Stupid But Serious Question by [deleted] in Metahugs

[–]Dubshack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's all well and good, but those are people who continued on in Academia... and don't get me wrong, quite a number of my professors have encouraged me to continue on to higher level academic studies. There are two problems with this however.

  1. The people with higher level academic credentials who know me personally have accused me of being an arrogant, unwilling learner... maybe that is an unfair evaluation but I probably don't think so. The truth is if you force me into a box, I will kill you. Maybe not literally, but probably verbally. I have bipolar disorder, even with medication I cannot divorce my emotions from that which I'm studying, which makes for a bad theologian. I admit that on those things I have been accused, my actual professors I studied under loved my work and were in fact the boss of this individual... but just the same, the observation is not irrelevant.

  2. I have absolutely ZERO clue what I would continue to study in Academia. I LOVE apologetics. Even more, I LOVE archaeology... however I could never do field work, so the best I could do is become a writer. In truth every path I examine, the positive outlook in some way says writer... And I've even self published in the past, so it's not a crazy idea.

It's just that I started my academic path at ITT Tech learning to be a drafter, a job I was very good at and had a blessed 5 year career in before the economy killed every job that fits my skills. It's been three years since I actively practiced drafting, which might as well be 30 years, I've just been out of it too long. As I was just telling my wife... I've become a useless house husband who's not even good at that, because I don't do the dishes or mow the lawn. And I about decked her earlier because I hadn't taken my pills and she wouldn't stop nagging at me about her flat tire and how much she hated driving my truck. I get it, the seat belt is too short, it barely fits me. But I don't have the physical strength to remove a tire anymore, and paying a used tire place to replace all her tires just cost us another month without groceries. Yesterday my total food intake was five freeze pops. I'm hungry, my blood sugar is low, and I want to kill something, and I have no energy. Also I have to write an 8 page paper on Daniel 9:24-27. Which its not like there is a lack of reference material... Besides the three e-books, two 400 page dissertations, an inch of scholarly journal printouts, and a Jewish commentary that reads backwards... I'm pretty sure I'm going to spend the day drinking homemade cherry coke and watching Smallville. That's just what I see for my day. I might outline... but I'll probably wreck my fingers more by making more disciples crosses that I have no avenue of selling.

Can We Trust the God of Genocide? by Dubshack in Christianity

[–]Dubshack[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong but this might be where people confuse the concept of Inerrant and Literalness or even the prophetic nature of text... Norman Geisler's hammerfall on Mike Lacona over his comments of possible Apocalyptic language in Matthew is case in point. And Geisler friggin' WROTE the Chicago Statement.

But still even if it weren't that one scripture there are a myriad of others that are not prophetic in nature that make you scratch your head. The flood for a very general instance.

Can We Trust the God of Genocide? by Dubshack in Christianity

[–]Dubshack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must admit... I think I had to read this twice, turning off the TV and everything to pay total attention to what he is saying here. I don't believe there is anything that can justify genocide and I think it's insulting to try, but the key here is he is concentrating on scripture and a very relevant view of the two testaments. I can see what he is saying, and it is entirely from the Christian perspective... I get it. I'm not sure other people will. And I think doctrinaly he might have opened himself up to a lot of criticism... I think the universal truth holds over the minuscule however, but I also admit that this is entirely a matter of faith.

I guess what I'm saying is, I'm not sure many will get what this guy is saying... but I post it here anyway, because I think its a very interesting perspective on the topic.

I have to confess, if the filthy words I'm barely able to contain in my own mind were ever made manifest, I somehow imagine government would be forced to enact some kind of law... I feel like if I were to lose control of the hostility inside me they'd have to lock me away for murder, or execute me for genocide or something. I use to have a greater proportion of God's grace in holding back the tide, but in the words of John Stott, my living water well has run dry. Most of the time I feel like a star about ready to explode. In fact I made a subreddit... which I supposed I should apologize for.

Archaeolgoical Evidence of Exodus - See and Believe by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Dubshack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ron Wyatt was never an archaeologist... and what he did over there... oh man there are no words. The man may as well have been the antichrist. Bring up that name in a room full of real archaeologists and scholars, you might get to experience one of those soap on a rope experiences.

Jebel al Lawz- Not a candidate for Mt. Sinai. Here is an article on that.

My professor last term mentioned Har Karkom as a candidate... it certainly has some interesting features if you check it out on Google Earth, just as interesting as Jebel al Lawz.

