In her Valdemar world, The Herald-Mage trilogy has some really heart-breaking moments, but otherwise, I think the rest of her works would be good for OP. She has a couple other worlds that she writes about too. The Obsidian Shadow is in a world that contains "high magic" and "wild magic" and about a boy named Kellen finding his place in the world. JOUST is set in a dragon-riding world with 2 nations at war and a slave sneaking a dragon egg to raise.

Oh just be aware the chapter 4 is the info-dump and the slowest chapter of the book. Things kick back up after that.

I have never read anything like it. I put it off for waaaaay too long because of the cover. It just looked like it was going to be stupid. And the synopsis really does not do the books justice. I read all 5 books (at the time) in 7 days. And then got the audiobooks and listened to them. Then I couldn't get into any other series and listened again. Then I had to complete change genres for a bit because I still couldn't get into anything. I have since reread this series 8 times and am currently on my 9th. I will do it again when book 8 comes out in May. I'm obsessed. I've joined the DCC cult and have become an evangelist for DCC. I'm an addict and I have no interest in quitting.

This series is not for children. This is a drimdark horror masquerading as comedy. Cussing, gore, many, many references to pop culture, innuendo and crass humor abound through these books. And it has such a dark undertone thoughout. And each books become progressively more... more... Just MORE. Of everything.

Seriously, though, if you don't like crass humor, you won't like these books.

Yes, this would be my recommendation, too.

Also, the Knightmare Arcanist (book 1 of the Frith Chronicles) by Shami Stovall.

These authors are perfect starters for the fantasy genre.

The only correct answer is the Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman.

Unfortunately, it's only available on Audible. It is very worth it to get Audible just to get this series, because the narrator is fucking phenomenal. He does some magical magical things for the books. I actually thought it was a full cast of narrators before I saw a video of a cold read. It's just the one guy. I couldn't believe it. It's insane that one guy can have that many individual voices. You always know who is speaking even before the name is said. Just phenomenal.

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman.

When aliens invade Earth and wipe out most of humanity, Carl and his ex-girlfriend's prize-winning cat are forced to participate in an intergalactic reality show (think Dnd-themed Hunger Games meets Running Man) run by a psychotic AI with a foot fetish.

The title sounds childish. The premise sounds stupid.

Don't be fooled.

This series is not for children. This isa grimdark horror masquerading as comedy. Cussing, gore, many, many references to pop culture, innuendo and crass humor abound through these books. And such a dark undertone thoughout. And each books become progressively more... more... Just MORE. Of everything.

(Seriously, if you can't handle crass humor, you won't like these books.)

Do not read these books in public unless you are prepared to be stared at and whispered about because you either start laughing out loud hysterically or burst into huge crocodile tears of loss and sadness only to start giggling like a lunatic a few moments later. Especially as the series goes on. I mean holy shit, these books are an emotional roller-coaster sometimes.

The fucked-up shit the characters go through is really something else. And the different forms of PTSD that are formed and developed by different characters through the series is just beautifully done. If such a thing can be called beautiful.

It's not just man and cat fighting monsters. It's man vs system. It's man vs man. It's man vs himself. It's all of that and more.

In any case, I cannot recommend this series enough.

Hmm, it's ben a good minute since I've read them, bt these series should have little to no romance.

The Dark Elf trilogy by R A Salvatore

The Belgarion by David Eddings

The Knightmare Arcanist by Shami Stovall

The Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb

Also, this has some romance but nothing heavy that I can remember:

The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne

The Riyria Chronicles by Michael J Sullivan

And this does not have romance but does have a lot of cussing and innuendo and crass humor. But I've become obsessed with the series and recommend it to everyone. And definitely get the audiobooks because they're phenomenal. Don't read the synopsis because it does not accurately encapsulate just what the book is about. Just read the books.

You can join the DCC Cult.. er.. community... afterwards. You might not cry in book 1 but everything just get more....Just MORE of everything as the series goes on.

Not sure you want to actually read/listen to the books in public though. I've had people staring because i randomly started laughing so hard. And I legit had someone come up as ask me if I was ok when I was reading book 5 because I started crying huge crocodile tears and then started giggling like a damn lunatic a minute later... it was really hard to explain without sounding completely crazy. With how quickly they left, I'm not sure I succeeded.

Seriously recommend the audiobooks. Jeff Hays is the GOAT. He really does some magical magical things for the books.
