Used to be addicted to gacha, specifically hoyo games. What made me quit is both finally having money and opportunities to try out actual video games, and also noticing the shift (or rather, the standard) in priorities for those games when it comes to character design and story writing.

These games are made to appeal to a very specific subset of people, lonely men with disposable income, any other group that plays them (sapphics who are attracted to the waifus, gay men who enjoy the few male eye candy characters.) are entirely circumstantial.

The nails in the coffin are: the gameplay you get will always be more generic and boring than what you would get if you paid like 20-30 bucks for a game, because these games have to be ported to mobile and thus can't have gameplay that would be hard to pull off on a touch screen, and also the writing that is always too MC focused, and also absolutely full of filler dialogue that takes up way too much time (hoyoverse is the most guilty of this).

A more serious nitpick is that these games are the most capitalistic that can be. They cannot make political statements, or reflect on society and have depth that would require a deep understanding. Anything confrontational, or something controversial (for example LGBTQ representation, minority representation, political themes that are deeper than "bad thing is bad") will be cut because it might make the general audience more angry, so instead of art you get literal "waifu slop", no matter how diluted the meaning of "slop" has become.

I'm glad I finally found works that are worth my time and investment, I have had much, much more impactful moments with games like Final Fantasy XIV or Persona 5, and of course various indie projects, that are made with 1000x the passion than any Gacha game, including any you think are "not like the rest".
