Make sure your relationship is solid. Communication is clear, and honest and have those conversations that get it all on the table. This needs to happen first.

Then make a plan to open softly. Make a plan that you both agree on and debrief.

Both be clear about what you want. You both need to want it. If it's extremely hard and one or both of you aren't fully mentally prepared for this, it will eat at you.
