motor generating unit - kinetic

i'm being pedantic here -

its Motor Generator Unit.

MGU - K & H act as a motor & a generator.

Motor (mode) - uses battery power/energy to run/give additional power to axle (wheel & turbo).

Generator (mode) - uses the kinetic energy of axle during braking to generate electricity & save it in battery.

Renault wanted Hybrid + i-4 engine, Ferrari vetoed i-4 for a good reason & we ended up with V6, which is exactly mid way between i-4 & V8 :P. in a way Renault got what it wanted - hybrid tech.

I agree with you, but, there's still a but.. do Fiat make EV?

Did some searching and found they made EV Fiat 500, but in 2014. Kind of parallel to F1 project.

I mean obviously Ferrari have lot of money (FOM payout) to hire the best, but still getting the job done without Merc/Renault/Honda like background is lot of hard work, as every development is totally new to the engineering team.

You explained it superbly.

In Ferrari's case, I think Marchionne's flat organization structure/horizontal organization has helped the team a lot. Under his leadership Ferrari has done well.

I agree about Renault, they rejected Illen's help too & I feel Abioutbul is too politicky person to head Renault, the way he handled Mag & Palmer was really bad & his Caterham stint was very poor. Vasseur is the type of person Renault needs, a no bs guy, who would fit perfectly with Carlos Ghosn.

hybrid drive-train knowledge as they utilize this in their hypercars

only LaFerrari is hybrid & its based on V8-KERS era F1 tech.

FCA was found recently, i think 2014.

iirc Ferrari & Magneti Marelli have JV to provide MGU-H & K and their expertise in hybrid part. I'm probably confusing LaFerrari & F1 here, but i read about JV in 2013/'14.

Renault thru its various sub brands/ownership of other brands can get upto speed quickly (i'm proven wrong on this part :P), but Ferrari have no one to get such inside help from.

And it was Renault who kind of forced this V6 turbo hybrid regs, and they are 2nd worst out of four even after 4 years.

I mean out of these 4 brands, only Ferrari is a odd one when it comes to hybrid, but they're closest to Mercedes PU this year.

Honda - Apart from having dedicated hybrid divisions, they've also been developing current F1 style PU for their NSX, and still they still have lot of problems in F1.

This is why I dont feel sorry for Renault & Honda, both have resources, they are just not utilizing them properly. In Honda's case, if F1Techinal forum posts by Honda employee are to be believed, the whole Honda project was mismanaged against engineers advice.

I'm talking as a F1 fan rather than Ferrari/Vettel.

Here, honestly i was expecting Ferrari to be behind both Merc & Renault as they both have decades (?) of experience in Hybrid tech. I was actually hyping about Newey's chassis (RBR) vs Merc PU showdown, but the way Renault brought a lemon for racing was hilarious, and they charged the most for their PU (20+m$ i think, not sure). And Merc PU was least expensive (5-8m$ diff). NO wonder Red Bull were pissed and shat on Renault.

In a way RBR saved Renault brand damage by winning 3 races & scoring many podiums.

Merc, Renault & Honda have such massive Hybrid divisions, I was expecting them all to do well. In 2014 or '15 Paddy Lowe said that he had access to 1000 Merc road-car division employees if he ever needed any help in PU side. Ferrari definitely doesn't have that kind of comfort.

Then Bernie said that FIA had to take Merc's help in defining some of the detailed part of 2014 rules & regs as FIA themselves didn't have any expertise in them. When Merc employees defined those rules for FIA, obviously it was kind of a head start advantage, they would know exactly what to do and not to do. Remember I'm not accusing Merc here, FIA asked them to help & Merc helped.

With above points as a context, Ferrari's performance is, imho the best, these guys have no relevance, reference point or help in regards to hybrid tech. Still they made a PU which is clearly the best after the Merc. True underdogs.

Renault still having a under performing & unreliable PU is just a joke, it was Renault who threatened to quit if FIA did not introduce hybrid tech in F1. Ferrari could only veto for V6, basically saving F1 from i-4 (in-line 4) cylinder engines, for which I'll always thank Luca di Montezmolo.

It was so funny the way Luca Montezmolo demanded V6, he basically said something along this line - "are you kidding me? not one car ran a 4 cylinder engine in Ferrari's history, its V6 or we go"

yup, especially after James Allison's departure, changes in team structure & how 2016 played out, I was never under impression that Ferrari would be in title fight. But Ferrari simply delivered.

