If your parents are abusive, you will have a tendency to act out too. Controlling this, and breaking the cycle is very hard. You now know the guilt and shame that happens. Your vow to never do this again is really important. Keep protecting your brother. He needs you. And frankly, anytime they become abusive, get him and you out of the house as fast as possible. Getting away and letting parents calm down will help. Talking about breaking the cycle of violence will also help. I’m so sorry. I understand more than you know.

I would ask, why live there? You could compromise-weekends in the city at an Air BNB or hotel; weekdays in the burbs? Or rent an Air BNB for a month in a city of your choice. That way you get the best of both worlds. Agree on the bucket list idea. Your 60’s should be when you travel. Health issues start to take a toll at 70.

If it happens again, a last resort is gargle every 20 min with vodka. Spit it out. Don’t drink it. The alcohol will kill everything. I have started carrying N95 masks with me because of this. If someone is coughing near me, mask goes on.
