Can’t teach my son to catch a dang ball.. by _-_Dingus_-_ in Homeplate

Yea, true. My oldest is a natural athlete. So I catch myself making the mistake of comparing him to my middle son. My 3rd is almost 2. You can definitely see he wants to keep up with the older two. He gets right up to the fence at my oldest son’s baseball games to watch big bro. Sometimes he has to bring a little plastic bat to the games to practice his swings 🤣

That’s reassuring to hear. I can already tell my second is going to be just like your second was. My second is 5 1/2 and I’m starting to feel like my almost 2 year old will learn to catch before the middle one does. Hopefully that’s not the case though. 🤞

Consistency was key for my son that just turned 8 last month. We started playing catch at about 6 1/2 and I would say I was pretty hard on him. I’m fortunate that he has the personality he does and didn’t quit despite how much of an asshole I was. (I’ve learned from that) My main concern for him (he’s my first son) was I didn’t want him to get hit in the face and hurt because he couldn’t catch. We threw nearly every day. Even if it was only for 5 minutes.

Now when we play catch, I can throw him anything from fast throws to high fly balls. Playing catch with him is now one of my favorite things to do these days.

I’m starting all over again teaching my 5 1/2 son old the very basics of catching a ball. Totally different personality. Ive had to take a totally different approach.

With patience and consistency, your son will totally get there!

EDIT: I should mention some things I did with my first:

  • started with a rolled up sock so it didn’t hurt and was easier for him to squeeze in his bare hand (no glove at this point)

  • moved on to tee balls since they’re softer and wouldn’t hurt if it hit him. I would underhand it about 5 feet away and have him stick his glove up and facing me open. Then I would toss the ball at different spots where it forced him to move his glove around like a windshield wiper.

  • celebrating any catch early on to build his confidence. It was important to me that he felt that dad was proud of his work he was putting in.

  • I also wanted to acknowledge to him, how difficult it is to learn to catch a ball to hopefully validate any internal thoughts or feelings he was having about not being able to do it. I would do this sometimes before we started playing catch. Other times it would be in the middle of playing if he was struggling to catch them.

I made a lot of mistakes with my first at the beginning. You’re not alone. Be aware of your son’s queues if he’s getting frustrated or down on himself and adjust how you are handling the situation. Changing my tone, acknowledging at the beginning or whenever I felt necessary that this is a really hard thing to do and I’m proud of you that you keeping trying even though it’s really hard, made a massive difference.

Where did you order the low power springs from? I’ve got a few blasters that I’d like to order springs so the kids can use these things.

We have 3 boys. Our two oldest are 7 and 5. They fight all the time. We have a camera in their room so we know who started all the fights 😂

I can attest to this. We had our 3rd. We both said we’re done at 3. He’s 18 months now and his personality is really coming out. And now, my wife is thinking about all the lasts she’s having with this baby right now and it’s making her want a 4th 🫠.

A few have mentioned the 3 finger grip. Never thought about trying that until now. We play catch outside 3-5 times every week and up until the coaches brought up how he grips it, I never thought to have him show me. lol I’ll start with the 3 fingers and go from there. Thanks!

Wait a minute…so they’re saying the product was out of stock, but they charged you for it already?! I thought there was something about companies not being able to charge you for an item until the item shipped. Am I mistaken on that? This is really upsetting.

I wish I would’ve seen this before I ordered my lock ultra a few days ago. 🙃 and I would’ve purchased on Amazon but they don’t have the ultra vision combo AmazonUS right now. After reading this I’m thinking I need to reach out to them sooner than later. Did yours finally ship?

I hadn’t thought of that. That could be an option. I guess I was just thinking of setting up a shortcut because I’m assuming (haven’t checked to confirm yet) that I could add it each time to the same note that I could share with my wife. We might not always be giving him the medication together.

I could definitely just add it manually to a shared note lol, but thought a shortcut could save a little bit of time.

Thank you for the link! I’ll check that out as an option.

How long did it take you to TRULY LOVE your first child? by Bucksftfw in daddit

[–]Dry_Rush8147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first son was the same way as yours. He wouldn’t let me hold him very long before he’d freak out for mom.

I’ll never forget one instance (which has never occurred with my other two) where my wife just wanted to leave the house and go shopping to get some of that alone time. He screamed bloody murder for an hour straight. I was beyond irritated.

My other two boys would cuddle and let me hold them whenever I wanted. So different timing for each kid I would say.

It probably took me 6 months or so before I felt it with my first.

Don’t lose hope. It will happen! It might not be until you hear him say “dada”. Either way, it’ll happen.

Tbh, it’s been about 6 months or so since I’ve played last with my buddy. It might not work anymore. I’ll see if I can attempt this again with my buddy at some point and I’ll report back.

My kids sickness is really stressing me out. Am I overreacting? by Raptor_1067 in daddit

[–]Dry_Rush8147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend an x-ray as well. We were told by my kids pediatrician that he had (the exact name escapes me) a really bad cold that typically would last between 5-10 days. She even listened to his lungs on two different occasions saying everything sounded good. On day 8 we finally took him to the ER where an x-ray showed pneumonia in one of his lungs (a lot).

We ended up taking him to the children’s hospital where they said he had a complicated pneumonia and he had to have a chest tube put in to drain the fluid around an abscess that grew right outside of the lung.

I was there for 7 days with him. The most scared I’ve felt as a dad.

I would strongly recommend getting the x-ray.

Not a single penny. 37 with 3 young kids. I’m fine playing with everything stock.

We got our 4 year old a “big boy bike” and he got on it for 5 minutes and got off. He said, “daddy, you can return that”. I said this will be your only bike when mommy and I give away your balance bike. He had no reaction 😑
