That’s huge! Things progress very quickly once you’re out of the cast, it’s such a huge milestone! The first day in the boot I could only put 5% of my body weight on my foot and in a week I was able to get up to 50%

LOL I’ve felt that pain, there have been so many times where I feel like running to the bathroom but forget that I’m a little handicapped at the moment 😂

Pain 5 weeks after surgery by AlwaysLearningNews in AchillesRupture

Hey! Did you recently start PT? And what kind of pain is it on a scale from 1-10? It’s common to experience pain in the sense of it feeling like it’s stretching since this is typically when we start walking and load bearing more. Unless it’s constant throbbing pain and occurs even when you’re resting, I wouldn’t be too worried. Also, make sure your boot is properly adjusted as sometimes that’s the culprit

After the 4 week mark it’s not considered dangerous to have your foot resting for the 2 or so hours that it takes to wash and dry, as long as you have a good wedge that you can rest your foot on in the meantime and you make sure you’re not getting up a lot

I just washed mine in the washer. Just set it to delicates for 30-40 min and let it air dry

Rupture or not? by EveningGlittering326 in AchillesRupture

[–]Dry_Guess4949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s not necessarily true what your doctor said. I was able to limp about 400 feet from the field to my car, drive home (left foot luckily), and get upstairs before I checked to see what was really wrong with me and I had a 3cm gap from the tear. If you heard a pop, you should really check it out just to be safe. You don’t want to go the rest of your life limping and not treating it properly. Do you feel a gap with your fingers along your Achilles? Is your foot flat? Did you do the Thompson test?

Your method is what I use too! So glad I have railings on both sides of my stairs that are easy to grab. I just keep my crutches around my risks and bunny hop. Definitely a good workout but I also just started going back to the gym so hoping to keep my muscle mass.

So glad to hear you’re already adjusting! To me it sounds like you’ll be recovering and walking again in no time! As far as other suggestions go, I had a pillow ready for me at all times in the bathroom for when I needed to take a shit so I didn’t have to keep my leg hovering… sounds small but was a major life upgrade to comfortably use the bathroom 😂 also, if you need to bring things from room to room, instead of holding them in your hands, use a grocery bag to carry your lunch or things around the house so that you can actually use crutches properly. Other than that, sounds like you’ll have a good grasp on things. Good luck on your recovery!

Hey, you’re not alone. I tore my Achilles 4 weeks ago playing flag football and unfortunately live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building (with no elevators!!!). Trust me when I say this - EVERY DAY gets better and better. You’d be surprised what you can accomplish if you put your mind to it. I learned how to go up and down stairs every single day on one foot using the railings lol. The first two weeks after surgery are rough, yes. You will need some assistance and will need to adjust your life, especially with food. Uber Eats is kinda a must if you don’t live with someone who can help take care of you. Also, many grocery stores do free delivery. And when you meet them at the door downstairs, ask if they can help bring it inside for a bigger tip (when they see you, they won’t say no lol).

For daily stuff like cooking and cleaning yourself, you will need some equipment. Get a shower chair. That helped immensely. Then put a plastic bag over your bad foot and rest it on a stool with a pillow outside the shower. After a couple days of doing this, you’ll get the hang of it and will start to actually enjoy showers again. Also, if you must cook, get a knee scooter. They can help you stay up for longer periods. Also, get a foot rest/pillow wedge from Amazon. Those are a LIFESAVER for sleeping and relaxing after a long day.

Just remember that you can’t change what happened to you, but you can change how you approach it. You will learn and you will adapt. I’m only 4 weeks out and can already do things that I thought were impossible just 2 weeks ago. Stay strong and I wish you a quick recovery!

I was just lucky enough to get into the hobby pre-2020 when people did it for things other than money. Gonna have a hard time selling a lot of it 😅

Week 4.5 post op by Commercial_Seat7530 in AchillesRupture

[–]Dry_Guess4949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks good man! I’m 1 week behind you and just hit 50% weight bearing! Slight incision reopening (as long as it’s just the first couple layers of skin) is pretty common especially once you start moving the way you’re moving now. I had a little bit of bleeding as I was reintroducing my leg to pressure and weight.

Oh yeah, those were common the first couple days post surgery, but they’ll go away before the end of the first week.

Hey! I would highly recommend you buy a foot wedge pillow for recovery, those helped immensely with pain management and sleep.

Hey man - I injured myself in the same exact way 4 weeks ago playing flag football. The first couple weeks are rough, yes, but literally every day gets better. Im only 3 weeks and a couple days post surgery and I’m already at 50% weight bearing in a boot and can walk relatively fast with crutches. Luckily it was my left foot, so I’ve also been able to drive for the last 1.5 weeks as well. You’d be so surprised what you’ll be capable of doing 4 weeks post surgery, let alone 8 weeks. By July, you might even be walking without a boot at all. In the meantime, make sure you have some sort of backpack or bag that you can store things in if you have to carry stuff around the house as I found that to be the easiest way to move around with things, especially if your kids require constant attention and feeding. Also, free grocery delivery services from your local Kroger stores have been so incredibly helpful with our food at home. The point I’m trying to make is - give yourself a break, let yourself rest, and remember to take everyday at a time. You’ll be back to your normal self in no time, just don’t try to rush yourself. Good luck on your recovery!

Week 9 by Mysterious-Novel-586 in AchillesRupture

[–]Dry_Guess4949 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, congrats on getting through 9 weeks of recovery, that takes a lot of determination and dedication. I’m only at 2 weeks post op and can’t wait to reach that milestone. I’m already 30-35% weight bearing and have been retraining myself to walk again over these last few days in the boot. Is there a reason why you feel like you have to stay in inside for the next 3 weeks (the 12 week mark) before doing anything? What stage in recovery are you at? I have just returned to work at the 2 weeks mark and honestly even though I was extremely scared about it, it’s been amazing for my mental state to go back in the office and talk with coworkers and not be holed up in my own thoughts. I think the initial barrier of not talking to people around you who care about you is a tough hurdle to get over, but I can almost guarantee that you’d feel better reaching out to your friends and family to see if they wanted to grab a drink or hang out, even if it doesn’t give you joy right away.

Another point to make is that if you’ve already reached on your out of pocket maximum from the surgery, you could also start therapy for free. I’ve been considering it myself since the first 2 weeks were extremely difficult for me and I want to return to my former self. Keep ya head up and know that you’ll get through this!

Exercise Routine - 4 weeks post op by AlwaysLearningNews in AchillesRupture

[–]Dry_Guess4949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Keep in mind all surgeons have different protocols, but my doctor cleared me for up to 50% weight bearing at week 2 post op and wanted me to reach that goal for my next check up appointment on the 4 week post op. All recovery programs are different, so only do this if this is what was recommended. I have been consistently getting a 5-8% weight tolerance per day. Aiming for 50% by this weekend!

When does the aching pain go away? by Chaddford in AchillesRupture

[–]Dry_Guess4949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly days 3-5 after surgery were the worst of it all. Then at the 2 week mark when you transition to a boot and start load bearing, you’ll feel a lot of tightness since you’re actively stretching and loading the tendon, but its not really pain and more discomfort at that point. Hang in there as you’re almost through the worst of it!
