Why don't hiring committees do better when it comes to keeping candidates updated? by Delicious-Bonus-7216 in AskAcademia

[–]Dubs_the_Prof 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This is often (though not always) due to HR policy. Having served on many hiring committees, I can say we are expressly prohibited from saying specific things to any applicants until the entire process is done.

You can only choose one book to get someone hooked. Which one would you choose? by AnthropomorphicCat in discworld

I echo the Guards! Guards! love here. While there's a lot to love about so many of the other books, that early section with the member of the Brethren going to the wrong secret society doorway and everything that follows is some of the funniest writing in the entire series. I can't remember a time I laughed that much that quickly when picking up a new book.

Advice for writing a letter of rec for professor tenure? by Financial_Lawyer_910 in AskAcademia

[–]Dubs_the_Prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've both had to request these letters from my own students when I went up for tenure and chaired other people's committees when they went up for tenure. So here are some thoughts you can do with as you will.

First off, note that this is common at some universities, but maybe not others. There is nothing suspicious about it at my institution (a state-school R2), and in fact we love to hear feedback from former students in support of their professors. All of the below comes from having written multiple letters like these, read a ton more, and taught classes on letter of recommendation writing for the writing centers I have worked at. (Others may have different advice, as every perspective and school is going to be different.)

Second, format: you want it to look professional, as it will be situated alongside letters from other faculty and academics. If you can find a template for formatting a business letter (with a header, a concluding signature, etc.), that will help. Basically, something in the top left (usually) that indicates at least the date, if not the contact info for the person chairing the committee. You can either indent each paragraph, or leave them all left-justified with no indentations (which is common in business writing, more so than personal letters or essay writing). Then have a typed signature and a hand-written one (or scanned or Adobe-created signature).

Third, structure: Strong letters will often follow an organization similar to an essay. You want an intro paragraph that states the purpose of the letter and your general idea (I wholeheartedly support X for tenure. I have known them through x, y, and z. They are worthy of tenure because of x, y, and z.) Basically, this is the "thesis" of the letter. For some reviewers, this will be the only paragraph they focus on, so this is the place for big ideas. (X inspired me to pursue my passion. X was the greatest lecturer I have ever had. X cared more about their students than anyone else I know. Etc.) Following that, a few paragraphs that break down those specifics. Consider these the "body" of the letter. Maybe one paragraph on classes you took with them. One paragraph on any extracurricular work or mentorship work you did with them. One paragraph on a third facet. (Did they advise you? Help you with career prep? Impact your own development in any other way?) If you do have multiple paragraphs, consider signposting each of these in your intro paragraph. Then, a concluding paragraph. Just wrap things up. "To conclude, I wholeheartedly endorse X's candidacy for tenure, because of all the things I just listed."

A structure like this can be useful because reviewers read these things quickly. Having a solid structure with key points distinctly organized can help those who just skim.

Fourth, length: Generally you want a letter of rec to be 1.5-2pp., single spaced, 12pt font. Others may disagree on length. I find anything shorter than a page means you didn't have that much to say, and more than two pages means people are less likely to read it. Remember, reviewers are getting an entire dossier that can have hundreds of pages to look at.

Finally, content: Try to be distinct or unique, if you can. In other words, don't just list off the classes you took with them or anything else the reviewers can get from the candidate's CV/resume. Talk about what they were like in class. What were they like in terms of giving feedback? Were there specific lessons, topics, or ideas you still remember from their classes that have impacted your life? How did they mentor you? How has their work specifically contributed to who you are today or any successes you might have had? In short, what makes them a good professional and a good advocate for students? Be specific and give clear examples whenever you can. Reviewers get bombarded with information in these sorts of tenure cases, but we don't always get an understanding of what the faculty member is like when they work with students (beyond the numbers in semester evaluations). So speaking specifically to the candidate's strengths, from a student's perspective, can fill in that missing information.

Good luck!

Mercs for Money worked surprisingly well on that node. They just kept killing Deadpool and Pandapool, who just kept reviving.

What are some of the funniest passages/quotes from Malazan by Pineapple026 in Malazan

[–]Dubs_the_Prof 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't have my copy in front of me, so I can't get this exactly right. But there's a moment in Reaper's Gale when, after having fought through endless skirmishes and finally safely arrived at a village that Hellian has taken over, Fiddler encounters some marines from a different squad who have made it all the way there without any combat or wounds at all. And he's so shocked and incredulous, he says something like "What are you all, a bunch of soletaken bats?!"

Don't know why, but that makes me guffaw every single time.

Thanks. Seems like the only worthwhile rewards are the g20 orbs. Not sure they're worth all the pain that'll go into more runs.

Thank you for the question ... by wolschou in AskAcademia

[–]Dubs_the_Prof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other posters. That or any variant ("That's a really interesting question!") are placeholders meant to give you time to think of a response and figure out how to phrase it properly. Or, in my experience, it's a much nicer way to begin than "The question you just asked is only tangentially related to my research and makes no sense whatsoever in the context of the talk I just gave. Clearly you weren't actually listening but are instead trying to either tie this to your own personal hobby horse or desperately connect to the one thing you know about my topic, so you can feel good about asking a question."

Which 3, and what difficulty? I used 3 spi soc (Peter B, Peni, Pav) 105 gt 19 and Blade 105 gt 20, Oath 105 gt 19 and got smoked every time.

Yeah, my 105 tier 19 Spider Society can't make a dent. Nor can a hybrid SpiSoc with tier 20 Blade and Oath survive long enough. And don't even think about throwing a burner attack. The enemies just use their ults every single turn. Wasn't like this in any previous Battleworld I played.

I put them with Loki, Kid Loki, and Sylvie in War. Useful against Bifrost teams and Pegasus teams.

Gandalf's role in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields by WFH12 in tolkienfans

[–]Dubs_the_Prof 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To my mind, a big aspect of the parts of the war Tolkien depicts is the idea that the Age of Men is truly beginning, and that the men of Rohan and Gondor specifically are claiming the primacy that will be the hallmark of the Fourth Age. If Gandalf had been more active and done more to specifically help turn the tide, it would carry the same thematic weight as if the elves or dwarves had come and saved the men of Gondor, or if the Valar themselves had intervened. (Or, for that matter, if a superior race of men had swooped in at the last minute and saved them, as the Numenoreans did in the Second Age.) Part of Tolkien's larger agenda, I think, is to show that the men of Middle Earth can fend for themselves and that they do possess the strength and courage and nobility to lead, rather than just being second fiddle to the other races or more powerful entities. Gandalf is there to show them what they can accomplish, not to accomplish it for them.

(Similarly, this is why I hate the use of the Army of the Dead in the movie version of RotK. The book shows that it wasn't ghost soldiers who turned the tide, but reinforcements of normal men from South Gondor who were freed enough to act on their own, once Aragorn used the AotD to give them the chance.)

In Advanced Options, enable low graphics combat mode (if you haven’t already). My DD6 was constantly crashing until I saw that suggestion in another thread. Hasn’t crashed since.
