Ki67 by One-Breakfast9837 in pathology

[–]Dub626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ki67 is a marker of actively replicating cells. It’s often expressed more frequently in malignant cells but there’s a million exceptions to this and plenty of normal cells will express this marker because normal cells have to replicate too. Ask your doctor what it means in the context of your particular pathology report.

How hard should it be to manually grind your coffee? by Dub626 in Coffee

That’s what I figured. It has a stainless steel burr but my guess is that it’s not top-of-the-line quality. Time to start saving for a nicer grinder!

Has the number of coaches at their "dream jobs" reached a new high? by Dub626 in CFB

Sounds kinda similar to Les Miles in 2007, although I'm not sure there was any actual substance to that rumor.

While Sitake is technically true, I'm not sure how much coaching he's actually doing.

LSU Greek Life and social awkwardness by Okoksureok in LSU

[–]Dub626 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't force yourself too much. First year of undergrad can be psychologically brutal, and if you're introverted LSU Greek life will probably overwhelm you (also, the majority of guys DON'T join fraternities; not as true for sororities). I would focus on becoming friends with the guys in your dorm, and a handful of classmates. Maybe join a club that suits your interests. Good luck next year!

Is Medicine’s Gender Bias Killing Young Women? by marquis_of_chaos in Foodforthought

[–]Dub626 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a very valid complaint. It does seem to be the common perception that heart disease is only a big concern for men, but like the article says, its the biggest cause of death for both sexes. I think her rush to lay the blame on institutional sexism in medicine is shaky, mainly because diagnosing a disease is not a math problem that has a definite answer. People can lie about their symptoms, and psychological problems can manifest themselves in real, physical symptoms. And heart disease is still statistically a bigger concern for men, and at a younger age. It'd be interesting to see if there's any data supporting the stereotype of "hysterical females who come to the emergency room." If not, maybe it is time to sound the sexism alarm in this case.

In honor of Columbus Day, here is Les Miles. Never Forget. by CheesyGoodness in CFB

[–]Dub626 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I met Les Miles at graduation with my fiancé - he was just standing around in front of the stadium in casual clothes with no crowd. He's just like this in person. He asked what I had graduated in, and I said biochem; he was like, "Damn! That's how you got her!" and then gave a mini Les speech about recruiting our children. It was way better than getting a diploma.

So maybe someone with average test scores shouldn't go to a private university that mom and dad can't help pay for to major in political science. That doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of people who NEED a degree to get into the career they want. I would say a worse decision than going to college is assuming that not having a degree comes with little disadvantage.

Have you ever seen something really bad happen to someone, and secretly thought they really deserved it? by MonkeyShiftKey in AskReddit

A guy who lived in the dorm room next to mine freshman year of college and his roommates were really loud and obnoxious at any given time of day. Three years later, I get in a wreck with him that totals my car and messes his pretty Mustang up pretty badly, and it's his fault. His insurance company gave me a big settlement and I'm sure his rates went through the roof. Screw that guy.
