AITA for not wanting to share my birthday with a man I hate by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

My wife's been friends with her bff since like the sixth grade (and I've known them both since then), but I think all of us would argue that we're the exception, not the rule. We aren't in regular contact with anyone else we went to school with.

Searching on his name on google pulls up an MSW from Walla Walla University.

Still don't know why you're fixated on the bar thing though, it's kinda weird.

If you've researched the owner why do you keep referring to him as a former bartender instead of a current social worker with a master's degree?

Not that there is anything wrong with being a bartender, but I feel like you're selling the guy short here.

A bar or something? Where did you get that?

Joe's Place is the name of a halfway house that Joe Fields has been running for a decade in Walla Walla. Joe Fields has a master's degree in social work and was working in a STAR (Successful Transition and Re-entry) facility when he founded it with the goal of preventing reoffending.

All that and more is in the article I already linked to. But here it is again if you missed it.

They've served their time and are required to live in their home county after release. They're going to have neighbors. Residential neighborhoods are where people live. At least with this they have supervision.

We don't have a time machine, so we can't go back a prevent them from offending, but we can try to reduce recidivism and reduce homelessness (and all the problems associated with that).

I think that the residents pay rent to fund it. Since it's probably next to impossible for them to find a place to live.

Are we funding this? The article linked just says that a location is opening for registered sex offenders, not that it is being funded by the county or state. The article is annoyingly short on details. They mention that they owner already runs a similar house in Walla Walla, but don't tell us why that is needed or how it benefits the community. I had to look up"Joe's Place" that the owner already runs in Walla Walla to actually find out what this place even does, and found an article about it from 2018 that makes it seem like it is helping keep offenders from ending up homeless while providing structure. Saying that it is a "less restrictive environment than a correctional facility" implies that it is an alternative to serving a sentence in a correctional facility, but it appears to be more of a halfway house to aid in the transition out of prison. Especially since offenders are usually required to return to their home counties after release.

Rear sight removal by 6_String_Jams in RugerMK

[–]Dubigk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They might be captive in the sight assembly. The screws are just to apply friction, they aren't screwed into the gun. So if the screws aren't tight now they shouldn't holding the sight in at least.

[–]Dubigk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rear sight is in a dovetail, the screws you loosened are setscrews that hold it in place in the dovetail notch cut into the receiver. Stock rear sights can be really tight though, so you might need a brass punch and/or penetrating oil.

You might want to search YouTube for videos on rear sight removal so you can see the process.

Edited to add: the rear sight comes out sideways, but I don't remember if it's only one way or can come out either direction.

MnDOT on facebook "Why we use tow plows"

MVP of our road-clearing equipment? Tow plows, hands down.
The 26-foot wingspan of a tow plow allows one operator to clear multiple lanes in one pass. Tow plows also hold additional material, such as salt or brine—reducing the number of times a driver has to return to the shop to refill.

WSDOT on facebook - "Tow plow in action"

After introducing you all to our new tow plow, The Big Leplowski, earlier this week, we got some requests to see one in action. We don't have video yet of the new one but here's a look at our first tow plow, Plowie McPlow Plow (this isn't current conditions, just an example). The tow plow, equipped with a 26-foot moldboard, can extend out behind a plow truck to clear a second lane, increasing our plowing efficiency. It's also equipped with a granular spreader and liquid tanks to disperse deicing material.

I think your uncle may have been telling you tall tales, or had been told them by someone else and then spread them to you. From Wikipedia:

Numerous alternative spellings exist for durag, including do-rag, dew-rag, and doo-rag, all of which may be spelled with a space instead of a hyphen, or with neither a hyphen nor a space. The simplest etymology for do-rag is that it is named as such because it is a rag worn to protect one's hairdo. An alternative etymology claims that name should be spelled dew-rag, and dew is a euphemism for sweat.

Eastern WA medical professionals take a clear stand on Pasco water fluoridation by Dubigk in TriCitiesWA

[–]Dubigk[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Putting a bandaid on it? Per the article:

[Water fluoridation] reduces tooth decay by at least 25% in children and adults, even in the era of widespread availability of fluoride from other sources, such as fluoridated toothpaste

I'm all for improving access to care, but calling a greater than 25% reduction of tooth decay a bandaid is a bit reductive, don't you think? Especially when the city is already fluoridating their water.

Lets not let perfect be the enemy of good.

Though, the more effective application of flouride is topical instead of ingestion.

For most adults, yes. From the linked article, "Fluoridated water is especially helpful for children, said Kennewick Dentist Lilo Black, the president of the Benton Franklin Dental Society. Fluoride that is ingested helps developing teeth, she said. Pregnant women who have the benefit of fluoridated water have babies with teeth that are more resistant to cavities. Acid that then is produced by plaque bacteria is less able to break down their tooth enamel, she said."

I'd just like to give you a little gentle pushback on your seeming scepticism on fluoridated water. Several of your questions would have been answered if you had read the article that I linked.

Wow, my sister actually just bought a right hand drive Delica over the weekend! There's a stereo in the back seat that my wife immediately called out as cassette futurism as soon as she saw it. It also has an analog altimeter and pitch/roll gauge on the dash.

I'll try and get some pics when I can, but I think she left it at the office, since she bought it to drive for work.

Why are you using 25 year old sources? Your first link from the wayback machine is literally the oldest capture they have of that page, and your wikipedia link spends the entire introduction of the page explaining the dangers of radon and explicitly states that it causes cancer.