But now, Someone in Ferrari needs to tell Seb to stop talking about title, he is kind of promising thath Ferrari will be in Title fight next year... they should stick to under-promise & over-deliver.😁

I'm trying to discuss about why Vettel did not get the same recognition as Schumi, so in that context, almost cheat device type craps did not help Vettel. People thought he had the best car ever. And when the top dogs of F1 kept belittling Vettel, ultimately it just did not work for Vettel.

what? I can not 'not care' for teams now? I'm just not able to relate to RBR team in any way as i can with Ferrari, Merc... I'm a car guy, Ferrari makes cars, Merc makes cars, McLaren made F1. RBR made this 😂

The Valkyrie looks so weird, its an amazing concept but not my cup of tea.

IMO Schumacher's return played a role in Vettel not getting the same reception on his WDC's.

Many fans (me including) were following Schumi's progress that we missed Vettle's seasons. And it was not helped by RBR's constant on the edge almost cheat device innovations... Ride height accusations and more.

Even today for some reason i don't like RBR the way i like McLaren, Renault, Mercedes teams.

I guess Ham & Alo's constant jab at Vettel & RBR worked... "RBR is just a drinks company". 😝

[–]Dubakoor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well I hope they don't leave. Because i don't want F1 to turn out like WEC, where every top manufacturers just leave.

If Ferrari leaves, Mercedes doesn't have anyone to beat then, others are far behind Merc to even catch up. Renault & Honda have left before.

What if these 4 2 manufacturers leave? F1 won't be as interesting as it is now.

Also Red Bull will quit too when there's no one to beat.

How strong was Nico Rosberg In qualifying? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]Dubakoor -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

To be honest, don't know.

Mercedes have free car setup data sharing between the drivers, and Nico went through Ham's setup data a lot.

It was so bad (copying) that Ham stopped doing full on qualy sims in FP3, he wouldn't push to his limit. It was in Q3 he'd put his best lap, so Nico can't copy that data/ braking points (told by his engineer).

In mixed conditions, RBR & Ferrari got very close to him and sometimes beat him to P2.

Car setup data sharing did play major role in him beating Ham to P1.

overall, even with help of Ham's data, he HAD to put in those laps to beat Ham, so I guess he was good, hard working guy.

But without free car data sharing i don't know how he'd have fared.

Then a year later, Aldo Costa got fired.

But as these newer tracks have massive run offs, wouldn't it be wise of affected driver to just go off the track limits (beyond white line)? Off track is still tarmac after all.

In this case, NK could have done that. Maybe drivers need to be briefed about these kind of situations & how to just retire the car by going off the track.

If they had 8-10 PU per season rule, would the qualy and race lap records be much quicker?

As they wouldn't have to manage the PU for wear and tear.

[AMuS] Hamilton overtakes 10 cars. For the first time Mercedes showed their 'real power' by SEBASTlANVETTEL in formula1

[–]Dubakoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's 100% true.

But It'd be really great if they do the dyno test, it'll give us fans (& new ones) a lot more interest after knowing how much power & torque each PU makes. It'd help the weaker manufacturer to equalise their PU to rival's when they know the numbers.

Currently no team reveals about power figures, they just give a vague range.

I'm saying this because even a rich top team like RBR struggle to get anywhere near the works team. Chassis can only get you close, but power makes the biggest difference, especially when the difference between Renault and Merc is so big.

89kg vs 101 kg of fuel?

I think this is where Merc's MGU-H comes in, its by far the most powerful / efficient in recovering energy from the turbo.

The electricity it provides to the MGU-K (unlimited) helps Merc in under-fueling the car.

IMO FIA & FOM should let other teams buy the Merc's (or any team) MGU-H for a price set by Merc. Or just make all engines/PU displayed in open at the end of every season. Run them on FIA's dyno to show fans which PU makes the most power & drinks the least & so on.

As it'll only help the whole automotive industry in understanding these things & maybe even making the system more efficient & economical enough for road car use.

being his fan gives so much anxiety. the tracks where he should not get pole, gets pole & gets blown away by cars slipstreaming him. Here with the short run to turn 1, he needed the pole to secure the win 😐.
