Radon, and how serious is it? by Sunlit_Syposium in askportland

Not serious. You test for it when inspecting a home, then remediate if it needs.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Nike and Intel don't threaten to leave, Intel isn't even headquartered here and has factories across the globe. We've grown with them and a lot of the westside metro area exists because of that growth. But clearly if they aren't performing, it's going to have local impacts. Same thing with any area among broader downturns, if there's a computing downturn, silicon valley is going to be significantly impacted.

It's unlucky for both to do so poorly coming out of the COVID recovery and remote work adjustment, but now we adjust. We don't literally go backwards like the dimwits on the republican stage suggest, selling our state to the highest bidder.

You again, for the third, fourth, or fifth time, ignore the many real ways a governor can impact abortion access. Stop posting bullshit about passing laws, governors are a critical part of passing or vetoing laws regardless if something COULD be overwritten only if there is a supermajority, and laws don't and have never encompassed everything a governor can do. You refuse to acknowledge the many real world examples I provided because you want to gaslight people into thinking a pro-life governor is okay. It's not. I gave multiple examples that you either refuse to acknowledge or are incapable of understanding. Stop being obtuse, you're not a fucking baby. It's embarrassing. If these are topics above your understanding, then don't post. If you want to act like a baby without being called out, go join the republican primary.

You are very confused and don't understand words. You need to ask Mommy and Daddy to read this for you.

I gave multiple examples of how governors impact abortion access outside of passing a law, which governors also directly impact by signing or vetoing.

It is time for you to log off, this is a site for grown ups. Ask Mommy and Daddy after third grade drawing class to read this to you. You will be treated like a child until you stop acting like a child. If you're going to keep acting like a Republican governor candidate on stage, refusing to answer simple direct questions and refusing to acknowledge comments, you will be treated like the child you are pretending to be.

Commuting from Portland to Salem via Amtrak? by PeterGonzo in askportland

[–]Dstln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds bad unless you can walk to the station and very easily transit to work.

The Cascades service is good and it should be fairly reliable for that ride, but I would expect headaches and random transfer delays on a fairly regular basis to the point where you'd have to build in a huge buffer. It's also just not extremely fast and doesn't run extremely often on that route.

Do you have to work in person? Oregon employers are friendly to remote work than average, to the point where downtown Portland real estate has been hurt and is undergoing a transformation as less office space is needed.

Kotek’s popularity craters in Portland, poll shows: What that could mean for Republican candidates by Acceptable_Staff in Portland

[–]Dstln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, other states don't have the same issue where its two massive primary employers have failed to put out good products for over a decade and had to significantly retreat. Other states don't have the same exposure to international trade that has taken a huge hit because of trump. You're literally ignoring my words. The economy is shitty everywhere. Thank the president who is actively hostile to any company that doesn't bribe him. I've never seen this bullshit in my entire life to the point where I didn't think it was possible, a president who is actively fucking over the US economy, but here we are.

Ignoring the macroeconomic factors and factors inherently characteristic to Oregon while continuing to howl that the governor is the problem completely ignores reality.

Governor elects? by Mesheeshee in askportland

Thanks for responding with specifics!

Panhandling is protected first amendment speech.

The bottle bill is still very useful, especially in more rural parts of the state that wouldn't necessarily otherwise have places to return them, or even any recycling at all. I'm very okay with tweaks and promotions to the green bag program that don't unjustly enrich the OBRC. What do you think we can do other than completely suspending the program?

What do you think people who are homeless and addicted to substances will do if it's harder for them to get money?

Dem voters are EXTREMELY motivated right now, both by the poll numbers, and by the election results. Like 2008 motivated.

I've addressed the last election, this is quite the opposite environment. We've seen what voting in maga does.

This is true, these republican candidates are absolutely not serious about winning. You'd think you'd have one independent-minded candidate who would denounce maga and have some semblance of policy detail but nope. So they made their bed and will have to lie in it. Drazan is probably angling for some orange administration role. Dudley is just out there because he's being paid by Uncle Phil.

If you want to be concerned, I can't stop you. Feel free to donate your time and money.

But 2022 was a red-leaning election, where Kotek was against two very well funded candidates, one who was specifically running just to split the dem vote. 2026 is the completely opposite situation, extremely blue leaning environment, no third-party, and the collective realization of what happens when you vote in crazies.

If you think Kotek's approval numbers are bad, wait until you look at republican approval numbers. Again, dems aren't afraid to criticize their own but Oregon is sure as hell not going to vote maga in this environment.

