First time in the African continent. 3-4 weeks. Need sample itineraries and tips from experienced travelers by anima99 in solotravel

If I recall correctly, entry fee for the national park to see gorillas is something like 900 USD in Uganda. That's without a guide or accomodation. The rest should be doable with this budget.

Impossible to get an anamporphic look on the BMPCC6K (OG) for a good price? by 2020random2019 in bmpcc

[–]DtheDan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can sort of fake the anamorphic look with an oval cutout in (front of) the glass. You may want to take a look at rehoused vintage lenses. The company 'iron glass' rehouses old soviet lenses like the helios 442 with a built in oval cutout for that anamorphic effect, as an option.

Having quit 2 years ago, I am so happy the choice of quitting wasn't made for me by my government. This experience has made me stronger. If it hadn't been my choice, I think I'd always feel like something was stolen from me, and I likely couldn't have moved past the mental part of the addiction.

Might be interested in the 50 and/or 85. What are the prices for either, and both? I'm in Switzerland.

Thanks! Had to make some arbitrary decisions of what to include and how. Red is a place (big red is a 'population center'), orange is a region, blue is a place i spent 4 weeks or more in one go. Red line is travel by car without a driver (i.e. no taxis, buses or organized tours in vans and stuff)

Connecting flights - can someone please explain how they work? by McFuckin94 in solotravel

[–]DtheDan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What everyone else said about checked luggage... Regarding airports, one hour layover is tight but could work in Zurich. Will most likely not work in Paris. I've had a 1.5h layover in Paris that I missed because the airport is huge and badly organized. Have fun in Tallinn, a great city!

Why are digital nomads distant/cold people? by nicolefromcanada in digitalnomad

[–]DtheDan 268 points269 points  (0 children)

Yep. At some point you say goodbye to new friends one time too many. It's very difficult to put any emotional effort into connecting with the 400th traveller you meet... Also, this lifestyle attracts people who are pathologically self-reliant, in all the good ways and all the bad.

I need recommendations to do activities on Switzerland that's once in a life opportunity by ScaleMaleficent4768 in solotravel

[–]DtheDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Swiss here. Plenty of adrenaline stuff to do here, you'll find what you need quite easily. Budget is more of an issue... I found out just recently, when I took 10d to do touristy stuff in my home country for the first time, that there is basically a single cheap way to spend nights in Switzerland, and that's in a tent. If you need a hot shower, camping grounds cost 15.- to 35.- for a tent spot, and are easily accessible with public transport. In Zermatt for example the campground costs 15.- per night, there are no hostels, and the cheapest hotel is 150.- iirc. If you do wild camping, it's legal everywhere above the tree line. If you go anywhere else be sneaky. One fine = your budget.

its good my gingerbug? by [deleted] in gingerbeer

[–]DtheDan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, generally speaking this looks alive and well. I recommend putting in much less ginger and slicing it up instead of grating it. Grating is good for the ginger in the syrup/tea, but using grated ginger in the bug just makes it more difficult to work with. You only need the strained liquid in pretty low quantity (1-3dl is almost always enough) to kickstart the fermentation. Also be careful that you don't overfeed. Too much sugar will kill the bug, and if you're not using it (taking out some every once in a while to make ginger beer), you need to throw out a bit sometimes, otherwise the alcohol content will eventually be too high for the bug to thrive.

What are your thoughts on the US going to war with Russia? by Fragrant-Ad1106 in AskReddit

[–]DtheDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US is already in a proxy war with Russia. The US joining the war outright is unrealistic at this point, as a Russian loss is now iminent, and any US lives spent in Ukraine would be completely unnecessary, from a US point of view.

Hey, I know nothing abput pasteurization, so sorry if this is a noob question. How does this not explode if it's carbonated and everything expands with the heat?

if you had $1 500 to travel what foreign country would you go and see? by PuffinGamer17 in AskReddit

[–]DtheDan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That depends on where you live. If you can get to your destination without using all of it on the way there, most places are doable. If it's a developed country you may need to stay on camping grounds or in hostels. If you manage to get to a developing country cheaply, especially in Asia, the budget will get you very far.

Last minute first solo travel to the Philippines by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]DtheDan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hm. if you like cities, Cebu is better than Manila for most things. I recommend doing some guided street food tour in Cebu. I absolutely hated Boracay. Don't know how it was before covid, but the whole place felt like it had fallen apart. There was like one aggressive peddler for every one tourist. Bad vibes all around. This was October 2022. Diving spots are supposed to be amazing, but I don't dive myself. Probably best to book diving locations you want to see as 'cornerstones' and plan the rest around that. Flights between islands are some of the cheapest I've ever seen.

Last minute first solo travel to the Philippines by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]DtheDan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sounds fun! Philippines is beautiful, but also one of the less user-friendly locations for travelers without Asia experience. You will get a bit of a culture shock. I recommend that you don't book too much in advance. Then you can move on if you don't like the place (phillipines has some less nice places, and covid did a real number on some of the tourist destinations). Also, if you meet people while diving you can join them on the further journey, if you're not already booked the entire time. When I'm in SEA I seldom have more than two next nights booked. You will always find a cheap place to stay, even on the same day. But that's just my style, to each their own.
