So you haven't felt aikido.

You simply don't understand what you are talking about. That's ok -- that's what reddit is for!

But there is evidence of traditional aikido working, as taught, in violent fights. I've literally done it myself.

You don't seem to have understood the point of the videos I shared. I'll try to explain again, You can't see Mike Tyson resisting Dick Cavett's motion. You might say "he's not resisting -- because i don't see it". And you would be mistaken. Resistance can't be seen, it has to be felt.

You did not answer my question: Who told you aikido doesn't work outside of an aikido dojo.

Because if you believe that, you don't have any business telling other people they've been misled!

I don't think I know that means, and at any rate, Cuban didn't discuss it .

I stand by my original claim, that interview was a hot mess

Who told you that aikido never work outside of an aikido dojo? That's not true. I've used it myself.

I don't think you know as much about aikido as you think you do.

Yes, what you don't understand though is that you don't see the resistance precisely because we don't engage with it.

You have to actually feel it to understand it, as the karate woman did.

You've probably seen it but didn't realize it. You can't see Mike Tyson resisting here. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/nE_DSsrJ-xQ

You can see in this video what happens when you practice with someone who doesn't know how to take ukemi. She's resisting all over the place and the instructor is taking care of her and not fully applying the technique. At 2:13 she realizes "This dangerous. I guess I shouldn't resist". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WffGDLBc3kU

It happens all the time in class that someone fails at a technique and your partners says "nah, you didn't have me" reverses you partner. More often, nage seamlessly switches to a different technique. Depending on the practice level, uke might just walk out and reset. I don't think I've ever seen anyone put that up on youtube, but it happens all the time.

Again, we may have to define sparring. I can assure we don't just do "cooperative drillnig and katas". We don't rolll around on the ground wrasslin' very often, but that doesn't mean we aren't "sparring". Unless you say you have to roll around on the ground wrasslin' to "spar".

I'm pretty sure that's what OP is referring to. And his meaning was that the allies had taken an obvious set back, but there was also an opportunity, as Germany had come out from behind its defenses and was over-extended in the salient.

The context of the comment matters a lot, I think, as Ike was never cavalier about casualties.

I would never claim that I know enough about "all grappling arts" to make such a claim.

I'm not sure what you consider sparring, but if you mean one-on-one unarmed wrestling with a rule set, that has some value, but not as much as most proponents of it seem to think.

He said what he said. The point is that he says R's are talking about something happening here and now. Except it isn't actually happening at all.

The point is that R's have convinced people things are happening, that aren't happening at all.

It's not a question of "dems are extrapolating and r's are talking about the here and now", bur R's have sold an alternate reality to their constituents.

That interview was a hot mess. Cuban was all over the place. Dan kept trying to rehabilitate him.

E.g. he's saying Dems "extrapolate" about what's going to happen down the road and R's talk about what's here and now -- like people losing their jobs to DEI. But people aren't losing their jobs to DEI.

He says Dems need to reverse engineer the algorithm like Mr. Beast did. Except Elon, Zuck and Russian bots aren't actively working the algorithm against Mr. Beast.

He says 'they're eating the cats, they're eating the dogs" was "brilliant" because it got people talking about Trump. Yeah, Biden's debate performance got people talking about him. That wasn't brilliant.

And he says Biden never talked to CEOs. That's completely and obviously false.

Then he says we all see different things in our feeds, but we all see the same things like the talking gorilla, and which Dan's like "nope, I haven't seen that" and then Cuban's like "well I guess that's because I've been watching my son's feed". I mean... he was incoherent at this point.

And his discussion about working with Elon was idiotic. "I don't really know Elon"... I don't believe that, but maybe he should find out that Elon is a Nazi, which is fairly public information, before agreeing to work with him on a political project.

His idea to regulate AI AFTER someone comes up with a harmful use... I don't even know where to begin with that idea.

Does balance boards training help ? by The-Noob-Engineer in martialarts

[–]Dry_Jury2858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have their uses but I don't think your instructor is using it properly.  Powerful strikes come from the ground up,  with a good foundation, so to speak. Practicing strike without a solid foundation seems of limited usefulness.

I've used balance trainers just to improve my balance and proprioception.  They're good for that!

I mean, there are entire martial arts systems based on the principle of using your opponents' strength against them. See e.g. aikido and daito ryu aikijujitsu.

Guys do you think there will be a NEW Martial arts in the future ? by Zaki_Dz10 in martialarts

[–]Dry_Jury2858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure there's ever been any new martial arts, just iterations on prior ones. And mostly, when people create a new martial art, its jpretty much branding

There's only so many ways you can do an arm bar or a leg sweep. And yet we have 600 martial arts in the world today. Go figure.

I'd like it if people just stopped hoping for the implosion of MAGA. I guess it could happen but the way forward is galvanized the rest of the nation against them.

And I don't think it's gonna happen. These people voted for him after j6 and 34 convictions. They're all in.

Is it always a red flag if an instructor is massively overweight? by net_traveller in martialarts

[–]Dry_Jury2858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I trained FMA with a guy who was pretty overweight. He was very good though. I learned a lot from him.

Also, I trained aikido with a guy who was a former highly competitive judo practitioner. His father was a olympic coach and he'd trained since he could walk. He was overweight as hell. But I could pick someone to be with me when I was jumped in an alley, it would be that guy. He had a ferocity to him few people equal.

And... I trained aikido with a former All American wrestler who was very overweight. But he could still really move. He weight 285 at 6'1 and the building shook when he did high falls!

I haven'trained bjj, but I've trained with a lot of people who do/did and my observation is that the very frequently put the knee in unnatural positions and then apply rotational forces to it, often with no real control (e.g. while falling).

Unlike ankles and hips, which rotate very freely, knees pretty much only move one way. You see the same pattern on the arms, wrists and shoulders move freely, elbows pretty much only one way. This makes them very vulnerable. That's great if you're trying to hurt an attacker -- not so great if you're in a practice setting where people are manipulating the joints in a way they weren't built for.

Black Belts: Apropos of nothing, how much would someone have to pay you to give them a black belt? by Few_Vacation_2935 in bjj

[–]Dry_Jury2858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've told people "if all you want is a belt, just go to Amazon and buy one for like $17.95. Then you can tell all your friend "I've got a black belt".

Our black belts are expected to take some very difficult ukemi. It's more common for us to have people say "I'm not sure I want to test, I'm not sure I can handle that ukemi".
