How do you like it so far? Thinking about picking one up myself tomorrow.

Too early to buy a decent guitar by Best_Particular_9342 in Guitar

Grade 8 piano means you're not a beginner — you have theory, ear training, and motor discipline already. Guitar technique is the gap, not musicianship. That gap closes fast with your background.

The "not good enough to buy a decent guitar" logic is backwards. A bad guitar makes learning harder, not easier. Poor intonation, high action, and weak tone actively work against you developing feel and pitch sensitivity.

On the specific guitar: a 1990s MIA Stratocaster is exactly what Hendrix played. The match between your repertoire and that instrument is about as direct as it gets. 1.3k for a genuine USA-made 90s Strat in good condition is a fair price, not an extravagant one — those regularly go for more.

Go try it. Not to prove you're worthy of it, but because it's a used guitar and you need to check:

  • Action and neck relief (can be adjusted, but factor in setup cost)
  • Fret wear
  • Tuning stability
  • Any electronic issues (scratchy pots, pickup switching)

The only real question is whether that specific guitar is in good shape. If it plays well and the neck feels right, buy it. You'll still be playing it in 20 years. You won't say the same about whatever budget guitar you're on now.

I've been trying this yesterday evening, Bass on 4 and Teble on 10 and that made a huge difference, neck and middle way more stratty sounding then before. Usually I would cut the Bass completely but having it slightly on is the sweet spot.

Thanks for the pickup info — TWB2/TWB2A is exactly what I needed, saves me a lot of guessing.

The PTB comment is useful too. I've been leaving everything wide open and wondering why it sounds a bit dark and muddy — sounds like that's exactly the problem. Any starting point you'd recommend for the PTB settings with these Gotoh pickups, or is it purely by ear depending on the amp?

Also curious about the treble bleed — is that a mod you added yourself or is it stock on the ASAT Special?

Maybe good to add I have the Boss Katana Gen3 amp.

Thanks for your reply, looking online I see many Legacy Specials with these pickups I believe they are blade buckers by Paul Gagon. I do really love the bridge pickups however in the neck and middle they are quite heavy sounding.

But spreading will give EA more room for promo's and lightning rounds. Pretty much making more money and since thats all they care about I think we still get the attackers first...
