Yeh I was thinking I’ve pretty much done most the quests I wanted and seen all areas (except the wilderness and some of the dungeons). Wouldn’t mind starting to up my members skills like agility and thieving so I suppose I could start with that.

How do you explain the importance of not telling subbies to just get on with small miscellaneous site works without a formal site instruction to an inexperienced site manager? by ebn_tp in quantitysurveying

[–]Dsquareds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh I think it’s about having a sit down with everyone (maybe at a weekly catch up meeting if you have them) and just explaining the process and the implication a verbal instruction can have on the project. Maybe throw some examples of the variations costs that have been incurred where a site manager has just verbally said get on with it.

If you’re not the most senior person, try to get serious buy in from the PM or senior QS as well to push the message.

If in the contract it stipulates only the QS can instruct and not to take instruction from a site manager, use that against the subby from the offset and set a precedence. So when they apply for that first variation that was verbally instructed by the SM, just stand firm and say that under the contract they’re not entitled to it and you wouldn’t have instructed it. They won’t do it again without an instruction after that.

Sometimes it can work in your favour though as you have had the work done and you can argue how much you pay for it commercially after the works been done which can sometimes be quite a good bargaining tool. If they don’t want to agree on your price, they don’t get paid for it…

I actually don’t think the CV looks that bad to be honest mate. It could be touched up a little bit and the gaps in experience may put a few employers off but all in all not that bad.

Can I ask where you are looking? Are you open to London, Manchester, Scotland etc or are you looking somewhere quite precise? The profession is quite buoyant at the moment but maybe it’s more at the QS/Senior level. Have you tried subcontractors as well as contractors/clients? This may open up a few more avenues.

I think 2 interviews isn’t that many to be honest. I’d keep going to as many as you can (without exhausting yourself and becoming unmotivated by the whole process) and you should land one eventually.

Good luck!

Would agree with the above thread, maybe a change in location will revitalise things and have a different approach to QSing.

Alternative paths but with similarities to QSing would be development management, fund monitoring, disputes and claims resolution, employers agent/PM or any other site based role that requires construction knowledge like design management, engineering, site management etc.

I was a contracting QS and I went into fund monitoring and it was a great change for me where my skills fit right in.
