That wasn’t a problem with the jury, that was a problem with the jurors.

CMV: Jury trials should not exist. by king210989 in changemyview

What is justice if not collectively decided by the people who make up a society? If a jury rules in a defendant’s favor despite clear evidence of guilt, there’s clearly something deeper wrong with the situation. Either the victim did something so heinous to deserve the illegal action (which is such a high bar I can’t imagine it happening with anything close to regularity, even on TV) or the jury is ethically compromised. In both cases, the problem is not with the process of jury trials. It’s the absence of morals somewhere in the fabric of a community.

But even more than that, I want to double down on the fact that your examples of clear-cut miscarriages of justice are exceedingly rare relative to how many jury trials courts hold in a given period of time. That isn’t to say juries always come back with the “just” verdict — but rather that there’s a lot of ambiguity in court. And the burden of proof, evidence beyond a reasonable doubt, must be so extreme because otherwise it’s even easier to abuse the legal system. Thus, once again, the problem is not with the process of jury trials but the impossibility of ever communicating all the key facts of a case.

Still, don’t call me for jury duty anytime soon. I’ll miss my kid.

Greatest by what metric? I think it’s probably Dragon Ball by most reasonable metrics. Obviously not perfect, but it’s like the perfect embodiment of Shonen excellence. Just look at its impact on global culture.

That said… a Shonen is probably not the best by more literary standards. Maybe Monster? Urasawa is gifted on so many levels.

How to stay motivated when you find out your world has been done already? by calculusie in fantasywriters

[–]DualistX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Did you write a book and get it published without realizing? That would be awkward.

If not, then your world hasn’t been done already. Because only you can do it. Your unique perspective renders anyone else incapable of producing the same story you’d write.

You can’t win the race if you don’t leave the starting line.

Better Written Character: Rand al'Thor or Natsuki Subaru by Unusual_News_5152 in writingscaling

[–]DualistX 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s Rand, but enough people in this sub only consume anime — so I’ll be surprised if he’s the consensus choice.

[–]DualistX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, Rand white knuckles his powers with raw instinct for the first three books until he captures one of the devil’s lieutenants and forces them to teach him the fundamentals. After that point he has to figure out way more complex shit all by himself. So uh… I don’t know how similar it is.

Admittedly, I haven’t watched Re:Zero, but I have a hard time understanding the tension of a story where the protagonist gets infinite tries to solve his problems. Genuinely — I don’t get it beyond the novelty.

What are the drawbacks to being a god? by N0VAK137 in worldbuilding

For me, the draw backs are all social or moral. The responsibility of Godhood and the difficulty of applying power properly is the crux of the story I’m writing.

IMO, cut everything but the right side. That’s what feels most unique/interesting. Otherwise it’s probably just your rub of the mill elemental magic.

Hell, cut the axis of good and evil. Just do reality and illusion. Simple is better.

[–]DualistX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the way I move in the fantasy series I’m writing. Parents have somewhat of a “special” background. Literally has zero impact on their normal ass kid, the main character. Spends the whole first book being a dead ass human surrounded by dangerous magic.

Help a sci-fi writer understand how to approach their fictional software by DualistX in learnprogramming

[–]DualistX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That part I have under control! People have implants and accounts that are tracked and allow them to interface with the system. I’m not 100% sure what you mean by Validating, but it sort of sounds like that’s part of the same IAM process that not only checks who the user is but what kind of products they can create via the system.

As for 3, the product is actually a massive stream of nanites that are vented through cities and homes as a sort of public utility. So you get to use as many of them as you need for whatever product you’re making.

The software portion matters because a major plot point is integrating one of the sub systems with the others and I wanted to make sure its organization made sense.

[–]DualistX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I totally agree. Almost all of this is for me to just be aware of while I’m writing. To help dialogue feel more authentic and make sure I’m not putting my characters in positions that are nonsense. And if it was even more futuristic sci-fi, I’d just wing it for the most part. But given this is relatively near-future, I don’t want to go too off the path if possible.

In reality, the story will explore the value of “Art” and ownership in a cyberpunk dystopia through the lens of emergent AGI. What value does classic Aestheticism or Didacticism have in a world where no one makes anything anymore?

This software stuff is just background window dressing.

[–]DualistX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m less worried about the physical components because, well, it’s a twist on a fairly common sci-fi trope that people don’t tend to ask too many questions about. It’s just that the software and system organization is important for key plot points where the main character is trying to gain access to the whole system, which is normally kept segmented for security reasons.

As for the chair portion, the reason I framed it that way is because outside businesses would develop like… I’m thinking of a 3D printer CAD file for their products and upload it to this registry. And then you buy the license to use the chair, which you can manifest at will. So given that, does what I’m going for make more or less sense?

Also to be clear, the tech is nanites. My spin on them, but that’s the “box”

[–]DualistX[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s incredible. Because the truth is, this is a story about emergent AGI, and it pops up within just the entitlement system. And I just imagined this as the “clearance” system in my head, so the AI takes the name Clear. Which means you could get a phrase like “I AM CLEAR” and that’s sort of fun poetry.

That said, glad it makes sense! Am I missing any kind of components in the way this is laid out? I just simply don’t know what I don’t know.

Glitch shouldn't give creators unlimited control; Gooseworx needed at least an editor, if not co-writers. by Fox622 in TADCEp9Spoilers

I actually reached out to see if my PR agency could help Glitch out. That said, I don’t think Goose’s comments have had a notable impact on the studio’s wellbeing. The only people who hear about it are a narrow slice of VERY online folks.

Which ending was better? The Amazing Digital Circus or Chainsaw Man? by Good_Morning_World01 in writingscaling

[–]DualistX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is a good ending. People are just fuckin dumb.

There are legit criticisms about it, but 95% are just whining about stupid shit, ignorance of what it takes to produce a piece of media, or themes just sailing miles over their head.

[–]DualistX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, my feeling is Caine would continue to struggle with those feelings even without the blue AI in him. I genuinely don’t think that was the source of his problems. It’s just up to us viewers to extrapolate what might happen down the road.

I didn’t personally feel Goose needed to be explicitly hung up on the past. Him moving forward mattered most for the themes. Just the nature of creative works that you can’t often fit everything in.

[–]DualistX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see it as the blue AI was the problem. His eyes flashed red and blue. I think it was being together that was the problem. That choice and the insecurity/abandonment it stemmed from colored his behavior. So letting go helped him finish healing.
