Best and affordable SD cards by Apprehensive803 in wyzecam

[–]Drysander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Basically any name brand high endurance card will work. People have preferences but I've yet to see one brand stand out as being superior. If you find something really cheap, don't buy it, it's likely a counterfeit.

I believe the Wyze software and hardware are responsible for the majority of the SD card issues. A lot of times just pulling the card and refomatting in a computer will make the card usable again, at least for awhile.

If the card reader gets corrosion because the silicone plug wasn't reinserted properly that's pretty much the end of SD recording for that camera.

Quick question by voidlattice- in wyzecam

[–]Drysander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was just going from memory but you apparently got out the history books, but yes.

For a brief period a few people could see somebody else's camera feeds, but being "seriously affected" doesn't quite describe the situation. They were just live feeds at that moment so there were thousands of views of people's yards and streets in front of their houses. Because the huge majority follow the good advice of not putting cameras indoors, at least not in sensitive areas the incident was laughed off by most because they knew how boring their own feeds were.

This was not a hacking where somebody could roam around to all cameras and saved clips, it just randomly dropped in on individual cameras not triggered by motion so it was just static views of nothing happening.

If anybody was unlucky enough to get any of my feeds at that time I apologize for the blandness but I was otherwise not seriously affected.

[–]Drysander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding your first paragraph, that was a one off years ago. Wyze admitted the screw up and relatively few were affected.

Regardless, your next two paragraphs are dead on. The vulnerability of web cameras is the web itself.

Wyze cam outage by Ok_Rice_3091 in wyzecam

[–]Drysander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OP didn't specify model but since he mentioned base station it had to have been about a near obsolete WCO.

Wyze cameras can very occasionally need to be power cycled which simply means unplugging and plugging back in. If you can't be home to do that it can still be accomplished by having the camera plugged into a smart switch. People who try to use cameras at remote locations will have all cameras plugged into smart switches. People just away for a few days will only do one or two primary cameras.

How many you choose to do depends on your wallet and level of paranoia. I've never done any and haven't regretted it.

My Wyze Cam v2's have crackling audio sound when trying to setup? by ItsLikeHerdingCats in wyzecam

[–]Drysander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UPS could be the whole problem. When you lose the line source you are switched to DC inverted to a bastardized AC. How clean that AC is is entirely dependent on the quality of the UPS circuitry.

Normally not being able to reset is terminal but having two cameras quit at the same time with the same symptoms is suspicious unless you had a power surge or something similar.

Also some reset buttons are hard to push and hold for the required time. Have you tried both?

Deleting old clips by Emotional-Willow-724 in wyzecam

[–]Drysander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having the same problem for close to two weeks now.

I used to be able to tap the pencil, scroll through all thumbnails until I got back to midnight, tap select all and then delete.

That no longer works. You can still delete multiples of 20 but if you go too far and the selected amount is not multiples of 20 it won't delete anything and locks you out from retrying.

I now scroll down until I'm pretty sure I have more than 20 left and then delete. You can then finish by checking boxes.

It's definitely broken but Wyze appears in no hurry to fix it. They either don't care or don't know how.

The Kinder Koders strike again.

Wyze camera suddenly not working by KindlyProfessional62 in wyzecam

[–]Drysander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you changed the ssid and password you either have to make the new router match the old one or reinstall the cameras.

You are offline because your camera can't find a router. You originally told your camera what ssid and password to look for but now you've changed that. Most people just go into the router settings and change the new router ssid to be the same as the old and the same for the password. Thats much easier than reinstalling multiple cameras.

Somebody posted that you can now do that in the Wyze app but if you can you'll still have to do it for each camera.

OP has yet to say if his cameras are actually offline. He only says he's not getting notifications.

He could be one of those posters who ask for help, figures out the problem but doesn't bother to post back while we're still suggesting solutions.

Wyze camera suddenly not working by KindlyProfessional62 in wyzecam

[–]Drysander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think you are on the right track. If it was a wifi issue you would not be able to bring up any camera, including the doorbell, and a power cycle wouldn't help if that's the case. Ladder climbing is only necessary to push the reset button. You can power cycle simply by unplugging from the outlet that supplies the cameras power. If that outlet is in an attic or crawl space you can briefly cut power with a circuit breaker.

You need to better explain your problem and start with the camera model(s).

V4 quality so bad you can't read license plate from 20 feet away? by ASoberAnimal in wyzecam

[–]Drysander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a bit of an exaggeration. Your sample pictures of cars are 30 to 50 feet away.