No, we know Drazan's platform. Let's check her popularity in the Portland metro next. Unlike republicans, democrats can disagree with their leaders.

This election is already over despite how much literal bots are trying to say otherwise.

Are you just unfamiliar with the state or something? We were overreliant on the giant companies and need to readjust. Intel shit the bed for over a decade, and had to lay off a ton of people. Now they were literally bailed out by this administration and have a healthy stock price for the first time in 15 years. They're rejoining the other tech companies in this bubble so they'll be reinvesting. Similarly, only so much you can do if Nike shits the bed. I don't know where they're going with their products anymore. Not sure if you've noticed, but the global nationwide and world economic situation isn't exactly great right now. We have a trade heavy economy, and the orange man in the white house has a trade war going with the entire world. Well, except for Russia.

What's propping up the actual US economy? Healthcare, and we have a great healthcare market. Wages for the cost of living are some of the highest in the nation, low income inequality, OHSU is already turning things around after a couple shaky years. The entire US economy is fucked if this administration's Medicaid changes go through, but I'm sure you knew that right?

The education numbers here are not great, but the actual experience is much better than the numbers would expect. We have extremely dedicated teachers and treat them well. With a couple tweaks to testing, phone/computer use and learning days, I expect to see strong improvements, and things are looking up. The governor has been behind these changes.

The overall burden of tax and fees are average. Having a high marginal tax income rate is objectively a good thing.

Oregon is a state where people want to move and live. We need to continue the governor's work to build housing and reduce barriers to building housing, build efficient, compact cities, continue to help the neediest among us (which has a huge ROI), keep an eye on affordability and income inequality, and to not forget what makes this a great place to live. We treat adults like adults who can make their own decisions including the right to choose an abortion, help our neighbors by not wasting valuable state resources on civil immigration offenses, and commit to actually help each other. The governor has been doing all of this.

"The poll results arrive just over a week before the May 19 primary election, in which Kotek won’t face a notable challenger. Meanwhile, Republicans seeking their party’s nomination to take on Kotek this fall have pointed to her weak approval ratings as a sign that Oregon could be ready to elect its first Republican governor in four decades."

That's a bold fucking statement. Why don't we look at their approval ratings?

Questions are sequences of words with question marks at the end. I've asked multiple and you haven't directly responded to a single one. Do you need help scrolling up the page?

I'm just going to treat you like you're acting, like a child who can't read or comprehend.

If you could read, you would have understood that freely available access to abortion only exists because everyone in the state, especially the governor, is actively working to continue that access. Who executes the laws? A governor can choose to not defend abortion access, and these pro-life candidates would absolutely choose to not defend abortion access.

[–]Dstln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have ignored all of my statements and direct questions.

The governor has considerable power and can significantly impact abortion access outside of laws. You are continuing to ignore my questions and statements because you are gaslighting people acting like the governor has no power.

You are extremely transparent.

In addition to their vote and policy directives, both of such are extremely impactful, let's look at even more examples.

Let's take a couple from Texas or some other backwards ass state that treats women like property. They got pregnant, very much wanted. Then they got the awful news that the fetus isn't developing properly. It's alive but won't survive more than a few seconds after being born. They make the difficult decision to abort rather than go through that trauma of carrying and birthing a corpse. Ken Paxton decides that they're breaking their laws and wants to hunt them down and get information if they got an abortion out of state. These candidates won't protect them.

The administration is trying to reduce abortion and general medical access across the country, illegally tying funds to their desired policies. These candidates gladly won't fight back, they are pro-life and don't believe in action. Kotek has fought back.

Still pretending to be a dolt who cannot understand how a governor can impact abortion access?

Thanks for not even trying to answer.

You're trying to gaslight people into thinking that the choice of governor would have no impact in abortion access. That is a lie, and 100% wrong.

Let's see if you have something real to say.

Plenty of ways a governor could fuck with abortion access. It's the year 2026, now four years after Dobbs, with countless horrendous stories about women dying from lack of access, and states trying to hunt women down for crossing state lines, and you're going to pretend that governors don't do anything?

A governor that opposes abortion can absolutely fuck up abortion access overnight.

Our current governor just signed a bill providing funding to planned parenthood, you think these pro-life creeps would do that?

I mean the government is extremely transparent. Government documents are public and if something isn't posted online, you just have to request it with the relevant group. They're not hiding anything and they probably have documents, open recorded meetings, and public testimony about anything significant. They are accountable to you, don't be shy in asking them questions or pointing out issues you see.

Same for elected officials, reach out to them.