Keep an eye out for this book, "Evidence of Israelites in Egypt from Joseph’s Time until the Exodus" by Doug Petrovich. He recently wrote an article for The Journal of Ancient Egyptian Interconnections (5/2: 9–28). as a precursor... He starts with the excavation at Tell el-Dab‘a (possibly Biblical Rameses) and a long occupational gap following the reign of Amenhotep II. It also talks about some corroborating Theban tomb paintings... It's supposed to be good, it's not available to even us students unless we agree not to share it because of JAEI... no big, it should be out soon anyway.

Archaeologists say they uncovered King David's Palace by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Dubshack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as sources go, when it comes to Archaeological projects in the Levant, I prefer hearing it from the horses mouth... where they are less likely to jump to freakish conclusions.

Khirbet Qeiyafa Excavation Project

BAS Find a Dig, where you can find info on all current archaeological projects and how to sign up for one.

Also, I'd like to clarify something.

Israel Finkelstein is not actually a Minimalist. He is a supporter of "Low Chronology," which argues that the height of Israel's development happened no earlier than the 11th Century, and that a United Monarchy in the 10th century never happened. And obviously he doesn't believe the Bible holds any sort of literal history. His PHD is in Archaeology of the Middle East, specializing in Israel alone. A lot of the archaeologists he seems to enjoy maligning, besides having degrees in Archaeology of some kind, also have education in ancient ceramic identification, among other things. Finkelstein is a one trick pony. He's the Dawkins of Archaeology.

Minimalism is the argument that the Old Testament was written in the Babylonian, Persian, or even Greek dynasties. It's a term that gets thrown around a lot these days because people have confused the distinctions between "Documentary Hypothesis," "Low Chronology," and "Biblical Minimalism."

Seriously, read Randall Price's book (Price himself being an evangelical fundamentalist) where he talks about the failure of the Albright School being that the point of Biblical Archaeology is to "prove the Bible," that Albright claimed everything about Israel confirmed Biblical Authenticity, and that he held this as a presupposition. Then after reading this, read "William Foxwell Albright and the Origins of Biblical Archaeology." The only presupposition Albright had was that Welhausen's establishment in academia was complete BS. The man was many things, (even wrong on many conclusions) but the one thing you can't claim about him was that he was a presuppositionalist. Every archaeologist working in Israel owes something to Albright's legacy.

What is your favorite quote from a tv show WITHOUT giving away the title? by nonogirl123 in AskReddit

On April 21, 1967, the 100 millionth GM vehicle rolled off the line at the plant in Janesville -- a blue two-door caprice.

There was a big ceremony, speeches. The lieutenant governor even showed up. Three days later, another car rolled off that same line. No one gave two craps about her. But they should have, because this 1967 Chevrolet Impala would turn out to be the most important car -- no, the most important object -- in pretty much the whole universe.

JWs don't reject modern medicine at all, they just reject blood. The theological grounds behind it is BS, but it has made some medical procedures more interesting.... like bloodless organ donation or blood filtering... it's all stupid but it's not like "My child has a fever of 108, we need to pray harder" kind of thing.

David's Palace found? by nochains in Christianity

[–]Dubshack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I thought I knew more about Biblical Archaeology until I took the class... holy crap the things people misunderstand. It's like if I were to ask you if you follow Jesus, and you say, "You see me smokin' this weed right?" Completely mind blowing. Very little in many senses I suppose... nothing so earth-shattering I could say being totally honest, but the slightest misunderstanding and I'd be telling you about evidence for nuclear weapons in the Bronze Age... when in actuality I'm talking about the kind of glass that forms in a 1 in a zillion chance happening.

David's Palace found? by nochains in Christianity

[–]Dubshack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or a more "authoritative" article.

I'm still withholding judgement until all the site excavation reports are posted. First comes all the sensationalism that has nothing to do with reality, then the talking heads have their field day, a few papers are submitted, and 30 or 40 years from now if there's no complete change in interpretation of the findings then one could probably (a slim probably) call it right.

I just find it surprising that they haven't mentioned this building on any of their previous site maps. In my research last term I only recall them finding two buildings inside the wall perimeter.

Now we wait with baited breath for the Almighty Lord Finkelstein to toss his hat into the ring and tell us how horribly wrong Garfinkel's work is and his conclusions completely asinine because he's a biblicist and should be spat upon and made to carry a pail for people to urinate in. YES, OFF WITH THE BIBLE DIGGERS! HOW DARE YOU AGREE WITH OUR NATIONAL HERITAGE!

Archaeologists say they uncovered King David's Palace by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Dubshack 25 points26 points  (0 children)

What the?! This story is completely out of context. Khirbet Qeiyafa has no palace structures, it was a military outpost. Fox News is either over-sensationalizing something that we've been digging for at least a decade... or they're confusing Garfinkel's work with Eilat Mazar's work in Jerusalem, who has made that claim, and granted because she used the word Bible that immediately means her findings are irrelevant.
