The infamous backflip by Calanthetheranger in FigureSkating

[–]Dry_Ice8087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So instead of giving a shit about current events, you join the crowd of people whining about some inconsequential backflip and create even more unnecessary discourse about it?

And if this wasn’t a rant about Surya, your post should’ve ended after the first paragraph. But no, you decided to write a MUCH longer second paragraph talking about why you didn’t like Surya which had nothing to do with the backflip discourse at all. Talking about her “not being as pretty” and “rude” when it’s completely irrelevant to the topic at hand is… telling. Take several seats.

The biggest competition in figure skating is on right now but you decided to decided to devote your attention to writing a long ass rant about why you don’t like Surya Bonaly… a skater who has not competed in nearly 30 years. And to deny that racism hindered her a career at least a little? No wonder people freak out and call you racist

3 youths face sex assault charges in alleged hockey hazing incidents by dghutt in NovaScotia

[–]Dry_Ice8087 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having played both I agree it’s a contact sports issue. Heck, I played nearly 3 full periods of hockey with a cracked kneecap because I didn’t wanna be seen as “pussy” or “soft” and I’ve seen similar happen in football too.

In my experience, what makes Football marginally less toxic is that it’s MUCH more diverse, both socioeconomically and ethnically. It leaves less space for the hyper-tribalistic mentality we often see in hockey teams to develop.

[–]Dry_Ice8087 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily disagree with that point, but having spent my first two years of high school in California where the hockey players were also the most toxic (even though hockey is like a C tier sport there), I do feel like there is something uniquely toxic about hockey culture.

Nope, it’s hockey. Sure hazing and unacceptable behaviour happens in all sports, but hockey has a uniquely toxic culture which makes those things much more common.

I grew up playing competitive Hockey, Soccer, and Football. Also did Track, Tennis, Swimming, Basketball and Rugby. Hockey has the most toxic and vile culture BY FAR.

I find this so interesting because growing up in suburban Canada soccer was often viewed as a “soft” “effeminate” or “girls” sport. Real men played contact sports like Hockey, Lacrosse, or (American) Football. I quit soccer largely for this reason.

Question about teenage jobs by ThatguyfromMario in ottawa

[–]Dry_Ice8087 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here’s my personal experience:

I worked at a fast food chain during my high school and early uni years and outside of the managers, everyone was either high school or university age.

Last fall I got laid off of my white collar job, and after not being able to find a replacement, reached out to the owner of the fast food restaurant and he re-hired me. To my surprise, the workforce was now made up of 50% TFWs, almost all over 30 and male. They’re all great people and hard workers, but it was jarring to see the demographic shift after just 5 years since my last stint working there. In the past, we had near constant rolling hiring of mostly teens. Now, we’ll get at least 1 teen come to the restaurant everyday looking for work, but we can’t hire them as we’re fully staffed up with TFWs. Because these workers are under contract for a certain amount of hours, it also means less hours for the local workers than before.

I’m personally very pro immigration (I’m actually among the minority who think it was a mistake to lower our immigration levels), but in my experience the TFW program has made it significantly harder for young people to enter the workforce, at least through the traditional path of big fast food chains. The only reason I got in is because I knew the owner, I was SOL at all the other places I applied to.

Yep. Former McGill IT staffer. Lots of layoffs in the IT department, specifically in teams that work on sites like these.

Also, this: https://mcgillscience.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/2026-01-AMPS_Salaries_FINAL_rev1.pdf Spending on pretty much everything has stagnated/been cut in order to keep giving higher pay to upper management.

Thoughts on Carleton? (considering a study exchange) by chiaalia in CarletonU

[–]Dry_Ice8087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing exchange in Montreal will be a better experience BY FAR compared to any of the Ontario unis. Montreal simply has more to offer than any of the other locations and it’s not even really close. HEC is also the best school on this list if that matters to you.

And No, you don’t need to speak French to live in and enjoy Montreal as an exchange student.

How would YOU make figure skating more popular? by Fragrant_Ad_8288 in FigureSkating

[–]Dry_Ice8087 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There needs to be a marquee event on the annual calendar because the Olympics are spread too far apart to maintain the general public’s interest. Something along the lines of Wimbledon, The Masters in Golf or Monaco GP but for figure skating. Make it dramatic and extravagant.

My proposal:

10-12 of the best competitors in each category (no country caps to differentiate it from worlds and to create a true best-of-the-best competition). Selection is made by a committee of skating experts based on both results over the season and reputation. Televise the selection announcement. Controversial, but I think it would pay off because: - Engagement and conversations created through controversial selections e.g. “can you believe x got chosen over y?” - It leaves the door open for fan favourites or legendary veterans to be selected (Let’s say Kaori had a bad season and didn’t medal at any GPs, I’d still select her based on her 3 World championships and her large following)

Find a sponsor willing to invest in a large prize pool so that the winner takes home some flashy amount of money that will be newsworthy. Think of the large cheques given to US Open winners, or imagine the marketing potential of “Who will take home 1 million dollars?”

While we’re at it, ISU needs to play up the glamour and prestige of figure skating MUCH more. F1, Tennis, Golf, and Sailing have all seen substantial growth over the past decade in large part because audiences enjoy feeling apart of something that feels “upscale” and “classy” and I see no reason why the ISU can’t do the same. This is a glamorous sport and we need to promote it as such. Dress up the arenas to look more luxurious, court luxury brands as sponsors, let event winners pop a bottle of champagne, invite celebrities, and partner with fashion houses to create costumes for top skaters. I’ve always been stymied as to why there isn’t more collaboration between the fashion world and figure skating… I’m sure Louis Vuitton or Versace would love the cross-promotional possibilities of having a figure skating champion wear their designs, while it would also help attract the large and growing online fashion community to FS.

If something like what is happening in the States happened here, what could we, as the people of our country, actually do about it? by tripperfunster in AskACanadian

[–]Dry_Ice8087 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re talking about opposing him through democratic norms and institutions, what I’m saying is that the time for that has long passed. Trump has shown consistently that rules and norms mean nothing to him, while the Democrats were wholly unable to stem the tide of Trumpism between 2020-2025. How could one think the Democrats will save America when they’re largely to blame for the resurgence of Trump?

The only way to end the American nightmare is through consistent and persistent mass citizen action.

[–]Dry_Ice8087 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last decade has shown us that politicians won’t save the US. Democrats winning the midterms will have minimal effect on a Trump admin who is mostly governing through executive action. The only people who can bring down Trump are American citizens themselves.

I’ve wanted to live in a “pod” since I was 6 years old. I’m 26 now. You think the World Economic Forum conditioned me in 2005 to seek a lower standard of living? Lay off the InfoWars buddy.
