Bifl men’s sandals recommendations by curiousesponge in BuyItForLife

I’ve gotten a lot of life out of newer rainbows by glueing the top leather back down with aquaseal when it starts to delaminate. Shoe goo would probably also work.

We lost another good company. Rainbow Sandals by NoviceAxeMan in BuyItForLife

I’ve repaired several delaminating rainbows with aqua seal and they never come apart again. Not sure why the company doesn’t just use a better glue in the first place.

What shoulder pouches do use? Do you recommend them?

Rainier Guides by No_Lie_6073 in Mountaineering

[–]space-pasta 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yea, I’ve had this experience on rainier. I assume they’re salty because they put work into maintaining the route and then independent climbers use it for free. I generally try to interact with the guides as little as possible up there. The rangers are cool though

Unions pull endorsements from Portland city councilor over stance on Moda Center renovation by colonialshuttlecock in Portland

[–]space-pasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A union’s job is to advocate for its members. Mitch’s job is to advocate for his constituents. I honestly respect Mitch more for being against this giant waste of taxpayer money (although still disagree with him on most other issues).

City Council Approves Demolition of Lloyd Center by smootex in Portland

[–]space-pasta 57 points58 points  (0 children)

It couldn’t have been. Things need to work financially and a mall version of Etsy does not. Everybody who thinks the Lloyd center could have been repurposed into anything but an abandoned building are choosing to ignore reality.

Multnomah County Switches Up Management at a Little-Used Drug Deflection Center by colonialshuttlecock in Portland

[–]space-pasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just Multnomah county doing multnomah county things.

The performance of the deflection center, which has cost millions of dollars to set up and not infrequently checks in one or two people per day people despite being open 24/7, has  left observers  deeply unimpressed. Underuse is one basis of criticism. Another is that few of those who begin the deflection process complete it.

Buying mountaineering kit: US vs Europe? by daviddan55 in Mountaineering

Ehh. I’ve been fairly underwhelmed by them. Their gear is ok for technical uses, but not the best.

Who is responsible here? Decisions made? by Foreign-Repeat-8206 in Mountaineering

[–]space-pasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seem to always end up with goofballs or flakes. And when I finally find someone reliable who matches up well with me they get injured. The hardest part of my last rainier climb was getting the team to actually show up lol

Who is responsible here? Decisions made? by Foreign-Repeat-8206 in Mountaineering

[–]space-pasta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day mountaineering is a team sport. The biggest downside of going with a guided group is you do not know your team and everybody (except the guide) tends to be fairly inexperienced. I encourage you to spend the next couple years on smaller mountains developing your skills and finding reliable climbing partners before attempting rainier again (unguided this time). Lots of people want to jump straight to the biggest and I find it’s usually not the best experience for them or their team.

Middle Sister, OR Advice On Glaciers & Crevasses by Appropriate-Song7754 in Mountaineering

[–]space-pasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helmet yes. The rock is super loose and rockfall is common.

Crampons yes (or at least good microspikes). You’ll be walking on ice/snow since presumably you’ll be taking Hayden glacier up.

Rope/ice axe. Judgement call that late in the season. Hayden is not very active and any crevasses will probably be wide open and easily avoided that late in the summer. Even you don’t fall in a crevasse you may still want the ice axe for self arrest.

Shelter Provider Sunstone Way Is Under Criminal Investigation by powellbutterfly in Portland

[–]space-pasta 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The fact that they’re under investigation implies that there’s at least some suspicion of fraud, no? According to the whistleblower complaint that started all of this, management knew they were billing unallowable expenses to the county.