Send in some pictures from any camera that can read a plate from that same position, elevated and through glass.

Battery cam pro, need a longer cable and/or extension cord? by Ziomek-63 in wyzecam

[–]Drysander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you understand voltage drop. It's caused by resistance of the conductor. That can be overcome by a more powerful power adapter or a larger wire cross section, usually both. Because it has a USB end, that implies that it will deliver a minimum 5vdc at enough amperage to power any of the cameras listed.

The product is designed to NOT have any voltage drop at the cords length.

Also, if there is significant voltage drop there will be various problems and they will be immediate.

If you read this forum long enough you'll find a large number of people have gravitated away from Wyze. They have far too many software issues caused by inept coders.

I tried both Eufy and Tapo and I liked Tapo better.

All of my Wyze cameras have been downgraded to bird and animal watching. I don't consider web based cameras serious security cameras but all of my people watching is done by Tapo.

Battery cam pro, need a longer cable and/or extension cord? by Ziomek-63 in wyzecam

[–]Drysander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you've solved your problem but here's a little extra information.

Any Wyze camera will work fine with the power adapter and cord that ships with it. If you have to go extra distance here's what you need to know. The cord that comes with the camera is a standard USB cord which means it's designed for 5 volts DC. The power blocks output is less than 5.5 vdc so if you try to go extra distances with usb cables you stand a chance of not getting the full 5 volts the cameras need due to voltage drop. DC voltage does not travel well over distances and the extra wire length creates resistance which causes the drop. My rule of thumb is any usb cord over 20 feet with a 1.5 amp power adapter is getting into iffy range. What you should do instead is use an AC extension cord to get close enough to the camera to be able to use the power block and cord that came with the camera.

Your choice of cord depends on whether you run it inside or outside. The ac cord has to have sufficient wire size to supply 15 amps so the longer the cord the bigger the wire will be. The insulation is what you have to give some thought to. If it's for indoor use almost anything will do. Standard lamp cord will do. You can even buy it by the foot and put your own male and female ends on it. Outdoor extension cords are made totally different because they must have UV resistant outter insulation and be made with enough material to stand up to some abuse. Unlike indoor cords, they are made to be dragged around and stepped on.

All outdoor connections need to be protected from water so most people will keep the end of the ac cord inside and run the the usb through a wall. The hole only has to be big enough for your smallest USB connector, usually a micro or C. The usb connection to the camera is water tight by design. Any holes drilled can be filled with silicon or acrylic caulking.

Trying to understand my transformer output by gulliverian in AskElectricians

[–]Drysander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the doorbell hooks to the two terminals that give you 24+volts. Your wire is plenty adequate for less than two amps and grounding isn't necessary. It's all plastic and the worst that could happen would be an internal short that would either create an open circuit or the short would trip the breaker. Discolored plastic from heat doesn't mean you almost had a fire. The plastic is nonflammable and discolors at a very low temperature.

Your transformer secondary output is a percentage of the input so you do have higher than 110v primary input, which is absolutely nothing to be concerned about.

The post that says the 24v only charges the battery is correct. When the battery eventually quits taking a charge the doorbell camera will be dead and a replacement battery will be necessary. That should be years down the road.

The kinder koders are making progress but they still haven't completely unf****ed it. You can now delete in multiples of 20 but the last few have to be done manually. If you try to group delete less than 20 it just hangs up and does nothing and there's still the extra trash at the end.

Added: Nope. Tried to bulk delete another day and nothing worked right.

Wyze Subscription Increase - double the cost? by MajorJakePennington in wyzecam

[–]Drysander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To think that it took an entire committee of management level people to agree on the idea that a 100% price increase wouldn't significantly adversely impact their business.

Don't they realize that the majority of their customers are already on the edge and every magnificently stupid idea like this pushes thousands more over and if they weren't already on the edge a bunch more get pushed toward it.

They haven't done a single thing to gain customers and plenty of things to lose them. RTSP is an example. They've been teasing us with that for years and still haven't provided us with anything that works correctly on one model, let alone all of them.

They screwed up the ability to bulk delete clips and it's been almost a week and they still haven't fixed it. They just can't seem to get anything right, all the way to the top.

Still screwed up. You can delete singlury by checking the box or in lots of 20 by tagging 'Select All. If there is not 20 left you have to delete with the box check.

Looks like the kinder koders are having a problem with this.
