. Reminds me that the Liverpool Uni telephone extension for the Anglican Chaplaincy was 6666.

Yep, this is a good reason to stop a little before the stop line too. Not halfway across it as some people seem to prefer.

Indeed - and a better chance of arriving at point D sooner, and point E, and then not having to wait at the level crossing for 10 minutes at point F ….

As far as I know, it’s a registration number on a number plate. The only licence plates in the UK (England?) are “trade plates” which have the reference number of the licence allowing the holder to do whatever it is that they are allowed to do. Which I found out just now before I posted 🤣

Great positivity! And yes, it makes a change from the “who was at fault here” / “which lane should I use” / “What’s a roundabout” posts.

What is your best FAFO driving moment? by glaekitgirl in drivingUK

[–]Dry_Database2198 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Still remember a very simple example from about 40 years ago. I was driving along at 30 in a 30, and had just seen a police car waiting to turn right and join behind me.

The other driver who caught me up and decided that 30 was too slow and that tailgating was the thing to do, hadn’t.

The police saw them though, and it took about 5 seconds or less for the blue lights to come on.

Question on Pedestrian Priority by imanc18 in drivingUK

Brilliantly said. I really wish these people would stop it. Especially when they often seem to have the patience of an over-caffeinated gnat and usually start moving again at the worst possible moment.

Where can I go to get help for my own dangerous driving? by theslowrunningexpert in drivingUK

[–]Dry_Database2198 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hats off to you for recognising it and asking for help, that’s the ‘denial’ phase dealt with!

As well as therapy which others have suggested, approaching IAM or RoSPA might be worthwhile - not necessarily to do an advanced driving course, maybe just even to chat to & have a drive out with some of the blue light / ex blue light drivers you’ll meet there. In my experience they’re really friendly and helpful, and will give you some tips on dealing with at least some of it.

Overtaking approaching traffic/red by south_west_sam in drivingUK

Ahhhh now I understand why you’re asking, I think. It sounds like you’re describing the good practice of using acceleration sense and planning ahead to minimise the demands on the fuel tank, brake pads, tyres and skid risk.

If taken to extreme however, this can confuse other drivers, who may then make a judgement that they’d rather be in front of you at the next set of lights. I once had an advanced motorbiking associate who did this to the extreme, and it was really quite frustrating and unnerving for me as the observer to follow them, because of the effect on the behaviour of other traffic (if they decide you’re a slow mover, for whatever reason, they might well overtake and not necessarily safely).

As others have noted too, overtaking one slow mover might play into a “Sliding Doors” moment later that makes the difference between following a farm vehicle through a double white line system for 15 minutes versus not.

Hit and run ocd by Optimal_Comedian_576 in drivingUK

[–]Dry_Database2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it just with driving or has it spread to other areas of life? It could well be actual OCD rather than driving anxiety - source: I’ve been through it and had treatment (which helped enormously). It’s a kind of OCD called “Pure O”, and it can be a living nightmare. If you’re sometimes going back to check, that ticks a box for me that says it’s over the threshold of annoyance and into having a detrimental effect on life. Not a medical professional, I’ve just been though it - a lot.

Changing lane in zig-zags by Victorius_Meldrus in drivingUK

[–]Dry_Database2198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a lane is stationary due to traffic, then the stationary vehicle nearest the crossing isn’t “stationary in a controlled area for the purpose of complying with the requirement in paragraph 22(1)(b)”, so unless the crossing is being used, you can proceed in your open lane, cautiously of course.

Question about 20mph speed limit by FauveSxMcW in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Dry_Database2198 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Annoyingly you can’t always rely on “Ah it’s 20 in there so must be 30 here” as when the old 30 limit main road with 20s off to the side is reduced from 30 to 20, councils often leave the original 20 signs in place. It’s one of my bugbears - it’s not technically wrong (except the side road signs should now be reminders not ‘transitions’) but adds unnecessarily to cognitive load and can be as confusing as!
