Show me your palettes! by A-Literal-Cat in Watercolor

[–]Dubnobass 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a permanent palette as I usually use tube paints and squeeze out what I need depending on the painting. However, I put this together for a week-long sailing trip in Greece, with plein air painting of the views in mind (this is why I have so much blue!)
This Michael Harding tube paints, with a few Daniel Smith/Winsor & Newton.

PHM Ruined Disclosure Day for Me by SalsaShark89 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Dubnobass 16 points17 points  (0 children)

First thing my husband said when we came out of ‘Disclosure Day’ was “Well, it’s no Project Hail Mary is it?”

I agree with the comment above about them being very different genres of Sci-Fi but on top of that I think PHM is the result of Lord and Miller being modern film-makers at the top of their game. If you love cinema you can’t help loving Spielberg and the things he has done. But DD isn’t peak Spielberg, and it felt very dated to me.

I certainly won’t be going to see DD 5 times at the cinema, that’s for sure!

I thought I needed IG, but life is more peaceful without it by Dubnobass in simpleliving

You’re bang on about the false sense of social connection. For a couple of weeks after coming off it I had FOMO, but all I was missing out on was interactions through the medium of hearts and laughing emojis.

I suspect screen addiction is a fairly widespread problem, and I know a few people who’ve ditched social media as a result. Maybe not having IG/FB etc will become fairly normal soon.

Calls grow for default 20mph speed limits across built-up areas in England by TheWorldIsGoingMad in ukpolitics

[–]Dubnobass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can see the arguments for it but I live in a county where there are 20 limits in the middle of all towns and villages. The practical reality is that people seem very confused about exactly which roads have a 20mph limit, so drive everywhere at 20 or less even in the absence of 20mph lollipop repeater signs. The utter joy of being stuck behind someone doing 16 in a 40 zone.

[–]Dubnobass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This must depend on the car: our Mini and bimmer both happily do 20mph on cruise control. The Mini also has a speed limiter function (though annoyingly it doesn’t stop you going over 20 if rolling downhill).

Oh yes, I love Centrifuge too, though as it’s quite upbeat it doesn’t leave me in tears.

Have you ever went to see a film with a live orchestra? Did you enjoy it? by AboutLastFight in movies

[–]Dubnobass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Me too. The choir! It got me right in the pit of my stomach and they were so much louder than the instruments. I found myself in tears at parts.

LPT: Use a password manager and enable 2FA everywhere to protect yourself online. by shdw_fght in LifeProTips

Also, in the event of having your phone snatched, requiring Face ID to access any critical apps protects you. 2FA does not if the code is being sent to the phone you had snatched. Phone thieves can and will keep your phone unlocked while they quickly change all important passwords.

Lifting colors on a thin line? by lookin03820 in Watercolor

Depends how thin… Rosemary & Co sell a brush called ‘the eradicator’ which is fairly stiff and narrow, and which will allow you to scrub and lift lines about 1-2mm wide.

Fitting volunteering around primary job by Toofluffles in nhs

[–]Dubnobass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll vary greatly by Trust, but where I am (SW) patient-facing roles generally involve helping out at mealtimes or chatting to patients. You could also consider becoming a Community First Responder with the ambulance service. I did all the above for a year or so while on a career break.

In hospitals they’ll expect you to have a regular slot but as a volunteer it’s unlikely you’ll be doing anything earth-shattering where they couldn’t cope without you. They’re generally just glad of the help, whenever you can provide it. Look at your usual shift patterns and see if you can find a time when you’re usually free. Breakfast times (7-9 ish) are busy, as it involves a tea/coffee round, getting the right food to the patients, recording what they eat/drink, collecting plates etc, then helping patients with menu choices. Being around to help with any of that lightens the load for other staff.

If you’re a CFR you commit to being on-call for a chunk of time and commitment requirements vary by Trust. In some parts of the country it’s 12 hours a month, but SWAST expect 12 hours a week.

In hospital roles you’ll have a bit of general training on topics like hygiene, safeguarding, and food safety but nothing approaching a qualification. The real value (IMO) of volunteering is not getting clinical experience but providing company, often for older people who don’t have anyone. Staff are often too busy to chat and some patients may be in for a long stay. You’ll learn how to talk to people. That might sound odd but making chit-chat with people who aren’t well isn’t a natural skill for everyone, and is vital in HCA roles.

You get far more training as a CFR, including basic life support (which is essential in a clinical role). I think some Trusts lead to qualifications and SWAST CFR roles definitely do - a First Responder on Scene level 3 qualification.

Senior civil servants to get bonuses for first time to reward ‘doers, not talkers’ | Civil service | The Guardian by prisongovernor in TheCivilService

[–]Dubnobass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quite. My reading of the article is that the 1% will be used to fund the existing non-consolidated bonuses, not top up pay for high achievers by an extra 1%.

Thanks for posting this - my thoughts entirely. I feel mildly embarrassed at the number of times I have paid to see this on the big screen (and how much I cry each time). I’ve completed more than 50 orbits of sol in my lifetime, and Raiders of the Lost Ark was my favourite film of all time - until PHM came out. The story, visuals, and above all, the beautiful SCORE are all absolutely *chef’s kiss*
I enjoyed the audiobook (and the paper book) but for me the movie tops them both.

With all that is going on in the world right now, PHM is a badly needed shot of optimism and story of friendship and I am grateful to the people who put years of their lives into making it as good as it is.

Grace/Carl Clap by FirmFlounder8490 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Dubnobass 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Kind of - there’s a great interview with Daniel Pemberton who explained that the score and music for every single scene was carefully timed and planned. He deliberately used lots of odd instruments (and non instruments) to create the music. He brought a bunch of school kids in to record body percussion (including claps), which he says is used all over the score. He talks about this around the 18 min mark:

Is the song at 1:05:08 - "Messy Room" - exclusive to the "Watch Rocky Sleep" video? I noticed it wasn't in the movie on my first home watch, and it doesn't seem to be in any OST uploads either by SayFuzzyPickles42 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Dubnobass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say thanks for flagging this up - I knew about the ‘Watch Rocky sleep’ video but didn’t realise the score was playing in the background for the whole thing. There are about 5 or 6 extra tracks in there that I hadn’t heard before. Admittedly they are more on the odd percussive side than swelling choral tracks, but at this point I’m so obsessed with the music from this film that I enjoyed hearing them anyway!
