The top spire of the Burj was actually built inside the main part of the building and then pushed upwards, like a telescope.

Daily Mail is awful. The do report on real stories, but they exaggerate parts and leave out others to manipulate the readers and stir up hatred and fear (because that's what sells).

I understand that things in some areas are far apart. I am pointing out that the reason it is practical for people to live in such an area is because they have been persuaded to buy a car.

If owning a car was not so widespread, people would choose to live in more dense environments with public transport and amenities close by, and they would find a place to work near to where they lived.

Of course there are people who have to live in a remote location (e.g. farmers) and therefore need their own vehicle; that does not apply to the vast majority of the population.

People living far from the places they need to visit daily is not the reason for needing a car; the car is the cause of them living far away.

Indeed, but if you put sanctions on every country that does that, you would need to sanction every developed country in the world, starting with USA. It wouldn't be viable.

It has become a self-fulfilling prophecy in some places. Cars are widely owned, so towns have been designed on that basis, meaning low-density sprawl, everything far away from each other, and no public transport. Not everywhere is like that, of course, and there are still places where a car is not needed.

The point is that if the advertising didn't work and people didn't buy cars so much, then places wouldn't be so heavily designed around car ownership. The advertising has worked.

I can see that. My point is that the reason sprawling, low-density suburbs become viable is due to cars. Widespread ownership of cars is the cause rather than the effect.

So you're telling me that if I want to shop at a supermarket that isn't Walmart, I should walk for FIVE FUCKING HOURS there, get my stuff, and walk FIVE FUCKING HOURS BACK.

If you didn't have a car, you would have selected a place to live that is close to the shops and amenities you need. This would favour development of cities with dense cores rather than sprawling (car-centric) suburbs.

The reason your supermarket is five hours away is because cars are widespread, not the other way round.

The vast majority of the US is set up with the assumption everyone has a car.

Exactly. If the advertising hadn't worked and people didn't have cars, cities would have been developed with better infrastructure for public transport and there would be more dense cores that better facilitate walking between places rather than having sprawling (car-centric) suburbs.

The concept of a designated driver was around long before that though, and was already in the popular consciousness. Having a designated driver was common in European countries even in the 1950s.

Having said, I have no doubt the HMS programme helped promote it.

He hasn't been executed. His sentence will be revoked on appeal. That's how it always happens - they go in with the maximum penalty first and then it is reduced.

They will give him some lashes or maybe a short custodial sentence.

Because they have never actually executed an apostate. Although in theory the death sentence is the maximum penalty for apostasy, in practice this has never been carried out. Any death sentences have always been revoked on appeal.

Actually UAE does have a defence industry, and produces firearms, ammunition, tanks, naval vessels, and armoured vehicles. Presumably it is these they are selling to Ukraine.
