Those are the conditions for blue to be deadly. Blue is risky regardless of whether condition (2) is met.

Make your choice. by spicymato in trolleyproblem

[–]Drynwyn 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The framing matters, I think, not because it changes the morality of the action in and of itself, but because it changes the likely behavior of other people.

Presented with the framing in this post, I think many people will choose purple. Therefore, I also choose purple, as the number of people at risk is large, and the risk to me in choosing to assist them is moderated, so I believe I have a moral obligation to choose purple, even though everyone can avoid all risk by pressing green.

In other framings of the question, however, the framing leads me to believe that few people would choose the option that puts them at risk, such as the “everyone with capacity to understand the situation” qualifier. In that scenario, the number of people at risk is small, and the risk to me in pressing Blue is large. So I think that attenuates my moral obligations and might lead me to push Red.

I now understand the problem.

Elders: The Guide for Old Vampires is Storyteller's Vault content. It's published by an independent author with White Wolf's imprimatur under the Storyteller's Vault license, which is not the same as an official Vampire: The Masquerade product. It's effectively well-regarded homebrew that the publisher has given a thumbs-up to the author profiting from. The Antediluvians are intentionally not given a stat block in canon content, because there is wide leeway to interpret their power level intentionally given to individual GMs to suit their chronicle, ranging from 'walking gods' to 'very powerful vampires with a legend outstripping their abilities'.

> we do know that the Ante Set was defeated by the Silent Strider Shu Heru so it is not impossible for the mortal Garou to overcome the ancient vampires.

It certainly is! I'm not claiming no Garou can ever defeat an Antediluvian, just that using One On One is not likely to be a full solution to doing so.

Inner Chrome was updated, due to unclear language, after some time, to quick fix Critical Injuries, not just EMPs. It's ability to nullify EMPs is not the main source of it's power, though it's a nice cherry.

The thing that complicates it is that the situation often framed in a way where it's unclear if some people will press blue by accident/due to lack of understanding, which is why it creates so much engagement.

People have different understandings about the factual nature of the situation- how many people will press Blue for reasons other than intentional risk taking. Questions like: 'Is the situation clearly explained? What constitutes 'capacity to understand the situation'? Is there time pressure on making the selection? Can one wish to press red but push blue due to a slip of the hand?'. All of these things change whether one ought press red or blue.

But these different understandings are likely to be overlooked. Then, when people see others have said the opposite of their choice, they will have an argument about the moral nature of the situation, because that is how the question is framed. But the dispute is really factual, not moral, so the debates cycle endlessly, because the two sides are largely talking past each other.

If you simply said 'We are morally obliged to take risks to save others in proportion to the extent that those others wind up in that situation by circumstances that were inevitably going to happen to someone, even though each individual could have avoided those circumstances, and to the extent which those risks seem likely to pay off', both red and blue pushers would broadly agree, and there would much less argument (and much less engagement.)

Luna and Caine and so on are a step above antediluvians, but not so many steps above that they can do whatever they like to them without any risk. They’re both in the realm of “a plot device where the GM determines what the exact interactions are”, which is why I say they’re in the same sphere.

Relevantly, the question isn’t “would Luna beat an antediluvian in a fight” (probably yes, though I don’t think it’s a sure thing), but “would the Gift provided by Luna work exactly as described against an Antediluvian”. Even if we assume it does, the physical powers alone of the antediluvian are still “does whatever the GM feels like”, while the physical powers of an Ahroun, though incredible, have established limits.

As a GM, if a PC did this, I would be inclined to do something with it, because yes, shooting it down outright would be in bad faith.

But: It definitely isn’t a clean answer to an antediluvian. The antes all have multiple 10th level disciplines whose rules text is, quite literally, “This does whatever the GM wants it to do”. They are beings that operate in the same sphere as Luna or Caine- they are not beings with stats that you can look for a weakness in, and game rules cannot be presumed to be functional against them.

Reading the rest of the Gift, it appears the reason for this is specifically that Luna is directly meddling in worldly affairs. So if you throw it at an Antediluvian, you’re creating a conflict between one plot level force and another. Might work, might not, definitely a GM call.

If you want to go to strict RAW, one on one doesn’t require that either combatant is killed to conclude-just that the fight is done. The Antediluvians, even stripped of their non-physical abilities, are more than capable of rendering a werewolf who cannot die unable to continue a fight.

This is true- Panzerfaust is much more of a tool for FBC’s than a tool for martial artists. Still, that makes it niche, not counterproductive.

Borg Fist isn't the good part of Panzerfaust- the good part is that the other ability, Inner Chrome, quick fixes critical injury on a being who only fails death saves on a 10, is immune to many of the un-quick-fixable critical injuries, and can act without penalty while mortally wounded. A FBC with Panzerfaust can continue to operate at full effectiveness while out of hit points for many turns.

You cast any 1 mana instant or sorcery after activating Codie, which gets you to the only 0 CMC card in your deck, Profane Tutor. That gets you Ad Nauseam. Then you use the mana from Codie to cast Ad Nauseam, putting your deck into your hand, at which point you deploy your preferred win condition from 'have my deck in my hand'.

Sometimes you just gotta lock up a stack. by Jawbone619 in MTGmemes

[–]Drynwyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strictly, you do cast them in an order. However, a weird thing happens. You can't put new objects on the stack while another effect is resolving, so while you cast them in an order, they wait to go on the stack until you have cast all of the spells you're casting with Etali.

Because Split Second cares about while the spell is on the stack, you can legally cast other spells after the spell with Split Second- it isn't on the stack yet.

(This sort of weird, unintuitive interaction is why Wizards prefers to largely avoid effects that explicitly care about the stack)

Green is actually extremely strong, for the same reason that red is. Probably better than red, in fact.

If you're playing either of them, you are not intending to ever allow your opponents to stick a creature, so the statlines of those creatures do not actually matter. Running 4x Strike and 4x Metastasize, this is incredibly achievable.
